Beatles back at no. 1 on iTunes today; major artists share their favorite Fab Four tunes

There are few things surer in life than death, taxes, and the continued selling powers of the Beatles.Today, the Fab Four bowed at no. 1 on iTunes with their mammoth 2000 hits collection 1, handily stealing the top spot from Lil Wayne’s That Carter IV and lording over the likes of Adele’s long-running 21 and Maroon 5′s newly revitalized Hands All Over, among others.

Sean Lennon to Score "Alter Egos" Film, Written & Directed By Jordan Galland
The Second Film Score Collaboration For the Duo Currently In the Works

NEW YORK, Sept. 7, 2011 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- Sean Lennon has signed on to score the forthcoming film, Alter Egos, written and directed by Jordan Galland and starring Danny Masterson, Kris Lemche, Brooke Nevin and Joey Kern. Lennon, who also makes a cameo as a super villain, began working on the project earlier this summer, composing what Galland describes as "an epic superhero sound."This is the second time that Lennon has scored a film by Jordan Galland, the first of which was the critically acclaimed Rosencrantz And Guildenstern Are Undead, an indie romantic comedy about vampires, Shakespeare and the Holy Grail, released in the summer of 2010.Alter Egos, which began production this past spring in New York City and Long Island, follows an underappreciated superhero at a time when superheroes have lost government funding and all public support.

Yoko Ono Exhibit Opens at University

A traveling display of artwork by Yoko Ono opened at Stony Brook's University Art Gallery on Tuesday, preceded by a presentation that gave the history of Ono's work for peace, including her worldwide "War is Over If You Want It" campaign with husband and former Beatle John Lennon.

The exhibit will remain open at the university until October 15, when Lennon’s son, Sean, and Charlotte Kemp Muhl will perform there as the group The Ghost of a Saber Tooth Tiger.

Yoko Ono: Still giving peace a chance

"A dream you dream alone is only a dream/But a dream we dream together is reality"
-- "Now or Never" by Yoko Ono, 1972.Yoko Ono's career spans six decades -- before and now long after her relationship with John Lennon. For two years, Rhonda Cooper, director of Staller Center's University Gallery, has tried to snag the "Yoko Ono Imagine Peace" traveling exhibit since she was tipped off about the show by Stony Brook University sculpture professor Nobuho Nogasawa. Now it's here. And although there's no word yet if Ono herself will appear, her son, Sean Lennon, arrives at Staller for a concert on the exhibit's final day."There's an element of nostalgia to the show," says Cooper, as she was supervising its installation. "But the peace message is very clear."

HOUSTON, TX—

Imagine peace. That`s exactly what John Lennon wanted us to do over 40 years ago. And now, with the 10 year reflection of the 9/11 tragedy, that`s what Yoko Ono is asking us to do.Each morning, if you`re driving south on I-45 heading into town, you`ll see this billboard: Imagine Peace. It`s a temporary ‘peace’, on loan from and signed by Yoko Ono. She`s asking us to not only remember, but pay tribute to the tragedy that happened on September 11. Imagine Peace!

Pattie Boyd: Rock's Most Beautiful Muse

Pattie Boyd was the face of the '60s. Her blonde hair, deep bangs, long legs, and perfect pout got her on magazine covers and snared her a bit part in the Beatles' first film, A Hard Day's Night. She met George Harrison on the very first day of filming, and he asked her out—thinking that she looked exactly like Brigitte Bardot. She married the quiet Beatle, living a rarified life that few of us will ever experience. Boyd not only is famous for her iconic beauty, but for introducing the Fab Four to Maharishi Mahesh Yogi and also for leaving Harrison for his best friend Eric Clapton and inspiring some of rock's most heart-torn classics like Harrison's "Something," "I Need You,” and Clapton's "Layla" and "Beautiful Tonight."

Past Imperfect

Anyone who has ever listened to The Beatles’ Sergeant Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band–and that’s a few hundred million people at the last estimate–will know the swirling melody and appealingly nonsensical lyrics of “Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite,” one of the most unusual tracks on that most eclectic of albums. For the benefit of Mr. Kite
There will be a show tonight on trampoline
The Hendersons will all be there
Late of Pablo Fanque’s Fair—what a scene
Over men and horses, hoops and garters
Lastly through a hogshead of real fire!
In this way Mr. K. will challenge the world ! But who are these people, these horsemen and acrobats and “somerset turners” of a bygone age ?

Sound recording copyright extension could be passed imminently

After many years of very vocal campaigning, the copyright term for sound recordings in Europe may be quietly increased to seventy years next week following a meeting this week of the European Union’s Committee Of Permanent Representatives. As much previously reported, the sound recording copyright term is currently fifty years after release in Europe, compared to 95 years in the US, and the life of the creator plus seventy years for the rights that exist in lyrics and musical score.

The European record industry has been lobbying for some time for the sound recording copyright term to be extended, arguing the imbalance between European and US copyright terms, and between those enjoyed by music publishers and songwriters versus record companies and recording artists are unfair.

Those lobbying efforts became more prolific in recent years as the particularly valuable mid-sixties rock n roll catalogues – including the early Beatles and Rolling Stones recordings – started to approach the end of their fifty year terms. Labels like EMI still rely to an extent on royalties generated by music from that era, in EMI’s case the Beatles catalogue in particular.

Next, we struck out along Mercer Street, where we saw Anna Wintour herself pass by with her entourage, smartphones aimed at her from every angle. Taking this as a sign we were doing all right, we pressed on, past the weird live-mannequin window displays, to a store where instruments seemed to be getting set up. Who was playing there? Why, it was Sean Lennon's band, The Ghost of a Saber Tooth Tiger.

Did George Harrison have an affair with Madonna? Explosive film reveals new side to Beatles star

Another night of chaos and excess at Friar Park, George Harrison’s immense Victorian Gothic home in Henley, was seen through a haze of dope, cocaine and alcohol. As the evening in 1973 drew to a close, Harrison’s friend and houseguest Ronnie Wood took him aside and told him that he intended to sleep with the former Beatle’s wife Pattie Boyd that evening.Harrison’s response was to point to the room which Wood was sharing with his wife Krissie and say: ‘And I shall be sleeping there.

New mystery takes on Beatlemania

What happens when a former teen idol—now a recovering alcoholic looking for a comeback—is accused of murder? That’s the question Moorpark resident and Acorn employee Sally Carpenter was looking to answer when she wrote the first book in her Sandy Fairfax Teen Idol mystery series. In “The Baffled Beatlemaniac Caper,” from Oak Tree Press, the protagonist is Sandy Fairfax, a 1970s teen idol who recorded 10 gold albums and starred in the hit TV series “Buddy Brave, Boy Sleuth.”Now (in 1993, when the story is set) Sandy is 38, forgotten and hoping to make a comeback, starting with a guest appearance at a Beatles fan convention in Evansville, Ind.But Sandy is suspected of murder after a member of the Mersey Marvels, a Beatles tribute band, is shot. The former teen idol, who played a detective on TV, becomes an amateur sleuth as he tries to clear his name and solve the mystery.

You To Me Are Everything gave The Real Thing a massive number one hit back in 1976. But for band member Eddie Amoo, it was hardly a case of overnight success. He was more than ready for it after 13 years with The Chants, a Liverpool vocal group discovered by The Beatles, no less.“The Beatles discovered The Chants and launched us,” recalls Eddie who brings The Real Thing to Chequer Mead, East Grinstead, on Saturday, September 10.“The Beatles gave us like an apprenticeship. I was with them for 13 years before I got together with my brother Chris (for The Real Thing).“We were a vocal group in the tradition of American doo-wop and we met Paul (McCartney) at one of The Beatles’ gigs. Paul invited us to come to the Cavern to audition for The Beatles, basically out of curiosity. We just sang; we didn’t play instruments.

Give Peace a Chance
In my opinion this song should be the world-wide anthem in commemoration of all the thousands and thousands of human beings, who lost their lives due to war and misconceived patriotism.Today I wanna shout it out loud in memoriam of all the victims of 9/11.
May their souls rest in peace.

“Give Peace a Chance” is a song written by John Lennon, originally under the moniker Lennon/McCartney, released as a single in 1969 by the Plastic Ono Band on Apple Records, catalogue Apple 13 in the UK, Apple 1809 in the US. It is the first solo single issued by Lennon, and became an anthem of the American anti-war movement during the 1970s. It peaked at #14 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #2 on the British singles chart. The song was written during Lennon’s ‘Bed-In’ honeymoon: when asked by a reporter what he was trying to achieve by staying in bed, Lennon answered spontaneously “All we are saying is give peace a chance”; He sang the song several times during the Bed-In. Finally, on 1 June 1969, in Room 1742 at the Queen Elizabeth Hotel in Montreal, André Perry recorded it using a simple setup of four microphones and a four-track tape recorder rented from a local recording studio.

A house where the Beatles once drank

Most old boozers have a celebrity story or two. Corner any publican in a quiet minute and they’ll tell you about the time when Noel Gallagher came in, or the month George Best stayed. But few can have had as glittering a parade of punters through their doors as the Heroes of Alma, in St John’s Wood, north-west London.Located in Alma Square, a mere lofted drive from Lord’s cricket ground, the pub was the local for Abbey Road, the world’s most famous recording studio. When the Beatles were recording there during the Sixties, the Heroes of Alma was where they would beat a retreat for a restorative pint or two.

Beatles ‘1’ is No. 1 – again
Beatlemania never really dies, does it?

The Beatles album “1,” a collection of the Fab Four’s No. 1 hits that spent eight weeks as the nation’s No. 1 album in 2000 – and was the top-selling CD of the 2000-09 – premiered on iTunes Tuesday. You won’t need eight days a week to predict where it debuted. Yep, in the top spot.

And not just in the United States. “1” also hit No. 1 in Canada, Japan, the Netherlands, Mexico, Sweden, Spain, New Zealand and Greece, according to a press release from Capitol/EMI. Not bad for an album of songs that are already available on iTunes, thanks to the release of the Beatles’ entire catalog two years ago.

The extended Beatles family responded to the 9/11 tragedy in the best way they could -- music in the form of two big concerts. On Oct. 2, 2001, John Lennon's music was the centerpiece of "Come Together: A Night for John Lennon's Words and Music." Performers included Yolana Adams and Billy Preston, Dave Matthews, Cyndi Lauper, Dave Stewart, Lou Reed, Natalie Merchant, Craig David and the Stone Temple Pilots. All the musicians performed Beatles or John Lennon songs.

Also appearing were members of the acting community, including Kevin Bacon, Dustin Hoffman, Edie Falco, Ben Stiller, James Gandolfini and Kevin Spacey. The highlight was appearances by Sean Lennon and Yoko Ono. Sean Lennon sang "Across the Universe" with Moby and Rufus Wainwright and joined in at the end on "Give Peace a Chance" and "Power to the People."

Cliff Richards Law will extend copyright

The EU law unofficially named after the Peter Pan of Pop will see artists able to collect performer royalties for up to 20 more years than current laws allow. Well if a law extending music copyrights to 70 years then who else could it be named after but the only man to still be recording in his sixth decade in the business.

The unofficially named Cliff Richard’s Law would mean that musicians would retain the right to take royalties from their music for up to 70 years rather than the current 50. The law is expected to be pushed through in time to save a number of iconic 60s hits from slipping from their recording artists’ hands.Among the stars backing the move are The Who’s Roger Daltrey, who called it “extremely good news” while Dame Shirley Bassey said, “Unlike diamonds, copyright is not forever but I’m happy it will last a little longer.”

Current laws already copyright artist’s work for 70 years following their death, but the new law will concern the performance of tracks before then. Bands like the Rolling Stones and The Beatles were already covered but now the likes of Tom Jones and Shirley Bassey will be able to receive performer royalties for up to twenty years longer than before.

Stella McCartney has defied critics to be a name in her own right. When baby Stella Nina arrived into the world on September 13, 1971, born by emergency caesarean, her dad had just launched a solo music career.A year earlier he had quit the biggest band in the world. As Paul McCartney sat outside the operating theatre, anxiously awaiting his child’s safe delivery, he prayed she would be carried “on the wings of an angel”.And so, out of life and death trauma, the former Beatle gained a precious second daughter and an idea for his new group.Stella Nina was named in loving honour of her two maternal great-grandmothers. The Beatles at the Middlesbrough Astoria 1963

A few weeks ago we published a feature about the time when The Rolling Stones appeared at The Outlook Club on Corporation Road in Middlesbrough in 1963. This was the first time they had played outside the London area and we have received a lot of letters and emails about the event. But one young teenage member of the club missed out that night because she was broke and could not afford to go out. But just a few weeks earlier Margaret Spark (now Margaret Atkinson) had splashed the cash on seeing the number one band at the time, The Beatles.

Rock veterans win copyright fight

On Monday, the EU Council voted to extend the copyright on sound recordings from 50 to 70 years. The move follows a campaign by artists like Cliff Richard as well as lesser-known performers, who said they should continue to earn from their creations.Critics argue that many musicians will see little benefit, with most income going to big stars and record labels. The change applies to the copyright on studio recordings, which is often owned by record labels, rather than the right to the composition, which is owned by the songwriters.Under the 50-year rule, the copyright on songs by The Beatles, the Rolling Stones and The Who would have expired in the next few years.

Paul McCartney set to marry Nancy Shevell "imminently" in UK wedding

SIR Paul McCartney’s wedding to his American heiress girlfriend Nancy Shevell is “imminent”, friends believe. The couple flew in to the UK from New York last week and have been finalising what is expected to be a small family ceremony at the ex-Beatle’s Sussex farmhouse.Macca, 69, wants to avoid the circus that surrounded his doomed marriage to Heather Mills in 2002 in a huge 17th century Irish castle.“They will be marrying imminently,” a source said. “They are very excited and almost everything is in place. Friends and family have been put on standby.”

Song Review: “Look to the One” by The Vals

The Vals are from Belfast, Ireland and appeared in my inbox about 2 years ago when they told me what huge Beatles fans they were and how influenced their music has been by the Fab Four. At first, I thought they were just another band looking for attention, but I went to their site and gave their single “Yesterday Today“ a listen. The song will give you chills! They soon released their first album “Sticks and Stones” in October 2009 which I had fully intended on reviewing but for some reason, I never found the time. The album is amazing for a debut album…there is no doubt it is on my list of favorite albums along with my Beatles collection. There is no mistaking that these guys too are Beatles freaks !

Julian Lennon says new album was almost an accident

Julian Lennon says his new album, "Everything Changes," came about gradually.”I get twitchy if I don’t pick up a guitar or sit at the piano every now and then...I have to do it; I don’t have a choice,” he says in a press release. Eventually, he had the basic ideas for over 30 songs, 12 of which will be in "Everything Changes," which is produced by Lennon and Grant Ransom. The album was made with a little help from a few of his personal friends.

Yoko Ono: Play it by Trust

Yoko Ono’s Play it by Trust (1966/2011) is an all-white, interactive chessboard that functions as a metaphor for the futility of war and extends the artist’s interest in the expressive potential of chance. By eliminating the color-based opposition of one side versus another, Ono dooms any attempt to successfully “play” the game beyond a series of initial moves to ultimate failure. She thus encourages us to consider the aspects of humanity that unite rather than divide. Play it by Trust joins the many conceptual, musical, and performative works that Ono has created for over 40 years that evoke her dedication to the promotion of peace in our society. It was first exhibited in 1966 at the Indica Gallery in London and since then it has been re-presented in various sizes and for numerous different occasions. This presentation of Play it by Trust has been developed in cooperation with the opening of the World Chess Hall of Fame in St. Louis this fall.

Yoko Ono on Lady Gaga: 'She is Incredible'

The 78-year-old artist, who recently charted her eighth no. 1 dance single, marvels at pop's reigning queen and her own crossover success.Yoko Ono may be known for many things (chief among them: being the love of the late John Lennon's life), but one wouldn’t expect chart-topping dance artist to be one of them. As it turns out, nobody is more surprised than Ono herself.“Isn’t that amazing?” says the 78-year-old Ono. “I can’t believe it.* But it’s a good song.”

9/11 Remembered: Musicians' Reactions
September 2011
In 2001, artists shared their thoughts – all poignant, some prescient – on the World Trade Center attacks. Yoko Ono "I think we're going to create a new reality together. We are one mind, one body. And we have received an incredible shock to our body. This is a time for us to realize that we should not try, through anger or fear, to cut off another arm. That body has to live and survive. It's true what Mahatma Gandhi said: 'An eye for an eye only leaves the whole world blind.'"

A Conversation With Yoko Ono

The artist and activist talks with Patch about music, art and an exhibit of John Lennon's art that's coming to Princeton. When asked if John Lennon scheduled time to work on his drawings and artwork, Yoko Ono is quick to say no.

“He was not a scheduled person,” Ono says. Rather than specifying a time to draw, the music legend would start creating whenever he felt like it, she says.

“Gimme Some Truth — The Artwork of John Lennon “is on view at 19 Hulfish St. (next to Kitchen Kapers) in Palmer Square, Princeton, Sept. 16-18. Hours are: Sept. 16, 5-9 p.m., Sept. 17, 11 a.m.-7 p.m. and Sept. 18, 11 a.m.-6 p.m. For information, call 609-406-0503 or visit MercerStreetFriends.org

The Question for John Lennon's 71st Birthday: Did Yoko Ono Really Break Up the Beatles ?

In the annals of American pop music, no human being is more passionately hated by critics and fans alike than Yoko Ono, wife of the late Beatles John Lennon. More than 40 years after the band's break-up, she continues to draw the kind of venomous and hateful reactions usually reserved for child molesters and baby killers. She is reviled as the slithering, calculating harpy who insinuated herself into the life of John Lennon, driving a wedge that finally severed one of music's most productive and brilliant songwriting teams -- Paul McCartney and John Lennon -- and precipitated the break-up of the world's most beloved rock band, The Beatles.

Beatlefest coming to the Valley
September 14, 2011

CALEXICO — Valley Beatles fans can express their admiration for the iconic band during a Beatles-themed art show and Beatlefest in early October.

The Calexico Chamber of Commerce and John Leo Productions present Beatlefest on Oct. 8th 2011 at San Diego State University-Imperial Valley campus’ Rodney Auditorium. The event features John Leo & The Eggmen of Mexicali and falls one day before what would have been the late John Lennon’s 71st birthday.
“We’re very excited, because this is the first time John Leo Productions will bring this show to the Imperial Valley,” Calexico Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Hildy Carrillo said. “We wanted to make sure it kicked off in Calexico.”Carrillo, a Beatles fan herself, recalls running home to watch the band on the Ed Sullivan Show in 1964. She said the chamber saw this as “an opportunity to bring something different to the Valley.”

As previously reported, psychedelic weirdos the Flaming Lips are currently working on a song that will clock in at an astounding six hours in length. Now, frontman Wayne Coyne has spoken up about the track, entitled "I Found This Star on the Ground," and it's shaping up to be even more bizarre than we initially thought.I Found This Star on the Ground" will also include a long list of names of fans who donated money for the Humane Society and the Academy of Contemporary Music. Coyne estimated that there are over 200 names, and revealed that many of them are read by John Lennon's son Sean Lennon.
