I never thought it was that bad, I always would get two fifths at a time...down 'em, then go back in for more. Good thing I had a full beard at the age of 14!!! The old guy behind the counter (he HAD to have been AT LEAST 80) had glasses thicker than Coke bottles and never did an ID check. Helped that I was also 5'10" tall at 14, as well.

Oh, yeah, also used to down Gallo Spanada and Gallo Sangria, too. Yummy! No wonder I have health problems these days!

Eventually eased into "grown-up" wines, like Inglenook Mountain Rose' & Mateus Red...then evolved into a wine snob.

Now: Behringer White Zinfandel or Morningstar Merlot.

I did the same - I also LOVED Boone's Farm's "Tickle Pink!"

Remember "AKADAMA Plum wine"? It was on par with Boone's Farm.

C.K. Mondavi cabernet is cheap and tastes pretty good. Torres Sangre de Toro also is very good and usually under 10 bucks, but unfortunately I can't find it anywhere in my neck of the woods anymore.

I work at an Italian restaurant and have become a lot more well versed in wine since doing so... some of my faves...

Whites:

Riesling (sweet white wine)
Cakebread Cellers Chardonnay
Estancia Chardonnay
Sonoma Cutrer Chardonnay
Danzante Pinot Grigio

Reds:

Blackstone Merlot
Beringer Pinot Noir
Banfi Centine Sangiovese

I like some Shiraz too. We don't have a pure Shiraz at my work but we do sell Penfolds Shiraz, which is a blend of several red wines.

I am cheap and poor so I get Ecco Domani Merlot or Kendall Jackson Chardonnay.

When I' really looking for something sweet, Riuniti Lambrusco is good too.

But, I still think there's nothing better than Chianti with a big plate of spaghetti & a tomato based sauce.
Hmmm, and I always thought Chianti went best with human liver and some fava beans (pfft, pfft, pfft, pfft, pfft).

I enjoy Merlots and Pinot Noirs - I like Coppola, and that Australian one I can't think of right now....

But when it comes to serious drinkin', I love Absolut Mandarin and cranberry.

You'd be jealous of me, Strand - last night I went through this bag of goodies that I got for xmas last and inside was a carton of Lindemann's Chardonnay. I don't know one from the other so I'm glad to hear your recommendation! I'll have one (or two) for you when it gets drunk eventually!

There is also a fabulous, dry, oak-y chardonnay that I used to drink, however I can't remember the name of it. Dom is overrated, IMO. I did like Cristal but not for the price.

I think it's called Freemark Abbey. It's made by monks.
