Default Tramp album(s)

Hi everybody,

I think it's interesting for most of you:

A translation of an album review by Wolfgang Giese

TRAMP – Same (1969)

I don’t think there are many visitors here in our forum who own this very rare record. The line-up of TRAMP was:

Jo-Ann Kelly, vocals
Dave Kelly, vocals
Bob Hall, piano
Mick Fleetwood , drums
Bob Brunning, bass
Danny Kirwan, guitar

They recorded an album in many different styles of blues: Barrelhouse, Chicago Blues, elements of folk, jazz, and rock. It was reported, it has been a project of Bob Brunning mainly, who involved two musicians of his old band Fleetwood Mac in it. He tried to present just the special qualities of all the players, who were present in the studio. I think that’s the reason why it became a very interesting part of music. Brunning called it a „meeting of musical ‚tramps’.“

THE TRACK LIST:
OWN UP
SAME OLD THING
WHAT YOU GONNA DO
SOMEBODY WATCHING ME
TOO LATE NOW
BABY WHAT YOU WANT ME TO DO
STREET WALKING BLUES
ON THE SCENE
MONTH OF SUNDAYS
HARD WORK
ANOTHER DAY

The best way to listen to this album for the first time would be to start with:

SAME OLD THING (a relaxed Shuffle, dominated by Bob Hall)
SOMEBODY WATCHING ME (a rocking Boogie including a nice Kirwan solo on guitar)
STREET WALKING BLUES (a wonderful slow blues)
MONTH OF SUNDAYS (has a swinging jazz feeling)
HARD WORK (a great instrumental and Danny Kirwan in best form!)

The record was never listed as a milestone in history of blues, but it is representing the great creativity of the blues scene in England until the end of the 1960s extremely well. And indeed – it’s a hard to find rarity for many years now. You should look for it.

By the way: TRAMP produced a second album called PUT A RECORD ON.

The line-up:
Bob Brunning (Bass)
Mick Fleetwood (Drums)
Danny Kirwan (Guitar)
Dave Brooks (Sax)
Bob Hall (Piano)
Dave Kelly (Vocal On "Too Late For That Now" / "Now I Ain't A Junkie Anymore" / "Like You Used To Do" / "Funky Money" / And "Paternity Orders")
Jo-Ann Kelly (Vocals On "Too Late For That Now" / "What You Gonna Do" / "You've Gotta Move" / "Put A Record On" / "Beggar By Your Side" And "It's Over")
Ian Morton (Percussion).

TRACK LIST:
TOO LATE FOR THAT NOW
NOW I AIN'T A JUNKIE ANYMORE
WHAT YOU GONNA DO
LIKE YOU USED TO DO
YOU'VE GOTTA MOVE
PUT A RECORD ON
FUNKY MONKEY
BEGGAR BY YOUR SIDE
MATERNITY ORDERS (KEEP ON ROLLING IN)
IT'S OVER

Regards and best wishes
Manfred

I think these albums are definitely worth looking out for - I've got 'Put A Record On' and also a few tracks from the first album on a compilation CD. It's all pretty decent stuff. The original LPs are expensive but the Appaloosa label in Italy put them out on CD and they're (usually) reasonably priced on eBay etc. Danny's guitar on the first album is particularly good

I'll have to dig these out and play them again...I haven't listened to them in YEARS (closer to "decades"). Since I rarely play LPs anymore, a lot of music I used to listen to quite a bit goes unlistened to now.
