Ugh... and just when I'd scrubbed what Mackenzie Phillips said about her relationship with her Father outta my mind!

Absolutely not, before i knew what the song was about, it was my father and I's song. We'd sing it in the car together - brings me to tears!

I've always thought this, too. It clearly sounds like an apologetic song to me... like Christine has messed up with a lover. What could she have ever done to apologize to Mick Fleetwood for? She was undoubtedly his most reliable rock within the band. She provided the radio hits. She was the glue the kept the band together. There's more to the back story of Oh Daddy than we know.

I agree, but it's so pretty it's hard not to!

See, I think the above is BS. It was NEVER mentioned(afaik) that this song was about Mick, until YEARS AND YEARS later, when MICK came up with this so called "truth". I call BS on Mick!

You surely not the only one. I'm a huge Mamas & Papas fan. I've been able to reconcile Mackenzie's revelations. For me it's all about music and not about screwed up relationships.

I think the title suits the overall feeling of the song,
I mean if you think it about as that Chrisitine is a little girl, but Mick is some guiding giant - who want's the best for his maclings

I have a demo (I think) of this song. I got it from someone here on The Ledge. Anyway, it is my favorite version of the song. It's different than the actual studio version because the harmonies are so much more prominent. I wish I could remember more info.....I'll try to find it!
****I looked it up, and the "CD" is labeled "Staying True", anyway, this is the best version of the song I've heard!!****[/B][/B] Last edited by gypsy4life; 04-16-2010 at 12:12 AM.. |

"Oh Daddy"! "Don't Stop"! "You Make Loving Fun"!

Actually, the term "Daddy" was often used by women in the 60's and 70's to refer to their partners. I think it was more along the lines of how they say a man always marries his mother, in other words, he looks for the traits of his mother in the women he's later attracted to. So I guess it would work for women who had been "Daddy's little girl" to grow up and look for the attributes of her father in the men they would be with.
In the gay scene there are often couples in which a younger guy dates an older guy and calls him "Daddy", not in an incestuous way but just in the way that the older man is a father figure to him. Speaking of Christine's use of the word Daddy, she also uses it in Honey Hi where she sings "Daddy, all I'm trying to tell you". |
