250,000 visitors for Museum of Liverpool’s first month
.
Liverpool, 17 August 2011, Art Media Agency (AMA).
On 19 June, the British city celebrated the opening of its latest institution, the Museum of Liverpool. Four weeks later, the results are extremely positive, *announcing 250,000 visitors, or 8,300 per day. The administration’s target goal was easily succeeded, tripling their estimation of 78,000 people for the first month.Since its opening the museum is free, proposing an exhibition surrounding the theme of Liverpool and its inhabitants, with notably a section featuring “People’s Portrait” in which Mike McCartney presents his photography. In a different section of the museum, Ben Johnson’s The Liverpool Cityscape – temporarily exhibited at the Walker Art Gallery during the museums construction – is now on display. Johnson took three years to paint the piece that depicts Liverpool during its time as the European capital of culture. The museum also features works of art dedicated to the Beatles and local football teams Liverpool FC and Everton.

John Lennon: Producer

There’s been thousands of words written about John Lennon: Beatle or Songwriter or Musician or Activist or Wit, but there’s virtually nothing out there about his work as a Producer. The recent book, Starting Over: The Making of John Lennon and Yoko Ono’s Double Fantasy, captures all aspects of how the artist created what turned out to be his final statement, but in the process, author Ken Sharp provides a fascinating glimpse of how Lennon ran his sessions, got the sounds he wanted and cajoled those around him into giving their all.

Q&A: Yoko Ono
IN DECEMBER 2010, the last time Yoko Ono was at Billboard, she was being honored for a whopping five consecutive No. 1’s on the Billboard Dance Club Songs chart. With her just-released single “Talking To The Universe” climbing the same chart, the iconoclastic veteran artist took time out to chat about the DJ community’s affinity for her music, sharing a stage with Lady Gaga, Twitter, and her continuing work protecting and curating her late husband John Lennon’s music and legacy.

Billboard.com: “Talking To The Universe” is vying to be your next hit on Billboard’s Dance/Club Play chart. You already have a slew of No. 1’s on that chart. Were you surprised when your music was embraced by the DJ community? How has that, in turn, influenced how you make music ?

Yoko Ono: Many of my songs were dance orientated from way back. That’s because I LOVE DANCE! When I hear a dance number, just hearing the first eight bars, it immediately makes my body start moving and dancing. That’s how I was from a long, long time ago. I can’t help it. But now that I am very involved with making dance tracks, I feel I finally came home!

One thing I didn’t know, and now I know: DJs are in incredible competition, musically. And they are the most musically creative and sensitive people in all the music charts. I am amazed how they are.

Without their creativity, my songs could never have become No. 1. I have so much respect and love for the DJs on the dance chart, you just don’t know. One day, the dance charts will be the biggest chart in the music world. Because we all need to dance. This planet will be a fun planet when the judges in court will end the day with a dance !

The painting of the Beatles for the Cavern Club in Liverpool will be an accurate portrayal of them "drenched in sweat" says the artist doing the painting. SHANNON said today on the phone, "Fans will love it that there's sweat dripping down their faces, because that's the way it was for them performing and rocking out in the Cavern. It was hot as hell in there. Not many people look good sweating, but they look fantastic." At the moment she is currently appearing in Utah at the Ultimate Air Affair working on her John Lennon segment, and is creating quite a buzz at the fair with many interested onlookers as she paints.

There’s something in the way she airbrushes the Beatles

West Valley City » The brush never touched the canvas.
And yet, the eyes of John Lennon twinkled to life inside a West Valley City warehouse, animated by an invisible stream of paint-rich air and the hand of a woman recognized as the world’s greatest Beatles artist.Shannon MacDonald, an internationally acclaimed airbrush painter from New Jersey, chose the Beehive State to begin her portrait of Lennon, which will be mounted with a collage of the Fab Four this month in Liverpool’s Cavern Club, where the Beatles made their debut. Her work will be unveiled during the International Beatle Week celebration on Aug. 30 in Liverpool. But the Lennon portrait began to take shape a continent away within an airbrush studio replete with images of open-winged dragons, skull-headed pilots swooping in biplanes and even a fiery rendition of rock ’n’ roll Elvis Presley on nontraditional canvases ranging from snowboards to tabletops to car doors.

RAIN -- A Tribute to The Beatles -- and Riverdance Coming to Houston

In an expansion of its already announced season, Gexa Energy Broadway announced Thursday that it will be bringing two more shows to its 2011-12 season at the Hobby Center -- but you better move quickly, they will be here and gone in the proverbial blink of an eye.The window of opportunity to hear RAIN "perform the full range of The Beatles' discography live onstage," will be for just three shows on November 18 and 19. This will include, according to the Gexa press release, "the most complex and challenging songs that The Beatles themselves recorded in the studio but never performed for an audience."The release also notes that RAIN has been together longer than The Beatles and that the tribute band has "every song, gesture and nuance" of the Fab Four down pat. First glance at the band members makes it clear it wasn't just The Beatles' sound they were going for. The group even won a Drama Desk Award in May for Outstanding Revue.

Martin Scorsese's New George Harrison Documentary: Watch the Chill-Inducing Trailer

At the time I was stocking produce at Mana Foods, a small natural foods store in Paia, Maui. It was the best job I could find that would allow me to live as a broke twenty-something in an island paradise and still be able to spend as much time in the ocean as possible. Plus, there was plenty of free "bruised" fruit to be had, which was awful helpful at the time.George owned a 63-acre site in Nahiku, Maui, and apparently he had stopped in with his wife Olivia on the way through to town on Hana Highway. He looked frail but at ease, wearing a lightweight, flowing cotton Indian-inspired outfit, and he and his wife slowly made their way through the rather ridiculous selection of ripe island fruits, squeezing and smelling. George and Olivia seemed to be enjoying themselves, or at least the fruit.I was absolutely dumbstruck and covered in schmutz from hauling in leaky boxes of lettuce, so I didn't say a word. Once they had picked out their fruits, they went outside to a field and ate it on the grass in the sun. I couldn't believe it. It was like some vision of a blissed out George from the late 60's come to very real life in the late 90's, and I couldn't take my eyes off him.

John Lennon and Yoko Ono inspired bed-in protest to save ‘lifeline’ facility based at Lennon’s old Mossley Hill school

Young campaigners are to put on their pyjamas to recreate John Lennon and wife Yoko Ono’s famous bed-in protest – in a bid to save a “lifeline” facility based on the site of the Beatle’s former school.Children armed with teddy bears will join their families and a John and Yoko look-alike couple in a protest which organisers said showed they will not take the planned closure of Church and Mossley Hill children’s centre “lying down”.The centre based within the site of Dovedale Infants provides free support to parents of young children. It is one of four city children’s centres Liverpool council intend to close in a move the local authority blames on government cuts.

Meet the paperback writers taking part in Liverpool's first Mathew Street Literary Festival

There's a theory that if you want a bestseller, you just need to write a book about The Beatles. There’s certainly a huge appetite for books about the Fab Four, and this month International Beatle Week is hosting its first ever Mathew Street Literary Festival. It features talks with authors who have written about all aspects of The Beatles.“We always have a lot of authors who come to the Beatles convention,” says the festival’s musical director Jon Keats.“There have been so many books written about The Beatles, and there was always an element of The Beatles Convention which looked at showcasing the best Beatles authors.

John Lennon joke form expected to sell for £15,000

Former Beatle John Lennon described his occupation as ‘hazardus’ in a joke form he filled in months before his death. The singer made the prophetic entry on a Japanese landing card in 1980, the year he was shot dead in New York. The 40-year-old claimed his name was ‘blowjob’, his nationality ‘weird’ and his passport’s issuing authority was the ‘god of air’. The form, owned by a private collector, is expected to fetch £15,000 when it is sold online today by London-based auctioneer, the Fame Bureau. ‘Whether it was filled out on a trip to Japan or whether it was a document he and Yoko had knocking around following a previous visit is unclear,’ said auctioneer James Wilkinson.

How a summer night at Dodger Stadium turned 'nasty' for The Beatles and Bob Eubanks
Help! I need somebody! Help!"

If John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr weren't screaming those words aloud, they no doubt were thinking them as they sat trapped inside a Lincoln Continental that was smothered fender-to-fender by a frenzied blanket of screaming, crying, pawing, clawing fans who desperately wanted to touch their idols. It was Sunday night, Aug. 28, 1966, and The Beatles were trying to make a break for it after playing a 27-minute show for 45,000 people at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles. It was the first concert booked at the 4-year-old ballpark and, though no one knew it at the time, the second-to-last show The Beatles would ever perform. After another stadium gig the following night at San Francisco's Candlestick Park, their concert career was over.

In 1966, the Beatles brought a whole new ballgame to Dodger Stadium

Forty-five years ago, the band played before 45,000 screaming fans in Chavez Ravine. It lasted a half-hour, it was the next-to-last concert they ever played — but those who were there recall it vividly.Remember who was playing second base for the Dodgers 45 years ago Sunday? If you said John Lennon, you're close. All the Beatles played the infield that night, on a stage set up at second base, draped in blue and white, of course.Yes, Sunday is the 45th anniversary of the "bigger-than-Jesus" Beatles at Dodger Stadium, the first concert in the history of the gleaming 4-year-old ballpark. The third-place Dodgers were off playing the first-place Giants in San Francisco on the day "Nowhere Man" rang out across Chavez Ravine. The screaming, they say, could be heard all the way to Sunset Boulevard.

“John and Yoko” join protest against closure of Sure Start centre at dead Beatle’s former Liverpool school

John and Yoko lookalikes led a march to protest against the closure of a Sure Start centre at the school Lennon attended. The £1m state-of-the-art centre at the Dovedale School is set to close as Liverpool council tries to save £91m in the face of government budget cuts.Since the threat of closure was revealed in February this year, parents have staged a number of protests and won the support of Yoko Ono.This week scores of parents and local residents took to the streets of Mossley Hill to voice their opposition to the closure, with the John and Yoko lookalikes – in trademark white outfits – staged a ‘bed in’ protest like the one Lennon and his wife held at the Amsterdam Hilton in 1969.Yoko said: “I am delighted to support the ‘bed in’ event. It is very much in the peaceful spirit of John’s and my own bed in.

The artwork of John Lennon has been critically lauded and revered by fans and, from Friday through Sept. 4, the touring exhibit "Imagine Peace: The Artwork of John Lennon," presented by the musician's widow, Yoko Ono, will appear at the Unitarian Universalist Meeting House in Provincetown.Last year around this time, a similar Lennon exhibit was scheduled for the same place. But threats of a hurricane — Sound familiar? — caused its cancellation. This year's exhibit features more than 100 pieces from Lennon's early 20s in 1964 until his death in 1980, including four new releases shown in Provincetown for the first time. Many sketches were created during Lennon's time living at the landmark apartment building the Dakota in New York City with Ono and their young son, Sean. Often lighthearted, the work offers a glimpse into Lennon's world as a family man as well as a deeply spiritual soul. Like his music, there's beauty and a playfulness to many pieces. There are also visions of peace and hope for a better world. We spoke with Ono last year, when she offered insight into her husband from her home in New York.

Music Festival Becomes the Epicenter of Beatlemania on Labor Day Weekend

Just as the crowds gathered in Washington, D.C. in February of 1964 to see The Beatles® first live concert performance in America, thousands of people from all over the world will once again flock to Washington, D.C. to be a part of the largest Fab Four tribute festival in America – Abbey Road on the River. More than 50 bands will perform on eight stages, each with their own story and inspiration for being there. Some will be outfitted in black "Sullivan suits" and mop tops, others in colorful Sgt. Pepper coats. Festival producers will build an indoor display showcase that will take attendees on a walk back in time where they can see hundreds of historical and collectible items, including photographs taken during the band's prime, a new replica of the guitar played by George from Gretsch Guitars, and countless books documenting every step of the band's evolution. The musicians, historians, fans and fanatics, will all "come together" with one mission – to bring the magic of The Beatles® to life for five days during Labor Day weekend at the Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center.

How music affects John Lennon, you & me

'From King David to the long haired kids stocking the shelves at record stores, why do people find music so intoxicating ?' Music has always played a large role in my life. My mom jokes that before I could talk, I could spell thanks to the 70s hit "Saturday Night" by the Bay City Rollers - "S-A-T-U-R-D-A-Y... NIGHT!" I bonded with my babysitters over Beatles records. My wife is a musician, and her long blonde hair reminds me of my first memory of music. (Readers be warned: This will sound like I am ripping off Paul Simon lyrics. But this is actually my memory.) I was in my crib. "It was late in the evening. There was a radio coming from the room next door" and I heard my mom laughing. "I couldn't have been no more than 1 or 2..." as the song goes.

It was a beautiful evening at the Hollywood Bowl for the KCRW-sponsored tribute to Serge Gainsbourg curated by Beck. The all star line up included Ed Droste (Grizzly Bear), Victoria Legrand (Beach House), Mike Patton (Faith No More), Sean Lennon Charlotte Kemp Muhl (The Ghost Of A Saber Tooth Tiger), Zola Jesus, Lulu Gainsbourg, and up-and-coming rocker Joseph Gordon-Levitt all backed by Beck’s Sea Change era band.
