Default Rockport fishmongers net crab intended for President Bush

ROCKPORT (Dec 31, 2004): A shipping error has given Mainers the opportunity to eat food fit -- if not for a king -- for the president of the United States.

Two cases of frozen Dungeness crabmeat bound for Maryland, and ultimately a gala dinner to be attended by President George W. Bush Sunday night in Washington, D.C., have landed instead at a Rockport fishmonger's store.

Hot Rod Seafood was expecting a shipment of Alaska salmon, but instead is selling its unexpected shipment of 240 pounds of Dungeness crabmeat, which had been destined for President George W. Bush's plate Sunday night.

Hot Rod Seafood on Route 1 in Rockport expected a shipment of Alaska king salmon and instead received 240 pounds of Dungeness crabmeat. A few phone calls later to try and sort things out and Rockport's newest fresh seafood purveyors realized they better change courses and start selling the perishable and delectable meat from the sea while they can.

Hot Rod is calling the crab "G.W." Dungeness crabmeat and selling it for $20 per pound.

Dungeness crabmeat is reputed to be the sweetest of all crabmeat, but is not quite as sweet as Maine lobster. It can only be harvested in the winter on the West Coast, from San Francisco Bay all the way to Alaska. It got its name from the town of Dungeness, Wash., a fishing port near Puget Sound.

Two cases of Dungeness crabmeat were mistakenly delivered to Hot Rod Seafood in Rockport Friday morning. The final destination was to have been the Kennedy Center in the nation's capital for a dinner to be attended by President George W. Bush.

"We learned that the orders got mixed up in Seattle at the airport and the freight stickers for our order of king salmon and their order of Dungeness crabmeat were swapped," said Kym Scott, an owner of Hot Rod Seafood.

Congressional Seafood is a wholesale seafood purveyor in Maryland.

The "their" to which Scott referred was the Kennedy Center, the host of an annual gala on Sunday evening. The gala will be preceded by the honors ceremony Saturday night, when six individuals will be honored for their artistic contributions to the cultural life of America and the world.

President Bush and First Lady Laura Bush are slated to join artists from around the world at the gala performance Sunday night, which concludes with a dinner dance in the grand foyer of the center.

The owners of Hot Rod Seafood may have missed the boat on their order of salmon, and may now be selling the president's crabmeat, but this local family is doing it with their hearts in the right place.

"We're selling it in the store now and all the money will be given to Doctors Without Borders for their tsunami relief fund," said Scott.

If they sell out as hoped, the store's owners anticipate being able to send a check for nearly $4,800.

As of noon Friday, 20 pounds of crabmeat had been sold and word of the presidential catch was spreading fast.

"We told a few friends about it and now people are starting to come in like wildfire," said Sissy Onett, a partner in the business.
