12:13 Sun King
By Matt Blick
Sun King is a lame parody of Fleetwood Mac's snoozefest Albatross. In Feb '69 Peter Green's lazy instrumental was topping the UK charts. 5 months later the Beatles were ripping it off in order to produce this sloppy soporific song that ...

GEORGE 1987: "At the time, 'Albatross' was out, with all the reverb on guitar. So we said, 'Let's be Fleetwood Mac doing Albatross, just to get going.' It never really sounded like Fleetwood Mac... but that was the point of origin."

In 1980 Lennon said the song was "garbage". In 2011 I agree with him. We have the Albatross section in E major, followed by a ‘chorus’ in C major. The chorus section is OK, but Lennon could write tunes like that in his sleep. The third section, is a recap of the Albatross section topped off with a monotonal vocal (in 3 or 4 part harmony) singing gibberish - a combination of Spanish, Italian, Portuguese and ‘Scouse’.

How big was Fleetwood Mac's Rumours, really? After topping the year-end chart for 1977, it did well enough to rank #9 for 1978. In Rumours, Hotel California by the Eagles, and the debut album by Boston, 1977's top three rank among the most significant albums of all time.

Here's Fleetwood Mac winning their Album of the Year Grammy for Rumours at the 1978 show, presented by Crosby Stills and Nash.

I think it's from Mobile 1980. I'm not too sure, but that definitely rings a bell;

Here's the full song if that helps at all: http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?2se29491siw1tvl

Egg Babies plan first all-covers show since July
The cover band Egg Babies has scheduled its first show since July for later this month.

They will perform along the Bellevederes, the local soul band, at the Ottobar January 29.

The band Meetwood Flack, which includes members of both Egg Babies and the Bellevederes, will also perform a series of covers of Crosby, Nash and Stills songs.
Nah, just kidding. They'll be doing Fleetwood Mac covers, hopefully, along with a couple of Steve Nicks imitations.
The members of the cover band don't perform regularly; they just get together every few months for a show.
Their last show was in July, when they got Wye Oak's Jenn Wasner to sing lead.
Why Fleetwood Mac? Band member Michael Ward says it always gets a big reaction.
"Those songs are timeless and people of all ages still enjoy them," he said. The show will consist of an encore of the last show, but will include one new interpretation.

Come see the witchy magic at 9 p.m., January 29. Tickets, at $10, will be sold at missiontix.com soon.

It only takes one listen of “Landslide” when you’re just a pup bouncing on your daddy’s knee, and you’re forever after a loving lackey to anything and everything that flows out of the God-given larynx of Stevie Nix. Apparently, I’m not the only one still listening to Fleetwood Mac some twenty years after said childhood epiphany. Recently trolling Pitchfork interviews for life advice from relevant indie musicians, I happened upon a Q and A with Cut Copy‘s founder Dan Whitford. Asked what artists may have influenced the sound of their forthcoming record Zonoscope, Whitford replied “I was obsessed with Fleetwood Mac’s Tusk while working on this record.”

This shouldn’t come as a surprise to long time followers of Cut Copy, as Whitford and his eventual band-mates routinely mixed Fleetwood Mac songs into some of their earliest released sets, a feat that immediately endeared the group to my ears. An example of this is provided below in the track labeled “Funk.” For some super-spooky funk, Ray Park Jr. style, fast-forward to minute 8:30, and for a mix of Fleetwood Mac’s “Never Forget” (off Tusk) skip to minute 29:40.

But as Whitford surely won’t deny, Fleetwood Mac continue to show up in their sound, and in much less obvious form than a direct sampling. The bass line of the band’s recently released single “Take Me Over” bares a strong resemblance to the low-frequency bounce of Fleetwood Mac’s “Everywhere” off their album Tango In The Night. Cut Copy’s single also displays an obvious affinity for another famous down-under dance-pop hit: Men At Work’s “We Come From A Land Down Under.” Give a listen to all these great tracks below, and see what kind of recognizable similarities spark in your creative lobe.

Default Whoever wrote this had to be stoned

Fleetwood Mac went off the low finish on “Tusk,” spending a cold million in their query to follow up “Rumors” with something similarly sensational. Lindsay Buckingham pushed the organisation for a reply to the punk stone transformation that he found concurrently captivating and terrifying. Punk featured big, blunt, misrepresented guitar, and Buckingham, for all his strengths, didn’t fool around that way. He did, however, have a large brief intent at his disposal: his drummer. Why not crush Mick Fleetwood’s flog and snare, and float them up in the blend to the indicate of express sonic absurdity? Why not expand that examination over two discs? Oh, and how about adding the USC marching rope whilst we’re at it? We’re the greatest organisation in the world; we’ll do what you want.

Hated on for its audacity at the time of its release, “Tusk” is right away established as a coked-out L.A. masterpiece. The organisation was, famously, fractured in to 5 pointy pieces at the time of its recording, but either they did it on mental recall or real residual affection, they sounded superb together even as they were essay about forthcoming apart. Stevie Nicks spends many of “Tusk” removed inside a velvet-walled cell; on her standout cut, the six-and-a-half notation “Sara,” she tries to figure out a way to pardon a buddy who tricked her, and ends up drowned by her own passions. Superficially, “Sisters of the Moon” is the arrange of poem that got Nicks indicted of witchcraft, but really, it’s only the deplore of the a lady who has turn unrecognizable to herself.

This eight-minute delivery of “Sisters of the Moon” was shot during the “Mirage” debate in ’82, but it’s dipsomaniac with the suggestion of “Tusk” — right down to Nicks’ overly suspicious isolation, Christine McVie’s heedful detachment, Buckingham’s self-absorption, and the glowering, darkly charismatic participation of Mick Fleetwood hovering over the proceedings. (Early spill that this is not your median unison clip: Fleetwood starts the strain by sanctimonious to execute hara-kiri with his drumsticks.) That Stevie Nicks is a great thespian is frequency a revelation, but her opening here has the retaining high quality of a short time of clearness in the center of a drug binge. If she awhile to feverishness up, by the time she hits the six-minute mark, she’s roaring, flailing around, perplexing to make a connection with the brothers and sisters in her band, anticipating someone will lift her out of her enchantment. They do not wish to listen to the accusations; they do not even wish to watch their buddy as she comes apart. They keep their heads down and their hands on their instruments, carrying out what they do best.

Default Lettuce entertain you

Let us entertain you in 2011
By Richard Gomez/Commentary Santa Ynez Valley News | Posted: Thursday, January 6, 2011 12:00 am

Ever since we featured the legendary rockers Fleetwood Mac in our Samala Showroom at the Chumash Casino Resort during our hotel grand opening back in 2004, we have had the honor of bringing our guests the best entertainment available in the region.

In fact, we have come a long way since the early days of our gaming operation when we used to hold concerts in a makeshift area of the Sprung structure. Although our concerts were good — we still laughed ourselves silly with the comedian performances and tapped our toes to the great musical performances of our featured artists — we’ve stepped it up quite a bit.

I’ll never forget sitting in the audience that night in 2004 in awe as I watched the members of Fleetwood Mac step onto our stage to perform. It was a proud and electric moment for all of us — and also a good learning experience on fine tuning the technical aspects of creating a showroom that was both comfortable for guests and acoustically perfect for performers. Today our showroom boasts state-of-the-art technology that allows the artists to deliver their very best to our guests.

In 2010, more than 60,000 people visited the Samala Showroom to see performances ranging from R&B greats like the O’Jays and Gladys Knight to rockers Billy Idol and Sheryl Crow. Country western fans were also satisfied with performances from a long roster of country greats including Merle Haggard and the Judds.

Grand Junction, Colorado

It had to have been the best pre-punk, pre-big hair 1970s concert in Saunders Field House at Mesa State Junior College. Not remembered by its tales of technical challenges or outrageous behavior on the part of anyone, but remembered by the fact it was exceptional and one of the first stops by an iconic band during their heyday. Geez, I'm sounding like Rock.

“I was working at The Timbers Restaurant in November of 1975. I got the night off to go see Fleetwood Mac at the college. It was one of their first stops on their first tour and man was I surprised when a couple of girls got on stage, Christine McVie and Stevie Nicks.” remembers Ralph “Dinosaur” Donnen, past Mesa College class president.

Mike Radosevich was the Station Manager at KMSA at the time. “It was an incredible show. Everything was perfect and just the opposite of the Jerry Jeff Walker concert. Nobody knew the Fleetwood Mac album was going to do as well as it did. It was one of their first gigs with Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks.”

Doug “Candy Man” Simons tells me: “I remember it was a great concert. I loved it when Mick Fleetwood came out to the front of the stage with the drum under his arm that he could change the tension by squeezing his arm. Mick walked back and forth across the stage making goofy faces and playing drums solos. It was really great.” Doug was a Mesa State student at the time and active in the music department. “I played guitar, drums and whatever I could get my hands on at the time. I was even doing a little theater.”

The band flew out of Walker Field that next morning. My sister, Becky, was seeing her husband off that same morning. Christie and Stevie were wearing Boy Scout shirts and my sister, being in tune with vintage fashion trends, approached the girls and remarked on their outfits. She ended up having breakfast with them. She still can't find their autograph but thinks she knows where to look.

A few years later, Jerry Jeff Walker would come to the Field House for his first Grand Junction performance. Mike Radosevich was there for that one, too.

“Jerry Jeff was there twice. The first time was probably the most memorable. The production was just horrible. They were late opening the doors and the line of people went all the way to 12th Street, four deep. They finally let everyone in with the concert starting 2 1/2 hours late. They were supposed to start at 8 and it started at 10:30. It was the closest thing to a riot I'd ever seen, everyone getting restless and whiskey bottles bouncing off the walls. The sound system was really bad with all the white noise, they didn't have it under control at all. The SBA (Student Body Association) had hired the cheapest company they could get. I think they were out of Boulder. Jerry Jeff Walker was in his dressing room waiting to go on and by the time he finally did, he was toast and so were two-thirds of the audience. I had to leave and go to work. When Jerry Jeff came back a few years later, I worked at the Sentinel and interviewed him. He didn't remember a thing about it. He was feeling no pain.”

Debbie Manown Massey still holds some dear memories, like waiting and waiting and drinking and drinking and then some chick threw up on her. She can almost remember the girl's name.

I was there for the Fleetwood Mac concert but I don't think I was there for Jerry Jeff Walker. I met him years later after he'd cleaned up his act.

A whole new era of concert promotion was to follow at Mesa. I have to write about something else next column but look forward to me and my sources to jog your memory again.

Write or call me at Priscilla.mangnall@gmail.com or 260-5226.

Excerpt from article on Michael Chugg in the New Zealand Herald, January 8, 2010 by Graham Reid

http://www.nzherald.co.nz/music/news...ectid=10698429

Concert promoter Michael Chugg - the man behind forthcoming shows by Santana and the Doobie Brothers, plus the Laneway and Grassroots festivals among others - tells good stories. By the dozen.

It's the 1977 Fleetwood Mac tour and he's sitting alone at a medieval banquet table backstage, which is covered in whole cooked pigs, sides of beef, lamb, chickens and turkeys ... The band - nine months after the release of their 40 million-selling album Rumours - are on stage with cocaine in beer bottle caps laid out in neat rows on a card table.

"Yeah, the excess of the excess period," laughs the man who indulged along with everyone.

"An amazing tour. The night they played [in Auckland] we had the biggest cream pie and water fight I've ever been involved in."

that is the best summation of the SOTM performance i've ever read! love how the writer describes Chris n Lindsey minding their instruments, seemingly in fear of Stevie's cathartic performance.

Yes, I like the line about not wanting to hear her accusations, as if there's an implication in her words and a consciousness of guilt on their part.
