That's really sad. What a shock. I have a couple of mid-1980s Zevon albums in addition to his 1976 album. I've always liked his subversive, corruscating wit & his solid pop sense.
The one time I saw Zevon perform live was at the Tough On Toxics benefit in Los Angeles in 1986. The show was a huge confabulation of A-ticket talent: Joni Mitchell (who sang "Cool Water"), J.D. Souther, Neil Young, Jimmy Buffet, Rita Coolidge, Stevie Nicks, Cheech Marin, Lindsey Buckingham, Don Henley & most of the other Eagles. Zevon played first, opening with "Lawyers, Guns & Money," which is probably one of the funnier pop songs ever written, & "Werewolves of London." He performed his short set with such conviction & energy that the Los Angeles Times reviewer, Robert Hilburn, wrote that Zevon & Buckingham (who performed two songs on his own) should have dumped the rest of the Big Stars & just done the entire show by themselves. |

Despite the typically Zevonian response, it's hard to crack a smile. A great shame.

I heard this on the radio yesterday...I had no idea how serious it was though. Well, God's speed to him.
You know, I actually have his version of Reconsider Me as a 45. the picture sleeve is beautiful, has red roses on it. |
