Default Mention in Entertainment Weekly

The July 22/29 double issue of Entertainment Weekly has a Chart Flashback to 1982 and they revisit and regrade the top 10 songs. Here's what they said about #4 Hold Me; "The band had basically imploded like a death star made of infidelity and cocaine at this point, but "Hold Me" is still a yacht-pop dream. Grade A"

The rest of their top 10: Eye of the Tiger A, Rosanna A-, Hurts So Good B, Let It Whip A-, Abracadabra B-, Don't You Want Me A-, Tainted Love A plus, Only The Lonely B plus, and Keep the Fire Burnin' D.

That's a great top 10. They don't make them like that anymore.
I'd put Abracadabra as an A too.

Hold Me is a classic example of late 70s early 80s yacht rock. Definitely a timeless song, it never gets old, even with the repatative chorus.

Hold Me also shows the skill and creativity of the band. It was the most unique single on the charts at that time. Nothing else like it.

That is one thing I really like about a lot of Lindsey and Christine's songs, they're lyrics can be simple and minimalistic, and even very chorus heavy, but they still sound great. Hold Me is a good example of this. You Make Loving Fun, Everywhere, Go Your Own Way, Little Lies, Family Man, Eyes of The World are some other good examples.

Fuzzy, EW gave Abracadabra a B- because "You can't blame Steve (Miller) for maxing out a rhyme scheme, but 'Abra, abracadabra/I wanna reach out and grab ya' sounds like it should be coming from a blacked out van, not your shop teacher's radio."

I' m not familiar with "Let It Whip" by Dazz Band or "Keep the Fire Burnin'" by REO Speedwagon.
