Default Anyone going to the Orlando show?

I am driving over from Tampa for it tomorrow. I am always afraid of missing an opportunity to see Stevie when she is close as one of these times it may just be the last time. I am in section 105...decent but not great seats. I did see the Tampa show also. Very much looking forward to it!!

Stevie Nicks casts her spell over the Amway Center this week

Does she have a new album out? No. Does it even ****ing matter? No. Look, Stevie Nicks – vocalist for Fleetwood Mac when the remaining members temporarily bury respective hatchets anywhere other than in one another's backs, and a solo artist unsurpassed in terms of reality-building and mystique – at this point in her career is a singular figure who exists slightly outside of all pop narratives and promotional obligations. To say nothing of the mythmaking! Does she live in a castle by the ocean all by herself? Her only company being a small flock of regal doves, attentively watching as she plays an ivory piano long into the night? Well, yes, duh, but we're more interested in her total autonomy in her art and her work and her life. There are no Svengalis, no collaborators, no dead weight – and even above that, the lethal, sleek cyber-witch hooks and choruses embedded in songs like "Edge of Seventeen," "Stand Back," "Bella Donna" and the "Nightbird." She doesn't even have to touch the goddamn Fleetwood Mac songbook if she doesn't feel like it. At this point in the game, going to see Stevie Nicks live is akin to a religious pilgrimage; go pay your tribute to a pop Oracle of Delphi.

Stevie Nicks Works Her Magic On Amway Center Crowd

Stevie Nicks is no stranger to the Amway Center. Her appearance last night at Orlando’s premiere concert arena was her third in the past five years (she was here as a solo artist with Rod Stewart on their Heart & Soul tour in 2012 and back again as a member of Fleetwood Mac in 2015). And it’s safe to say, third time is a charm for Stevie. With her 24 Karat Gold tour, and at 68-years-old (an age she readily offers up from the stage), Nicks is performing at the top of her game.

Nicks equated her show to sitting around with friends in a very, very large living room, singing some of her favorite songs and providing the backstory for many of them. And that is exactly how the show, which opened with the lesser known “Gold and Braid,” feels.

Next up was her hit “If Anyone Falls.” Accompanied by scenes from the song’s original video, it looked (the multimedia effects used in the show were gorgeous) and sounded amazing. Nicks, who may have had some vocals rearranged these days to cut down on the use of the upper range (although that was never really her forte to begin with) has never sounded better.

The show was replete with fun trivia, probably already known to the most rabid of fans, but new to the casual Nicks admirer. For instance, she was once romantically involved with record producer Jimmy Iovine, who happened to be her gateway to one of the musicians who play prominently in her evenings’ stories, Tom Petty.

Having readied her first solo album, Bella Donna, she was still without a certified hit single for the album. An eventual meeting with Petty produced their smash duet, “Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around,” and sent the debut album on its way. While much of the Petty part was performed by legendary guitarist Waddy Wachtel, Nicks brought Chrissy Hynde (who had opened the night with The Pretenders) on stage to sing along with her.

Those waiting for her signature twirl didn’t have long to wait. It first appeared at the end of the Nicks penned Fleetwood Mac tune “Gypsy,” but only as a teaser of sorts. The big twirls would be coming later.

One of the stories, the story of how the cape worn on the Bella Donna album cover was acquired, was accompanied by the real deal cape, an item that she purchased for $2000 in 1981. And to this day, much like Nicks herself, the cape shows little signs of age.

Of all the stories told during the evening, one of the most moving was how her song “New Orleans,” from In Your Dreams, was inspired by news footage of a hurricane bearing down on the titular city in 2005. “Time passes and people forget,” she said when introducing the song. “If you write it down, they don’t.” The song, she said, was a picture of how she always wanted to see the city, no matter what the destruction of Hurricane Katrina may have brought to the city.

Decked out in a fur coat reminiscent of a Cruella de Vil wrap, Nicks performed “Moonlight (A Vampire’s Dream),” revealing that the song itself was the impetus for the In Your Dreams album. She also shared that the song was solely influenced by the Twilight saga. “I don’t usually write songs about romantic, dumb movies, but this story really inspired me,” she told the audience after the song’s conclusion.

Those who had been waiting for full-on twirl got it big during the performance of her smash hit “Stand Back,” but the true treat was the revelation of that song’s beginnings. Seems it was a song she came up with as a companion of sorts to the Prince hit “Little Red Corvette.” Not wanting to do anything with it without gaining the purple one’s permission, Nicks tracked him down, received his blessing, and even had him help out on the recording of the song that she claims can be played right along with the Prince tune and it will fit like a glove (still yet to try it).

Perhaps the most vivid story of the night was told before her final encore number. When her first musical partnership with Lindsey Buckingham, Buckingham Nicks, was dropped from Polydor Records, money became tight and beau Buckingham took up a gig filling in for one of the Everly Brothers. They relocated to Aspen, where Nicks and a girlfriend stayed while Buckingham was on the road. An invitation to dinner one night with some wealthy Aspen residents found Nicks in their gorgeous mountain home before heading out to eat. Stunned by the view, Nicks, who had brought her guitar along, begged off dinner and asked to stay in the house with the incredible view for a couple of hours to write a song. That song would not only question the future of her relationship with Buckingham but also reflect on the beauty of her Rocky Mountain surroundings. And the song? The amazing “Landslide,” which Nicks slayed as the concert’s closer.

Whether we will see Nicks returning to the Amway Center anytime soon is hard to tell, but if this does happen to be her last appearance at the venue, it was one amazing night, worthy of the 24 Karat Gold monogram

Looks like Orlando was a great show. Some really solid performances. She seems much more relaxed and in her groove than last year's shows, at least the one I attended. GDW was particularly impressive.

Stevie Nicks and Pretenders a confluence of legend (Amway Center)

This double-decked legacy bill was definitely one of those bucket-list concerts. I finally saw Stevie Nicks with Fleetwood Mac in 2009 but not solo. And I’d never seen the Pretenders.

Both are in the great rock canon but under slightly different chapters. Nicks is definitive of popular music culture at large while Chrissie Hynde’s place is more rooted in the underground. What they share, though, is that they’ve not only laid legitimate claim to hallowed ground historically dominated by men but they’ve done it on their own terms. Neither can really be said to be in their prime, but time isn’t the enemy to them as it is to all us mere mortals. No, these grandes dames are legend.

Of course, none of that makes them fresh, exactly. In the Pretenders’ case, however, a new look beyond their classic catalog could change that. Hynde comes on the recent revival of the band with last year’s album Alone, which has the golden and very contemporary fingerprints of the Black Keys’ Dan Auerbach all over it. They played the hits, naturally, but they also dropped a bit of the new stuff, and it felt very now.

Although Hynde confessed to not hitting the high notes this night, her voice actually showed little signs of dust or rust. Its state and fitness were pretty astonishing, really. Besides, in person and presence, she’s still as ****ing cool as ever. The band, too, were good, even sporting an unexpected pedal steel. Even in the deep headlining shadow of Nicks, the Pretenders received a standing ovation.

Befitting both her place on the marquee and her stature, Stevie Nicks’ show was a duly grand production. Lushly instrumented, the set was a procession of pop songs – mostly solo material, some Fleetwood Mac – that embodied their respective eras, especially the ‘80s. In Tom Petty’s place, she brought Chrissie Hynde back out to sing on “Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around.”

But on this tour, her set list went a little out of the way. Besides the hits, she took the license she’s surely earned to perform material both newer and unearthed, a move that mirrors her recent recordings. When I saw Nicks with Fleetwood Mac, it took a while for her voice to warm up and hit stride. This time, that solid-gold instrument was ready for action from the jump.

But even though the singer came to play, this event was equally about Stevie Nicks the figure. With ample storytelling time built in, the night was as much a personal flip through a real-life rock & roll memoir as it was a concert. No argument there. The old less-talk-more-rock maxim does not apply with such storied icons. In fact, the converse can be true when you’re being regaled by firsthand tales inhabited by giants like Tom Petty and Prince, punctuated by projections of historical photos and artifacts like wardrobe from classic albums.

Whether in song or story, Stevie Nicks’ presence is what carried the night. But beyond what radiated from the stage, the buzz surrounding it – between the sea of shawls and scarves and the fact that my ears were blown out not by the music but the screams of superfans – was proof that the cult of Stevie is alive. When she finally did one of her twirls, the roof seemed on the verge of peeling back. Yes, Stevie forever.
