All things considered, Stevie's fanbase is probably the most critical overall.
But that doesn't fit into the stereotype that folks like to perpetuate.

The reason Stevie is so much more popular than the other two is this:

1. She was considered a sex symbol. (this has nothing to do with music)
2. People (mostly women) but some men...related to her witchy, hippie Janis Joplin like stage presence. (she was excellent at entertaining the crowds). They ate her up, dressed like her, talked like her, danced liked her, started clubs etc etc

Combine these two elements and you have superstardom.

Now having said that, I think she has written some really good music. Is she the greatest of all time? Hell no.. but either is Christine or LB... And quite honestly, I never thought Bob Dylan was all that fantastic either. He wrote some phenominal songs and some really horrible songs. (funny both Stevie and Bob have irritating voices later on in their careers)

It's all pretty subjective...

Now if you want to talk about the best composers, let's go with Jeff Buckley or someone that does more than I V IV. otherwise it's all just radio hits to me.

I think there's also a good contingent of her fanbase (like me and David, for two) who aren't fans of her because we think she's a great songwriter (in any traditional sense, anyway).

It's an interesting dichotomy. Many Stevie fans are at once intensely critical of the songs of hers that they don't like (I don't think you could have a "bizarro survivor" on any of the other forums) but also intensely defensive of the ones they do, and intensely defensive of her personally.

I don't think you'll find any Dylan fans who would claim that the man hasn't written some fantastically awful songs. So it goes when you've been writing and recording for over forty years. But there's simply very little that's better than Dylan at his peak(s), and he's released more of those phenomenal songs than most people could if they had two lifetimes to try.

I agree. Dylan in his prime back in the 1960's was the best songwriter ever, by far. If you listen to his albums during those years, there are so many classics & no bad songs at all, in my opinion. He's the only singer I enjoy listening to whose voice I can't stand. Lennon & McCartney are still my favorite songwriters & Christine is my favorite songwriter in Fleetwood Mac, by far.

By the way, this has turned into a most bizarre thread. And, to think it started with Brandon asking about In The Meantime album sales.

By the same token, some of those who attack her do so on a personal basis and many of them do so on purpose and just to get a rise out of people. Then, when someone notes that, they are called a mindless faithful, etc.

Odd that people get so worked up about it when it's so obviously George.
