Default Boston Globe Review

i hope no one's posted this one already. . .i didn't see it anywhere, but apologies if i'm mistaken.

McVie Gets Personal on New Solo Album

By Steve Morse, Globe Staff | September 10, 2004

When Christine McVie left Fleetwood Mac, she had no intention of making another album. "If I had, I would have stayed in Fleetwood Mac," she says.

The musical gods had other ideas -- and McVie got the songwriting bug. She hooked up with her nephew, Dan Perfect, and they crafted music in her studio in a converted barn next to her manor house in Kent, England. The upshot is a simple but brilliant pop album, "In the Meantime," released this week.

"The record was made under no pressure," McVie says from her home. "There were no people breathing down our necks and no road crew and no engineers and no managers. It was just Dan and I. He'd come back to the house and I'd cook him a bowl of pasta, then we'd go back in the studio and do a bit in the evening. I think that's why it sounds so relaxed."

It's the first solo album in nearly 20 years from McVie, known for singing such Fleetwood Mac hits as "Don't Stop," "You Make Loving Fun," "Over My Head," and "Songbird." She was part of the band's vocal triangle with Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham, and it's great to hear her singing again -- and with such a personal focus. The album deals with the rise and fall of a relationship.

"Yes, I would say this is the most autobiographical album that I've done so far," says McVie. "Normally I step into other people's shoes or into imaginary scenarios. These songs were written about somebody specific. . . . They're about a guy I was seeing, and it didn't pan out."

McVie's fluid pop songcraft is evident -- and there's a wonderful lack of pretension in the music. "I would hope it's innocent and quite naive in places," she says. There are no famous guests other than singer/guitarist Billy Burnette (who was in Fleetwood Mac in the late '80s and early '90s) and drummer Steve Ferrone of the Average White Band. "Mostly it's just me and my nephew," says McVie. "He went to the Academy of Art in London and he's a painter, but he also happens to be a great guitar player. . . . We got along very well and, frankly, we had a bloody good laugh most of the time."

I haven't seen this before. This is a very interesting review & interview. I noticed that she said these songs are "about a guy I was seeing, and it didn't pan out". Wow, this is a news to me. This album must be about someone new, not her ex-husband.

And, I agree with this reviewer that In The Meantime is a simple but brilliant pop album.

Thanks for posting.

that struck me as well. however, 'easy come easy go' was written with eddy. . .so i wonder if she's just being coy about not coming right out and saying that they're all about him.

although, it's entirely possible that they wrote the music together awhile back and chris just fitted it with new lyrics later on.

I think 'Easy Come Easy Go' was written a while back. In 1992 I think.

And thank you so much for posting these, I hadn't read it before.

I think it's about Eddy too. I just don't think she wants to give him the ego boost of saying 'The songs are mostly about my ex-husband.'

IMO just saying he's 'a guy' is a nice little dig. Yes, I'm a spiteful person.

Thanks for posting that review!!

Question

I've said before I thought they were about Eddy or another relationship post Eddy that we don't know about.

My money has always been on Eddy but now ... well ... maybe.... er I dont know!

I guy I was "seeing" - she was with Eddy from 1983 until around 1997/1998 I think - that's hardly "seeing"

Gail

PS Thanks for posting this - very interesting

I know there's some who care what the songs are about which is cool. But the most important thing here is that the reviewer likes the album. Art first, gossip second.

That totally reminds me of how Christine WOULD say it, about her husband..."A guy I was seeing and it didn't pan out" This made me so happy - Christine's so stand up and cool, and i love when people really appreciate her, especially cause her songs are often my less faves on the albums... she deserves every iota of respect and admiration she gets....and more, I should say!

Maybe I misunderstood something, but I thought she'd only be allowed to stay in Fleetwood Mac if she toured with the band this time around. Is this Chris spinning a little here?

I think part of its' brilliancy is its' simplicity.

I'm so ready to spend an evening with Christine! Or is that soiree?!

It seems to me the majority of the North American reviews are positive whereas the majority of the European reviews were negative. The Boston Globe is a big paper. I'm glad such a positive assessment of her work was laid out there.

I've noticed the same thing, although I have no idea why that is other than maybe the American critics are more willing to accept pop music than those critics outside of North America.
