Default Neil Finn at Largo in L.A.

I just checked my email and wondered, "oh, who might the surprise guests be?" If I didn't have tickets to a "Disneyland After Dark" Star Wars event the same night, I'd be one of the curious!

Hope to hear back from those that go,

This show was really interesting. First and foremost there were multiple guests but the only fleetwood mac related guest was Mike Campbell on two songs and tellingly they did a version of "Man of the World" that was incredible.

Some observations: Neil is really really fun. At this concert, which was a smaller venue, he was fairly low key and not afraid to fiddle around or make a mistake. He was engaging and funny and while he wasn't shy speaking at the mike he didn't let it overwhelm the show either. I actually think his energy will be an awesome fit and will be interesting to see how it changes up the band (if it does). He was clearly more of a go with the flow kind of guy and based on the printed set list it looks like he even made some on the fly changes.

He is an excellent singer both on his own stuff and on the material he didn't write (In addition to Man of the World, Mike and Neil did a Bowie cover that was also amazing). Now I will say I didn't get a sense of him as some sort of virtuoso guitar player but he is an incredible multiple instrumentalist who shifted multiple times during the night between guitars, pianos, etc. As for virtuoso guitarist skills - when Mike took the stage it seemed he very much outclassed everyone else on that stage in this area (not too surprising as I don't think Neil bills himself that way). Mike was insanely good and his solo-ing during Man of the World and Moonage Daydream were awesome.

Both guys tended to be a bit more into the idea of "Jam sessions" onstage than any of the current Mac (other than maybe Mick). I know Lindsey pretty much kept the surprise soloing down - we knew we'd have one during So Afraid and Go Your Own Way and Come when it was in the setlist but these guys like to really jam on the songs (based on the limited showing on display) and again it will be interesting to see how that might change up the band and the setlist.

I've rambled here but overall they both were excellent and seemed excited to be playing together. There was a funny moment early on in the show when someone yelled out "Go Your Own Way" and Neil joked he should know it by now but he didn't and "just you wait."

While I am bummed about Lindsey not being in the band and however it went down everyone should be ashamed it got to that place but I am very excited for the new possibilities there may be rather than the one or two songs we haven't heard and all the others being done in the exact same arrangements they've always been. Hopefully this tour is something genuinely new and the energy of these two guys and their respective skills were electric onstage.

Ty, that sounds promising and very like Neil. Bowie was evidently an early inspiration for him, and I saw on youtube a version he did of 'Space Oddity' (which was awesome until the second singer came in who wasn't so good). He genuinely seems to enjoy working with others and trying new things - sometimes completely on the fly. He has a dry sense of humour which is common in our part of the world - and can sometimes end up being taken seriously by those not so familiar. I'm wishing him the best.

(Tried seeing if there's some of it on youtube but so far I think it's just scam clips that want you to go to another link for a supposed 'live stream', no way I'd risk it.)

Thank you so much for posting, poetinmyheart. That is so awesome Neil sang Man of the World, and your post is making me seriously consider seeing FM after all this tour.

Fleetwood Mac’s New Guitar Team Debuts as a Fiery Duo at Neil Finn Show in L.A.
The Heartbreakers' Mike Campbell sat in, turning the Largo pop-up into a mini-preview of fireworks fans can expect on tour.
By Chris Willman @chriswillman

What kind of additions Neil Finn and Mike Campbell will make to Fleetwood Mac lineup is a question that will have to wait till the newly reconfigured lineup goes on tour in October. But at Largo Thursday night (May 3), some 280 fans got a partial glimpse as a pop-up show by father-and-son partners Neil and Liam Finn found Campbell as a surprise guest on two songs, one of them a deeper-than-deep Mac track.

“Playing at Largo is really about having wonderful surprises occur,” said the elder Finn, “and I’d like to welcome to the stage now a wonderful guitar player I’ve just had the extreme pleasure of learning how to play with — and there’s still more to learn, but for now let’s welcome Mike Campbell!” They then proceeded to perform a short but sweet version of Fleetwood Mac’s 1969 single “Man of the World,” a Peter Green song obscure enough that there was no applause of recognition when it kicked off, with most in the audience probably assuming it was yet another unreleased tune off the Finns’ upcoming album.

Stevie Nicks said in a recent interview with Rolling Stone that the new version of the group would use the tour to spotlight at least a little material from the era before she and now-departed Lindsey Buckingham joined the band. So Finn and Campbell dusting off a really, really pre-Buckingham-Nicks chestnut suggests they’re taking that idea seriously… or maybe the two guitarists just thought it would be a fun first- practice exercise of their own accord.

In any case, there was no danger of the other song Campbell sat in on going unrecognized: a six-minute rendition of Davie Bowie’s “Moonage Daydream,” which had Campbell doing the initial coda soloing in the familiar Mick Ronson style, but which eventually built into a twin-lead jam with Finn that really gave an idea of the fireworks that could happen in arenas later this year while Christine McVie and Stevie Nicks stand back.

“You’ve all had your tickets since last Christmas,” Finn joked early in the set, an allusion to the show only having been announced at noon the day before, later acknowledging that the quick-draw fans are “possibly the same people that have won a lot of prizes on the radio.”

The only other reference to impending bigger venues came when someone called out a request for “Go Your Own Way,” the kind of joke Fin’s probably going to have to get used to it at solo (or duo) shows. “I should be ready to start it up by now,” he said. “Just you wait.”

Other guests included Wendy Melvoin, who spent six months in New Zealand in the early 2000s working on Finn’s “One All” album. She mentioned having worked with a number of celebrated musicians in her time, “but this one was life-changing.” (Largo’s Finn-devoted audience was not one to call out, “Wait, more than the other guy?”) Largo regular Jon Brion sat in on multiple instruments, sitting alongside Finn band member John Carrol Kirby for a double-piano solo on “Moonage Daydream” — at the senior Finn’s request, after he called “John” back to the stage and realized they were both headed for the bench.

Liam Finn acknowledged at one point that the audience was being patient for a set that consisted “half of material you’ve never heard before” — actually, only a third, since five of the 17 songs came from their yet-to-be-announced first joint album project. Others came from the father’s or son’s solo catalogs, with only three Crowded House choices, the highlight being a particularly primal guitar-jam version of “Private Universe.” A transplanted New Zealand psych-pop guitarist of note, Conan Mockasin, played a peculiarly appealing style of underwater-sounding guitar throughout and sang lead on his own “Why Are You Crying?” The two-hour show began and ended with its most ancient non-Fleetwood Mac tunes, Split Enz’s “Sweet Dreams” and “Message to My Girl,” the latter introduced by Liam as the song his dad wrote for his mum, Sharon, who also made a fleeting appearance in Thursday’s band, “before I was even a twinkle in the eye.” Actually, both the song and Liam came out in 1983… a very good year in Finn history.

No other Finn shows are on the books except for a series of symphonic dates in Australia and New Zealand, as Fleetwood Mac rehearsals get into serious gear this summer.

I already posted on another thread (not sure where exactly I should be posting about Neil) but here are some more descriptions of the show from a Neil Finn forum. Recording not allowed there so I don't guess we'll see footage. Some people think Stevie was also at the show, in the audience. http://www.frenzforum.com/topic/neil...75276121814383

Looks like he is performing another show. No guarantees about the same guests but if anyone else wants to check it out...

Fleetwood Mac's new guitar team jams in LA

Neil Finn, above, jammed with Mike Campbell at an LA show before the pair debut for Fleetwood Mac.

Glad to hear this review. It's pretty much exactly how I thought it would go down.
Still deeply disappointed about Lindsey, but I tend to always look forward on the creative front. Would much rather hear a new combo with a different set list than the same predictable greatest hits show; which is why I didn't get tickets for the last few tours.
I'll be going to at least one LA show at the end of the year. Mike Campbell did it for me - easily the most exciting guitar player to watch live, this side of Lindsey Buckingham.

Thanks for clip!

Neil is viewed as a very capable rhythm guitarist. However I don't know if he's ever seriously worked alongside a lead guitarist this caliber.

In Australia at least, the 'pub rock' scene of 70s and 80s tended towards 'no frills' hard driven riffs rather than extended, complex lead solos.

Our top guitarists are probably Angus Young, Tommy Emmanuel, Ian Moss. That perhaps sums it up.
