Default Best version of "Like Crying"?

Then Play On or the boxed set, or perhaps one that I don't even know about? I think I like the vocals and arrangements on the box set version the best.

I would have to agree with you, the Vernon produced take on the box set captures the song perfectly.
Like many of Danny's songs, it is extremely fragile, it's subtleties difficult to capture without smudging or shattering them compeletly.
Even the BBC recording (I usually prefer their BBC recordings) somehow misses the magic of the box set version (IMO)

Yes, I feel like they're trying too hard or overdoing it on the Then Play On version. Maybe that's not what it is, but I can't figure how to describe it. Now that you've mentioned the BBC recording I'm looking forward to hearing that one of these days. I'll probably wind up still saying the box set version is my fave, though.

Another vote for the boxed set version. Overall it's not one of my favorite Danny Kirwan songs. I've never been crazy about the Then Play On version, and the BBC version - on the Live at the BBC 2-disc set - I like even less (and as BklynBlue notes, the BBC versions of songs are very often superior to the album versions). I think the boxed set version is cleaner, simpler, and captures the interplay between Kirwan & Green better than the others.
