The best song on Tusk is Tusk. It is a true original.

Glad to see this thread, originated in 2006, is still circulating! I read through it, saw that I had said TUSK is the best song on Tusk. I still feel the same way 7 years later. Gosh, I've been commenting in this forum that long?

It would be funny if you said something completely different and wacky in 2006 and then you'd be reading through and see your name and go "Wha..."

And entirely possible. I'm actually surprised by my consistency in this instance.

All of Lindsey's vocal manipulations and harmonizing with himself are also fantastic here.; that's really my favorite aspect of his music from this period.

Close seconds: Actually, if I start listing any, I'll end up listing 3/4 of the album.

I think one of the great accomplishments of the Tusk album is its deliberately disjointed nature. If the production of Rumours was all about taking the works of three decidedly different songwriters and giving them a single, unifying "edgy California pop" aesthetic, then it seems as though on Tusk, Richard/Ken/Lindsey set about purposefully fashioning three very different and distinct aesthetics for each of the three songwriters, and then mashing them all together. So you get "Over And Over" segueing into "The Ledge," "What Makes You Think You're The One" into "Storms," "Honey Hi" into "Beautiful Child," and on and on. You could separate the album into three EPs - one each for Lindsey, Stevie and Christine - that all sound like unified wholes, but it's the jagged contrasts of throwing all those songs and voices up against each other that makes Tusk such a masterpiece.
Tusk does not get the credit it deserves, but I'd have to say that right now is Save Me A Place. The live version is perfect. Ask me again tomorrow, & you will probably get a different response. Yesterday it was Sisters Of the Moon. Hahah.

Sisters of the Moon - just look at the Mirage DVD performance.

Sara, Angel, and Never Forget are also amazing.
And Tusk, Storms, Think About Me are also up there.

Oh, it could change on any day of the week, but most days, it would probably be "Sara" or "What Makes You Think You're the One."

"Sara," to me, is one of the best examples of the FM groove. They play so well together on that song, and it just feels right. I love the double-tracked piano, each one panned to opposite sides of the stereo spectrum. If I'm not mistaken, there's not a single cymbal crash on that song, which is very unusual for a hit pop/rock song. The layered vocals, guitars, and keyboards are lovely.

Back in the early days of MTV, they used to play the live version of "Sara." I have to admit, I wasn't much of an FM fan back then [I got better!], but I always liked "Sara."

"What Makes You Think You're the One," on the other hand, is wonderfully random. It almost feels more like a jam or rehearsal than a final take. I smile every time I hear Lindsey sing, "And it won't last forever...!" The way he twists the pitch upward as he sings "won't" is hilarious...like someone stepped on his foot or hit him with a jolt of electricity...! It's just a fun, exuberant song.

It really is difficult to pick just one.

This old thread is a testament to Tusk *not* being too long. Almost every song on it was somebody's pick for personal favorite.
