Didn't realize Bob Welsh was this good!
Hey all - I was just doing some exploring and came across this song by
Bob Welsh - It's called "Nightwatch" from the album "Penguins" - 1973 from Reprise. As McVie would say - - - JEEEEE-sus! "Go on, you know you're only one Set me free You take me up and turn around But let me in Take this shadow from my eyes And tell me everything Take the desert from my soul And lift me up from down below Let me take some pride in your creation Cause I have lived alone in castles that were lonely And I have cursed the dawn and wondered why I do Well I have wondered why I live Now I know you must forgive Let me stand inside your magic shadow The night is coming faster And you're feeling all unchained In the north there is a jungle Where rockets are aflame And I hope that in the desert There are ships and there is noise And above the greatest city There will shine a magic shadow And a voice It's taking long but I'm getting strong as I grow old Please believe me let the magic reach me and I will unfold I'll step aboard with you onday And see my dust just melt away And then I'll step inside your magic shadow dreamers..." |

And yes, "Nightwatch" is a very nice song on an unfortunately mediocre album. |

Oh, and the song title is two words..."Night Watch". AND, let's not forget, that the lead guitar on the fade out (just like on "Brown Eyes") is one Peter Alan Greenbaum. The album, once my least favorite, has grown in stature over the years. The only song, NOW, that I would dump is their horrendous cover of "Roadrunner".

I've always had soft spot for Penguin because it was the first FM album I ever bought. Night Watch is I think one of the best on the album. I would ditch Road Runner as well.
I remember seeing them play at the Manchester, Free Trade Hall in May 1973 and one of the few songs I can remember them playing was Night Watch. Happy days! Gail |

"Penguin" has a few gems, and a few stinkers. I can't imagine my Fleetwood Mac collection without such songs as "Remember Me," "Dissatisfied," "Revelation," "Did You Ever Love Me," and "Night Watch." The other four, not so much. It was a very casual album. They didn't seem too focused on what they were doing. But, in an artistic sense, the band was in the middle of shifting from the "Bare Trees" sound to the "Mystery To Me" sound. There are songs on "Penguin" that could have gone on the earlier albums, and others that could have gone on later albums.
I think it's safe to say that this album was very important for Christine as a pop songwriter. She had crafted a great pop tune with "Spare Me A Little" on the last album. "Penguin" showed that it wasn't a one-time deal. Her "Penguin" songs could have easily gone on later albums. (In fact, I've said that if you mix her "Penguin" songs in with the "Buckingham Nicks" album, it would have had that Big Mac sound.)

I really like Penguin. It was the first pre-bn Fleetwood Mac album I purchased.
I was so intrigued by the cover..because I really like penguins. I actually like the entire album, though at the end there's one or two songs that I don't like. I love "Im a roadrunner" - it's so cool. Christine had 3 amazing songs! Doesn't it seem like a really short album? Same with "Future Games"... I feel like "Bare Trees" and "Mystery to me" and "Heroes..." are much longer albums. I love the fact that they are.

Didn't Bob Welsh write a song about a Welch witch?
