Video of Ono’s exhibition remains hidden in vintage, battered black case

Trapped inside a haggard and taped-up videotape case is an account unseen from Yoko Ono's 1971 exhibition. It is art unseen. Only the words scrawled on a piece of tape hint at what lies inside: Videofreex, Yoko, B/W 1/2, 30 MINS. Videofreex, a group of nine ragtag artists in their 20s, exemplified the video art former Everson Director Jim Harithas introduced to the Everson during the 1970s. While living at a 60-acre farm in Lanesville, N.Y., the group traveled up and down the New York State Thruway practicing and teaching video art. During the time period, the group documented many exhibitions at the Everson, including the Ono exhibition.

Beatles invasion coming to Cobb

Steve Landes is living out his dream portraying John Lennon as part of “RAIN — A Tribute to the Beatles,” which is making its way to the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre tonight, Saturday and Sunday. Part of the Gas South Broadway Series, RAIN will perform popular songs from the legendary band, as well as tunes never played for an audience. RAIN, which is also the name of a Beatles song, was formed in 1975. Although they started out writing their own music, they began performing Beatles songs and became its first tribute band. Landes, who joined the band in 1998, said being a member takes on a legendary perspective.

Steve Jobs bio confirms dispute with EMI held up Beatles debut on iTunes

The Beatles weren't able to make their long-awaited debut on iTunes until things were worked out with EMI, according to the new Walter Isaacson Steve Jobs biography. "The band was the last major holdout, primarily because it had not resolved with EMI music, which owned most of the songs, how to handle digital rights," Isaacson writes.*In May, 2010 in an interview with the BBC, Paul McCartney also pointed the finger at EMI. "It's been business hassles. Not with us, or iTunes. It's the people in the middle, the record label. There have been all sorts of reasons why they don't want to do it," McCartney was quoted as saying.

Sign from 1969 'Bed-In' could fetch big bucks

Money was a prime villain — along with war, bigotry and some of the other ills of modern society — when Beatles mega-star John Lennon and his newlywed wife Yoko Ono spent a famous week in bed at a Montreal hotel in 1969 to promote peace, love and pyjama power. But various artifacts created during Lennon and Ono's historic stay in Canada continue to fetch stunning prices at auctions around the world, and the latest relic from the couple's Montreal "Bed-In For Peace" — a simple placard with the words "BED" and "PEACE" scribbled by Lennon in black marker — is expected to fetch up to $160,000 at a Christie's sale of pop culture memorabilia next month in Britain.

Yoko Ono’s “Uncursed” Opens in New York

She was “the world’s most famous unknown artist,” according to John Lennon, whose 1969 marriage to Yoko Ono both granted her instant celebrity and nearly eclipsed a serious art career that Ono had nurtured in avant-garde circles for more than a decade. Today, after major art-world recognition—including the Golden Lion Award for Lifetime Achievement at the 2009 Venice Biennale—Ono’s uniquely poetic and sly artistic practice, with its roots in Fluxus and haiku, and its heady melding of art, activism, and celebrity, is poised to take over where the rock legend ends. In July, Ono returned to her native Japan, which was still laboring under the effects of the massive earthquake in March, to accept the Hiroshima Art Prize for her peace activism, and to install an exhibition of her work at the Hiroshima City Art Museum of Contemporary Art. This week, in the midst of setting up for her second show at New York’s Galerie Lelong, which opens today, Ono, elegant and almost elfin in a jaunty straw boater, dark sunglasses, and narrow-hipped black pants, paused to speak with me about her return to Japan and the seeds of her new exhibition. Her New York show, which includes elements of the work created for the Hiroshima exhibition, began with a childhood memory:

John Lennon helped Paul McCartney with songs from the afterlife

When John Lennon was killed on December 8, 1980 outside his home in New York at the Dakota Apartments, the world grieved for his loss. But many people, including those close to him during his life, still feel his presence. It seems he hasn’t really left us. (Read about the many books that have been written on John’s afterlife) Paul McCartney has shared several stories of Lennon spiritually intervening in his life. John’s otherworldy efforts have helped Paul heal from his grief over his death and later helped him get a message to the world through music. He even apparently helped the Beatles put the Beatles Anthology together.

Yoko Ono to Introduce Steve Jobs Tribute at MTV's O Music Awards

TV is upping the Apple factor at its O Music Awards with a plan to have Yoko Ono introduce the Flaming Lips' musical tribute to Apple Computer co-founder Steve Jobs.Ono, the window of Beatle John Lennon, will speak about her late husband and Jobs before the Lips perform "Revolution," a Lennon-McCartney composition from the Beatles 'White Album. 'The performance was completely shot on iPads.

"Like John Lennon, the man I love deeply, Steve Jobs was a dreamer who changed the world," Ono is expected to say during the online awards ceremony that begins Oct. 31 at 8:30 p.m. PT at www.omusicawards.com. "But of course when we lose a genius of that caliber, they are never really gone. They live on all around us, through our memories, their words, and their work. Their spirit grows in us forever to the end of the days." The Beatles' company and label is also named Apple and the two sides were involved in numerous lawsuits over rights and images that needed to be resolved before the Beatles catalog was made available on iTunes.

EXCLUSIVE: Two who knew ex-Beatle Stu Sutcliffe weigh in on song controversy

Is it one-time Beatle Stu Sutcliffe or not singing on the recently unearthed version of "Love Me Tender" ? The statement from Sutcliffe's sister Pauline about why they believe it's him hasn't ended the debate. Actually, it's only intensified it. Several have pointed to the similarity the song has with the version in the movie "Birth of the Beatles," leading some to wonder if the new version was an outtake from the movie. We contacted two people who personally knew Sutcliffe for their opinions about the song. First, we asked Bill Harry, founder and editor of Mersey Beat. Here are his thoughts:

John Lennon Inspired Steve Jobs to Strive for Perfection

John Lennon‘s creativity and work ethic didn’t just help ensure the Beatles‘ music was legendary, it also inspired Apple’s recently deceased co-founder Steve Jobs to strive for perfection within his company, according to an authorized biography of the visionary by Walter Isaacson.
A bootleg of the classic Beatles’ song ‘Strawberry Fields Forever,’ especially one part where Lennon stops the band from playing and makes them return to the beginning to revise a chord, fascinated Jobs, according to the biography, as reported by Showbiz 411.

John Lennon’s spirit sends profound message to former lover May Pang

May Pang still hears from her former lover, John Lennon*occasionally – his spirit that is. After the 2008 publication of her book, Instamatic Karma, she told me an interesting story. She was driving some friends over the Hudson Bridge coming into New York, and she was describing to them how she sometimes feels his presence, especially while working on her book about her time with Lennon. The friend, whom May described as skeptical of spirit communications, said, “OK, but how do you know when John is around ? ”

Beatles urban myth about hidden Liverpool mural shattered

A MUSICAL urban myth passed down over the decades in Liverpool can finally be shattered today.A rumour has persisted for 40 years that a mural hidden in a city nightclub was part of Beatles history. Well-established Gossip suggested the vibrant wall art was created by fifth-Beatle Stuart Sutcliffe and lay safely concealed. And during a recent major facelift of nightspot Magnet, designers found the artwork seemingly created by the Fab Four’s original bassist. The mural emerged in all its glory after a wall was knocked down in the basement of the Hardman Street venue.

Behind the music of a Beatle

LOS ANGELES - Remember George Harrison's unforgettable opening line in the Beatles' 1969 hit "Something"? "Something in the way she moves / attracts me like no other woman."Of course not, because he sings "lover," not "woman." But "woman" is what Harrison wrote before changing one word that could have spelled the difference between a hit and a miss, an edit that's on display at the Grammy Museum in "George Harrison: Living in the Material World," a show focusing on the man pigeonholed early as "the quiet Beatle."

What Stuart Sutcliffe fan hasn’t wished to learn as much as possible about the fascinating young artist and Beatle?* His time with us was short yet incredibly creative; every surfacing artwork, picture, letter or anecdote is pored over with relish by admirers. But some things Sutcliffe-lovers were sadly certain they would never get to know: for instance—his voice. That’s why the digital release of “Love Me Tender“, sung by Stuart himself, is an astonishing event generating stunned excitement and questions about the song’s origin and authenticity

John Lennon’s 1971 ‘Imagine’ Completion Party Remembered

John Lennon may have been the host with the most if this raw video footage tells the tale correctly. After wrapping up sessions for his seminal ‘Imagine’ album in July of 1971, the newly ex-Beatle and his girl (that’s Yoko to you!) threw a mega party to celebrate. As the Gothamist points out, the party was held at the home of the notorious Alan Klein and with a stellar list of guests, the shindig was caught on film by Jonas Mekas, a friend of John and Yoko’s. Rubbing elbows, and possibly more, were the likes of Miles Davis, Phil Spector, Allen Ginsberg, Andy Warhol, and Ringo among many others.

Book Review: If You Like The Beatles by Bruce Pollock

If You Like The Beatles is part of a new book series from the Hal Leonard publishing group. The If You Like... books take off from that simple phrase, and explore the influences and impacts of the subject at hand. Appropriately enough, The Beatles were chosen to inaugurate the series. The decision to use the Fab Four makes sense for a number of reasons. As the preeminent Baby Boomer band, The Beatles still exert a massive impact on the culture, over fifty years after they initially got together.

Unfinished Lennon song recovered by Spanish Beatles tribute band
November 2, 2011

The Spanish Beatles tribute band, aptly named Los Escarabajos (Spanish word for "beetles") has recorded "Now And Then", an unfinished John Lennon song from 1979 that Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr tried in vain to complete in 1996 for the third volume of the Anthology project.Los Escarabajos released a version of this original in 2001 for their CD Lennonphile (The Album That John Could Never Record), but the current rendition captures the concept of the singles included in Anthology by the remaining Beatles, "Free As A Bird" and "Real Love".The 2011 remake of "Now And Then" is presented with an animated work by Alvaro Ortega, reputable Spanish visual artist, who shows his own colourful style reminding us of the ever classic Yellow Submarine and the recent The Beatles: Rock Band.

On the last World Animation Day, 28th of October, the song and video were published on YouTube, marking the 15th anniversary of The Beatles' Anthology 3 and the 10th anniversary of Los Escarabajos' Lennonphile. In 2010, Los Escarabajos were given honorary degrees by the University of Seville for their work, having performed live the entire Beatles discography over the course of the Spanish group's 18-year history. The band was a headlining act at the International Beatle Week in Liverpool between 2003 and 2010.

Imagine! Bermuda Lennon Tribute CD’s Coming

Bermuda famously inspired John Lennon’s last songs. And now Bermudian artists will have the opportunity to return the compliment with a new tribute CD of the former Beatle’s material. The CD — being produced by Ride the Wave*charitable group — is to be released in conjunction with the unveiling of a memorial to the singer/songwriter/peace activist at the Masterworks Museum of Bermuda Art in the Botanical Gardens next summer.Mr. Lennon spent several weeks in Bermuda in 1980 after sailing here from the US, saying the island allowed him to reconnect with his creative muse after a five-year spell of writer’s block [he is pictured here with son Sean while visiting the island].

In Big Time Movie, currently in production in Vancouver, Kendall (Kendall Schmidt), James (James Maslow), Carlos (Carlos Pena Jr.) and Logan (Logan Henderson) head to London for their first big world tour but instead get mixed up in a mission to save the world. With their bags switched at the airport, they inadvertently gain possession of a fearsome device that, in the wrong hands, could destroy the world. Set to premiere in 2012, Big Time Movie is executive produced by show creator Scott Fellows.

Yoko Ono 2012 exhibition announced

In Summer 2012 the Serpentine Gallery will present a major exhibition of the work of celebrated artist Yoko Ono for the London 2012 Festival, which will include SMILE, a large-scale participatory project. The Serpentine’s timely exhibition will reflect upon the enormous impact that Yoko Ono has made on contemporary art, exploring her influential role in art, music, film and performance. Her first exhibition in a London public institution for more than a decade, Ono will present new and existing works, some of which have rarely been shown in the UK. These will include installations, films and performances, as well as architectural alterations to the galleries.

As a part of her exhibition, Ono will present SMILE, a large-scale project which will be exhibited at the Serpentine Gallery and online for the London 2012 Festival. Conceived as a way of connecting people across the world, the project invites people to upload and send an image of their smiles, to create a global anthology of portraits.

Ono envisions that ‘all of the smiles... that are collected will be kept by the Serpentine Gallery as a record for the planet Earth. When people take part in the SMILE, they will receive their own smile to take home.’

Yoko Ono at the Serpentine Gallery will be part of the London 2012 Festival, a spectacular 12-week UK-wide celebration featuring world leading artists from Midsummer’s Day on 21 June to the final day of the Paralympic Games on 9 September 2012.
