Default Contemporaries circa 1975-82

Curious as to what folks here would think of as FM's peers and close cousins musically from the Buckingham-Nicks period (aside from the obvious being things they contributed to by Bob Welch, Walter Egan and John Stewart etc.).

I guess The Eagles is a pretty obvious comparison lacking only female vocals (and I prefer John McVie bass to almost anything).

I'm not sure I see much in common with Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers outside of the Stevie Nicks collaboration. Maybe a bit with some of Tusk. Speaking of which could Joe Jackson or Elvis Costello have been an influence on Tusk the album? I loved Joe Jackson at the time and hated Tusk probably because as a double LP it cost more, had an annoying looking cover, and sounded so different from what I expected.

Other possibly analogous albums I was buying around the Rumours time period were by Kansas, Chilliwack, Bob Seger, Styx, ELO, Wings, Journey, REO Speedwagon (just Hi-Infedility) and The Police. Other possible peers might be Ambrosia, Foreigner, Hall & Oates, Chicago?

Heart always comes to mind, because not all that many bands had two female leads, but FM did and so did Heart.

Well, some of my favourite bands (sorry if I repeat them all the time!) and some dates (and coincidences) about their album releases:

Fleetwood Mac
1975 - Fleetwood Mac
1977 - Rumours
1979 - Tusk
1980 - Live
1982 - Mirage

Supertramp
1975 - Crisis? What Crisis?
1977 - Even In The Quietest Moments
1979 - Breakfast In America
1980 - Paris
1982 - Famous Last Words

Pink Floyd
1975 - Wish you were here
1977 - Animals
1979 - The Wall
1980 - Is There Anybody Out There?
1983 - The Final Cut

Genesis
1976 - A trick of the Tail / Wind & Wuthering
1978 - And Then There Were Three
1980 - Duke
1981 - Abacab
1983 - Genesis

ELO
1975 - Face The Music
1976 - A new world record
1977 - Out of the Blue
1979 - Discovery
1980 - Xanadu
1981 - Time

Their next albums were released between 1985 and 1987. All of them recorded albums in 1980. It's nice to hear what kind of music they made on the same years!

ABBA..megaplatinum selling band with 2 splitting couples and toward the end generated some killer divorce pop..The Winner Takes It All rivals anything on Rumours for this type of song and Agnetha Faltskog's chilling ,committed vocal performance is one for the ages.

I agree with Abba. Though often considered disco, they have a strong folk rock sensibility in their music. Plus the relationship drama/dynamic you outline.

Also:

Richard & Linda Thompson
Shoot Out the Lights (1982)

Imagine paying $1000 to hear "Don't Dream It's Over" instead of "Go Your Own Way"

Fleetwood Mac helped me through a time of heartbreak. 12 years later, they broke my heart.
