However, every time I hear one of Ashley's stories it reminds me of how gracious, loving and caring Stevie really is. I loved hearing Ashley recount her most recent meeting with Stevie and describe Stevie's comments on the Dixie Chicks and the Dove. The Dove story had me pissing my pants laughing so hard....complete airhead Stevie at her best.

Anyway...carry on with the meeting stories. They are all fantastic. Especially the OSOTM one. I can totally hear Stevie in that low, husky, four in the morning F Me voice saying "See somethin you like?". Rawr.
Pip said, "Where can I read this?"

Yeah, I've been on Mick's board, Burnish, and this one, and for some reason I haven't read this story (maybe Ashley posted during a time I was really busy and not very active on the boards and I just totally missed it). Or am I mistaken that Ashley posted this stuff at all and you just met her in person and she told you these stories? If there's anywhere we can read about the Dixie Chicks and Dove stuff please let us know. (Maybe I did read it already, come to think of it--I have no idea!).

Bumping a thread that has not been posted in for over 10 years just because it's more interesting than any of the current ones.

Thanks for the bump Blue Denim, brings back memories:

Yes, met her twice (2) , TISL at the radio station doing a private interview and promotion. My BIL was the head of advertising in Chicago and we were mano-a-mano, just her and I (surprised at how short she actually is without the stacks) and at WTTW mano-a-mano again). Even got a treasured poster from TISL that she signed in front of me. Some of the softest hands I've ever felt. Sweet, almost shy in demeanor, BUT you could feel a presence about her. Her skin is porcelain white and very clear. This was over 10 years ago and I've never forgotten it.

I have met her back in 2011 on the Oprah show. It is a long story so bear with me.

So here is the story about how I wound up at the Oprah show. A good friend of mine had started a Facebook page called get Stevie on the Oprah show. I joined the group and like other people would post comments related to Stevie and / or the quest to get her on the Oprah show. Then last summer/Fall (I can’t recall exactly) I had seen a link on Facebook that Oprah was looking for guest suggestions. It was her final season and they were looking for people to submit suggestions regarding famous people who have never been featured on the show during its 25 year run. They had a form where you can submit your request via a small letter where you briefly stated your case. I of course being the super fan of Stevie Nicks requested that Oprah have Stevie on the show.

In my letter I talked about Stevie Nicks releasing a new CD in the spring and having her on to promote it would be great. I should stress that it never crossed my mind that I would be there at the show. I just figured if Oprah were to feature Stevie as a guest on her show that would be cool.

So the fall and winter months come and go and during that time I had applied for several positions in the OPL and also been to some concerts as well as celebrating my 30th birthday in Toronto with another one of my favourite singers. Melissa Etheridge. Because of all this, the letter I had sent had completely slipped my mind. Then on March 21 I was working my evening shift at Stittsville and decided to take my break. When I went on my break I brought my I Pod I touch with me to the staff room as we have wireless internet access in the branch so I knew I could check my email and such. I log into my yahoo account and there is an email from an Allyson Kearns a producer of the Oprah show. The email stated that they had received my letter and wanted more info including a recent picture of me. As you can imagine I couldn’t believe what I was reading. Part of me was suspicious that it might be a scam yet in my mind I was thinking what if it isn’t?

I called my mom and my brother in hysterics as I couldn’t contain my excitement. Everyone at work was all excited mainly because they could see how excited I was. After some discussion, it was decided that I would go home to my parents (where allot of my Stevie memorabilia was in storage anyway) and take a picture of me with most of my merchandise on display. I also sent a more detailed letter and a picture of myself and waited.

Unbeknownst to me one of my sisters got to thinking that perhaps the Oprah staff were choosing between several candidates and in order to make my story stand out she not only created a Facebook page called Get Matt On The Oprah Show (where people could click like to help support me) she also sent an email to various news agencies (CTV, A CHANNEL, CBC etc). CBC Radio took the bait and called me and my sister for a little more on the story. Next thing I knew I was being interviewed by Allan Neale on the CBC Radio show “All in a Day” where I got to tell my story and in a way solicit help from listeners to help out with the Facebook campaign.

Two weeks went by and while the campaign was ongoing it was starting to lose momentum as we had not heard anything more from the producer since the initial email. During this time we received word that not only was Stevie Nicks going to be taping an Oprah show appearance on Fri April 8th but that Pat Benetar, Salt N Peppa, Sister Sledge and Joan Jett would be there as well. It was going to an episode devoted to Rock Goddesses.

Then on Monday April 4th once again I am at work and I decide to check my phone messages at home. The only message is one from Allyson (The same producer who initially contacted me)stating that I have been invited to the taping of the Oprah show this Fri and I can bring 3 guests (Talk about cutting it pretty close!!!) I call my mom and we try to figure out how we can do this since flights at the last minute would be very expensive if we could even get anything at all. Thankfully my Mom had lots of points on her credit card so she was able to use her points to help offset the cost. In the end our trip cost us around $158.00 which was basically service fees for redeeming so many points.

The difficult part for me was choosing who in my family should go. I think in retrospect I should have just drawn names from a hat to avoid anyone feeling left out as it would have been purely luck of the draw. In the end I decided on my Mom, my Twin Brother, and one of my older sisters (The one who started the Facebook Campaign).
We booked our flights and would be departing Thursday morning. (My sister was flying from Halifax where she lives and was going to be meeting us in Chicago at the airport) Unfortunately the day of our departure there was fog in Chicago so all flights to Chicago were delayed. As the morning wore on I was getting very nervous as I had a date that I wasn’t about to miss. My brother had not been on a plane in almost 11 years and he was not enthusiastic about flying. We finally boarded our plane at around 1:30 and when my brother sat down I thought I was looking at a woman going into labour as he was breathing very heavily with his eyes closed. I was not sure if he would make it on the plane but he did and everything was fine. I myself had not flown in almost 10 years but last year I flew to Toronto twice and Boston once in a bid to get over my anxiety to travel on a plane. I still am not 100 percent sold on flying but I will fly as I tell myself I can get to my destination faster.

We finally arrived in Chicago around 3:45 and while we were bummed that we lost most of our first day (which we wanted to use for exploring the city) we were still glad to finally have arrived in the windy city. The weather throughout or trip was overcast and a little chilly although the day we left for home, the beautiful weather was coming. Our hotel was the “Hotel Monaco” right downtown near Trump Towers. In relation to Oprah’s studio it was great as it a short cab ride from our hotel to the studio.

Our first night was spent having dinner at a fantastic restaurant where the pasta was fantastic. Easily one of the best meals (if not the best) meal I have ever had. I tried to sleep but the excitement of tomorrows big day was too much for me. Even at breakfast the next day I could hardly eat as my stomach was in knots.

The day of the taping arrived and we were very much looking forward to our adventure. We still were not sure what would be in store for us when we got there. One thing that made us all mad was that the FAQ we received from Oprah’s producer stated that were absolutely no phones, cameras or recording devices allowed. That was not entirely true. Oh for sure they are not allowed, but you can have them on you up until the security checkpoint where you have to surrender them till after the show. (They get taken and bagged and you are given a ticket to hand in at the end of the day to receive your items). This made us mad because we wanted pictures of us in the line up and also pictures of the Studio from the outside. We ended up going back on Saturday to get some pictures. They were great but not the same as being there on the day of the taping with all of the other audience members.

Once you pass the security check point you are sent either upstairs or downstairs to sit and wait. While you wait a pair of elderly women who work as security fill you in on the rules and regulations (No food inside, no camera’s/phones, where the washrooms are etc). We were supposed to be seated in the show room at 12:15 but it was almost 1:00 before we were seated. While we waited in the holding area we struck up some pleasant conversations with people around us. I was able to meet Steve Gains the man from California who had started the Facebook campaign.

Right before we were seated, a voice on the loud speaker came on and said something along the lines of “Ladies and gentleman it is now time to begin taking your seats. We will begin seating you shortly. If you hear your name called then please come immediately to the lower level to be escorted your reserved seating. So then the crowd of people around me (Some of who I knew and others who I didn’t) were saying things like “it’s going to be you” and “You are the number 1 fan”. Sure enough after calling a few names we hear “Matt Denison party of 4”. The people around me were all cheering and clapping and saying things like “Way to go” and “Congratulations”. We take our seats in the audience (We were sitting in the very first row of the back half of the room with the camera crew slightly off to the side of where we sat). I should add that the Oprah show producers have the seating down to a science. You are told on the FAQ not to wear all white or beige and that dark colours are not advised .They actually say that bright colours work best and they even encourage you to buy yourself a new outfit for this once in a lifetime opportunity. They will also seat you according your attire as the cameras may capture you so they want it all to be seamless. As we wait a woman approaches us and introduces herself as Allyson the producer who has been communicating with me. She tells me to wait here once the show is over as I will be escorted backstage. By this time my stomach was in knots big time and I was extremely nervous.

Finally Oprah comes out in a red sequined top with blue pants and is standing right next to our row. She looks right at us for what seems like forever before starting the show. The stage was set up with candles and such so it was obvious that Stevie was on first. She came out and sang the Fleetwood Mac classic “Landslide” as she is singing Sheryl Crowe comes out on the stage and started to sing with her. This would be the theme of the show as other special guests joined the legends on stage. This included Avril Lavigne singing with Pat Benetar and Miley Cyrus singing with Joan Jett and The Blackhearts. Joan seemed out of place there. She looked really uncomfortable being there but she looked great.

Stevie was the only one given more than one segment which included a sit down interview where she was joined in the second half of the interview by Sheryl Crowe. The grand finale was Sister Sledge singing “We are Family” joined by all of the legends. The one thing I found cheesy was these rings that lit up that we were asked to wear and wave around during select performances. If you watch the show it comes off looking very cheesy.

During breaks in the taping Oprah took questions from the audience including one from my brother in which he asked what her first live concert was. Her answer was James Brown in 1968 when she was 14 years old and because she came home without her shoes her father got upset. There was a real emotional moment when a fellow Ottawa native in the audience got to tell Oprah that her mother was supposed to be here but she had suffered a brain aneurysm. She was quick to say that she was doing well but added that when she awoke her first response was “Can I still go to Oprah because if you discharge me I am going to Oprah”. The doctors were adamant that they would not be discharging her. Oprah had her come down and they took a picture together to give to her mom. That was very classy of Oprah to do that.

Finally at the end of the taping Oprah gives the audience a Cover Girl gift bag which includes make up, a copy of Joan Jett’s greatest hits and Pat Benetar’s new biography “Between a Heart and A Rock Place”. Now it was time for us to go backstage.

The best way to describe the backstage area is to say that it was like organized chaos. All the stars were hanging out talking with various people. Oprah walked by and stopped to talk to us saying to my brother that it was a great question that he asked. She obviously knew of my story as she said to us “You must be the twins and you must the mom and their sister”. I figure everyone in the audience must have a story and Oprah and her staff must know it all in the event they make it on camera. Allyson came over and talked to us while we waited for Stevie to come over.

At one point Pat Benetar came over and commented on how much she liked my sister’s shoes.

Finally the moment arrived when I was face to face with my Idol. I got to shake her hand and she gave me a hug. When we talked she confirmed to me the rumors that she was indeed playing the Glastonbury music festival this year. In response to being on the Oprah show she remarked to me that this was the biggest thing she had ever done which I responded with “Yeah you and me both” It was funny. She talked about her new album and that it was her “Little Rumors”. She was very adamant that this was the best work she has done and was excited for us all to hear it.

We got to talking about her tour and she said that she hoped to play places she has not been to in a while. I talked about Ottawa where I am from and the fact that she has not played here solo since 1989. She very graciously gave me a picture that was signed “To Matt much love Stevie Nicks as well as a hand drawn picture with a letter written on the back explaining the origins of her song “Rhiannon”. Suddenly she saw my twin and remarked oh my god there are two of them quick get me something I can’t give something to one and not the other. I then said something funny like “Sure you can he is nobody. We don’t even know him”

Eventually it was time to leave and so we collected our things and off we went. The day was one we will never forget.

Our final day was spent sightseeing taking a tour of the Navy Pier, the John Hancock building with its magnificent views of the city. We then headed to the airport for the journey home. This was a moment in time that I will never forget.

If you search Get Matt On The Oprah Show on Facebook you can see all the video clips articles etc.

This is an article my work posted to all City of Ottawa employees. OPL stands for Ottawa Public Library.

OPL employee’s inspiration from Stevie Nicks’ music strikes perfect note with Oprah Winfrey Show

Posted in Employee recognition, Health and wellness

The power of music can take us back to special moments and people or help us to overcome difficult times. For Ottawa Public Library employee, Matthew Denison, Stevie Nicks’ music has been an inspirational force in changing his life.
Over their 30 years, Matthew and his twin brother have coped with learning disabilities, stuttering, and seizures. They also have experienced difficulties in making friends and finding employment.

Stevie Nicks’ music has been a source of inspiration and motivation for Matthew, especially her 1986 single Has Anyone Ever Written Anything for You. He attributes the powerful and inspirational messages in her songs in helping him carry on and overcome adversity.

As part of her talk show’s final season, Oprah Winfrey asked fans to suggest potential guests who have never appeared over the show’s 25 years. That call to action had Matthew sending an e-mail to the show’s producers to plead his case for the former Fleetwood Mac singer, Stevie Nicks.

After reading his e-mail, Oprah Winfrey’s staff wanted to know more about his story. Furthermore, Oprah’s website has requested to hear from all fans of Stevie Nicks and more specifically why they want to meet the singer.
To further the chances of making his dream a reality, Matthew and his older sister also launched a Facebook campaign to help get on the show and meet the artist that has touched his life.

We’re thrilled to report that all of Matthew’s hard work and determination has paid off. His wish to pay tribute to Stevie Nicks takes flight today as he makes his way to Chicago. And he will be front and centre tomorrow at the Oprah Winfrey Show taping headlined by a singer who has struck a powerful and positive note in his life.
Check out the show on Wednesday, April 13 and see how this story ends and a dream comes true.

What a great story!! Very inspirational. I like to see more stories like this. City of Ottawa employees are hard and dedicated workers. They are also individuals who have dreams and aspirations. People with lives outside of work. It is refreshing to see another side of a city employee. In The Loop – Keep up the great work!

Yes he does , We are identical twins in almost every way. I began working out in 2012 and look much more muscular now then in those pictures where I am very skinny. That is one difference between my brother as he is very skinny but I am not anymore.

He is slightly taller then me as well.
