John Lennon's Quarrymen Cavern debut date questioned

John Lennon's debut at the famous Cavern Club was earlier than that listed by Beatles' historians, a former bandmate has claimed.Rod Davis, who played banjo alongside Lennon in The Quarrymen, says the date of 7 August, 1957 is incorrect.Mr Davis performed in the skiffle group at the club with Lennon, but was on holiday in France in early August 1957."No question about it, I played three or four times at The Cavern and it was definitely before August," he said." I have my dad's passport which says 'Entry to Boulogne 29 July, 1957', so I was definitely not there."

Liverpool Academy of Arts presents Beatles exhibition Back From the USSR (GALLERY)

It was 1968 when the Beatles sang ‘you don’t know how lucky you are boy, back in the USSR’. But being discovered listening to those lyrics would leave you very unlucky indeed if you lived in the old Soviet Union at the time. The Fab Four were deemed unsuitable for Soviet ears by the Kremlin (they were denounced as ‘capitalist pollution’ and Beatlemania as an ‘ugly manifestation of bourgeois culture’), and possession of their records could get you into big trouble. So much for all you need is love.Still, dedicated Soviet Beatles fans were undeterred and developed some ingenious ways of getting round the restrictions.

Yoko Ono says Japan should look to geothermal energy

Yoko Ono has an idea for her disaster-scarred country Japan—abandon nuclear energy for renewables and tap the geothermal energy beneath the unstable ground of the volcanic island nation. The artist and widow of John Lennon is in Japan for the first time since the March 11 quake and tsunami sparked a nuclear crisis, and as the country remembers the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. With her new exhibition, “The Road of Hope”, she says she wants to stress that Japan, having rebuilt itself after World War II and the atomic bombings, can also emerge stronger from the quake and Fukushima radiation disaster.

Yoko Ono knows what it’s like to have people second guess her work because of who she is. Many who are unfamiliar with her success in the art world before she married John Lennon assume she didn’t earn her avant-garde status. The same kind of people write off John’s ability as a visual artist.

Ring, ring. ‘Hello?’ ‘This is Yoko Ono speaking.’ (‘The Encounter’, Jan Mot, Brussels)
‘Oh my god, I can’t believe this’, the girl said, after she had put down that white phone. ‘I don’t even remember what she said. Something about buddhism and that she was in Tokyo and that she was sending us her love.’ Or what can happen if you walk into Jan Mot (Brussels) on a Saturday afternoon and the phone rings. Pick it up and you’ll have Yoko Ono on the other end of the line. Even the people at the gallery were slightly amazed: ‘This is actually the first time it rings.’ Yep, while most*galleries are closed for the summer, Jan Mot presents The Encounter*(through September 3, Tue-Sat, 2-8 (!) pm),a small show with just a couple of works, focusing on that element of encounter.

McCartney's magical understanding of music

Song has healing power as Maysles documentary of Beatle's New York tour post 9/11 attests Sir James Paul McCartney was momentarily lost in thought. And even though his thoughts were silent in the empty air of a satellite transmission from Cincinnati, where he would perform a concert later that evening, those thoughts took on an almost vibrant, visible quality.A writer from Postmedia News had just asked the former Beatle - an ardent, tireless supporter of charity benefit concerts and the most commercially successful songwriter in history, according to Guinness World Records - about the transformative, healing power of music, and why music can heal on a global scale following moments of tragedy in a way that politicians' speeches and the late-night comedy shows can't.

Where Cubans Can Meet the Beatles at Last
Havana Journal. Beatles’ lyrics line the walls of the Yellow Submarine

HAVANA — The hair and accents were wrong, but the audience cared about just one thing: the house band was singing the Beatles, here, in a new bar called the Yellow Submarine, in Cuba, where such an act might have led to arrests in the mid-1960s.People gather outside the Yellow Submarine in Havana.Better yet, perhaps because of that history, the band played like rebels. Fast and raw, they zipped up and down the bass lines of “Dear Prudence” as if the song were new. They raced through “Rocky Raccoon,” and when they reached the opening words of “Let It Be” — “When I find myself in times of trouble” — the entire crowd began singing along, swaying, staring at the band or belting out the chorus with their eyes closed in rapture.“If there’s no Beatles, there’s no rock ’n’ roll,” said Guille Vilar, a co-creator of the bar. “This is music created with authenticity.”

NEW YORK (TheWrap.com) - Piers Morgan has responded to countless allegations that he knew of, condoned or practiced phone hacking while editor of the Daily Mirror, but Monday night on Conan O’Brien he switched roles and became the accuser.Morgan accused Heather Mills, the ex-wife of Paul McCartney, of hacking her former husband, the same charge Mills has leveled against Morgan.“Paul McCartney is apparently now claiming someone hacked his phone,” Morgan told O’Brien. “I suspect it was Heather Mills because in the divorce, if you study the divorce papers, Paul McCartney accused Heather then of hacking into his phones and passing information to the papers.”

Well, playing a guitar on a stage erected near second base. Tashian wasn’t good enough at baseball to become one of the 127 second basemen in New York Mets history. Not that it was ever an ambition. He was a Dodgers fan. Also, he preferred music over hardball, and he stood on that infield stage at Shea in 1966 because he and his band, The Remains — a collective launched when the members were students at Boston University — were in the midst of a rock ’n’ roll tour.

Beatles fan gets tattoo of Sir Paul McCartney's autograph on her back
Beatles fan Maggie Muldoon Silverstein had her back autographed by Sir Paul McCartney and then rushed to a tattoo parlour to make it permanent.

Maggie Muldoon Silverstein got the singer to write ‘Let It Be, Paul McCartney’ after he called her on to the stage at a concert. The 24-year-old then phoned the tattoo shop to ask staff to keep it open so the words, made by a black marker pen, could be inked on. ‘It was all so surreal but incredible,’ said Mrs Muldoon Silverstein. ‘The minute we got out of the concert, we called the parlour and told them we were on our way. I didn’t want to wait and I certainly didn’t want to go home and lie on it and smudge it.’ Mrs Muldoon Silverstein and husband Matt had been sitting five rows from the front of the stage in Cincinnati, Ohio.

The story of the Beatles album, A Hard Day’s Night

The Beatles soundtrack album, A Hard Days Night, was produced as a companion to the film of the same name. (See my article entitled, The Making of a Classic: History of the Beatles film, A Hard Day’s Night) It was released in the UK July 10, 1964, just after the July 6 premier of the movie at London’s Pavilion Theater; it was released in the States on June 26, before the film came out on August 11.This was the Beatles’ third studio album, recorded at Abbey Road Studios in London. It included the film songs on side 1, with non-film songs on side 2. It was the first album to consist solely of Lennon/McCartney compositions (no cover songs), and showcased their blossoming songwriting ability and talent.

John Lennon art on show at new Scottish Beatles festival

HE SAW himself as the Statue of Liberty, and doodled a human foot and balloon faces blowing in the breeze. These remarkable sketches by John Lennon are to be shown for the first time in Scotland this weekend at a new festival dedicated to The Beatles. The 60 pieces of art, owned by Lennon's widow Yoko Ono, will be on display at the Queen's Hotel in Dundee as part of the first annual Scottish Beatles Weekend.

The festival, organised by Ross Nicoll from the Dundee Beatles tribute band Revolver, will see hundreds of Beatles enthusiasts arrive in the city to take part in a host of activities.

In addition to The Art of John Lennon exhibition, some of the best Beatles acts in Europe will perform in venues around the city over three days. Some 54 musicians in total will travel from France, Holland and Dublin, as well as Liverpool and Glasgow, to take part in the Dundee event.Mr Nicoll said: "To have the actual artwork of John Lennon himself, four of which have never been on display before, is a real honour and a privilege for our first year. "We were overjoyed to hear that Yoko Ono had given her blessing for them to come to Dundee and are extremely grateful to her and Jonathan Poole.

The story of Jesus, John Lennon, and a Beatles controversy in Chicago 45 years ago

On this August 11th in 1966, the Beatles were in Chicago to launch their third American tour. The British quartet was the most popular rock group in the world. So why was the discussion about religion? A few months before, John Lennon had been interviewed by a British magazine, and the subject of religion had come up. "Christianity will go, it will vanish and shrink," Lennon said. As for the Beatles, he went on, "We're more popular than Jesus now."

A look back at how Michael Jackson bought the Beatles

This week RBR takes a look at the money train of the music industry and the mysterious world of song royalties. This one sounds like an urban myth, but it’s true: Michael Jackson really did acquire the rights to most of the Beatles songs. It’s a strange and sordid tale, but it’s hard to feel too sorry for people who are worth hundreds of millions of dollars …In the early '60s, the Beatles were dismayed to find that they were paying up to 90% of their income in taxes, so they formed a company, Northern Songs, and went public on the London Stock Exchange in 1965. In 1969, the Beatles lost a buyout bid for control of the company to a group called ATV.Enter Jackson In 1984, ATV was put up for sale and Michael Jackson ended up out-bidding all other buyers and paid $47.5 million for the publishing rights to about 250 Beatles tunes, everything from “Eleanor Rigby” to “Revolution."

INSTRUCTION
Write Like the Beatles
Learn how the Fab Four borrowed from relative and parallel keys to create their unique chord progressions. With video.

As a collective of songwriters, the Beatles—Paul McCartney, John Lennon, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr—were nearly peerless. Each of them wrote unforgettable tunes that are still known and loved the world over, more than four decades since the band’s dissolution. And McCartney is still at it. For most fans of the Beatles, it’s the melodies of these songs that make them so special, but the Beatles were also deft at using novel chord progressions, and this part of their craft is sometimes overlooked. In particular, McCartney, Lennon, and Harrison had a knack for writing choruses and bridges that departed from the primary verse key of their songs, taking scenic harmonic detours that eventually led back home to the top of the next verse. It’s no easy thing to do, but they did it over and over again, without repeating themselves. There’s much to be learned from the unusual chord progressions in the Fab Four’s catalog, and that’s just what we’ll be doing in this month’s songwriting column. Before examining some of their tricks, however, we first need to understand what they were departing from.

Bed Peace Starring John Lennon & Yoko Ono

A quick fyi: Yoko Ono has posted on YouTube a 70 minute documentary that revisits John and Yoko’s famous 1969 Bed-Ins, which amounted to a peaceful protest against the Vietnam War. The film will remain online until midnight (New York time) on Sunday August 14th. Below the jump you can find Yoko’s letter to viewers and a summary of the film. Big H/T to @opedr

Dear Friends,
In 1969, John and I were so naïve to think that doing the Bed-In would help change the world.
Well, it might have. But at the time, we didn’t know.It was good that we filmed it, though.
The film is powerful now.
What we said then could have been said now.In fact, there are things that we said then in the film, which may give some encouragement and inspiration to the activists of today. Good luck to us all.Let’s remember WAR IS OVER if we want it.
It’s up to us, and nobody else.
John would have wanted to say that.

When the Greek fiddle and maker Anastasios Stathopoulos immigrated with his family to America, he couldn’t have imagined the role that the instrument company he started in Long Island City, Queens, would play in defining the amplified sounds of rock, country and jazz. After all, those great, distinctly American musical genres came into vogue in the decades after his death in 1915. Nor could he have foreseen the empire or the legacy that his son Epaminondas – also known as “Epi” – would begin building using the House of Stathopoulos shop as a foundation, evolving from building popular mandolins and banjos to electric jazz guitars.Today the Epiphone brand, under the Gibson company umbrella, still builds many of the classic models that helped shape the sound of American music, albeit occasionally in the hands of British musicians. To illuminate some of the Epiphone legacy, here is a look at some epic Epiphone models, paired with some of their most outstanding musical exemplars : Casino,George Harrison, John Lennon and Paul McCartney made this legendary hollow body famous while all three were Beatles. With a rich, bold tone and a versatile nature, the Casino served Lennon from Revolver through his solo years, including the Plastic Ono Band’s Live Peace in Toronto. Nonetheless, Beatles bassist McCartney was the first Beatle to acquire a Casino, buying a 1962 model four years after it was built.

Yoko Ono's music hits the club dance floor

In December 2010, Yoko Ono was honored for a whopping five consecutive No. 1s on the Billboard Dance Club Songs chart. With her single "Talking to the Universe" currently a hit on the same chart, the iconoclastic veteran artist took time out to chat about the DJ community's affinity for her music, sharing a stage with Lady Gaga, Twitter and her continuing work protecting and curating her late husband John Lennon's music and legacy."Talking to the Universe" is vying to be your next hit on Billboard's Dance/Club Play chart. You already have a slew of No. 1s on that chart. Were you surprised when your music was embraced by the DJ community? How has that, in turn, influenced how you make music ?

Bed Peace Starring John Lennon & Yoko Ono

Yoko Ono Lennon has posted on YouTube a 70 minute documentary that revisits John and Yoko’s famous 1969 Bed-Ins, which amounted to a peaceful protest against the Vietnam War. The film will remain online until midnight (New York time) on Sunday August 14th. Below the jump you can find Yoko’s letter to viewers and a summary of the film.

Love, Yoko

Get Back! — music fans plead for Scottish Beatles Weekend to become annual event

The first Scottish Beatles Weekend held in Dundee has been hailed an "overwhelming success" despite the late cancellation of the event's biggest name band.Hundreds of people had poured into Fat Sam's on Saturday afternoon for a full day and night of live music, featuring 14 bands from across Britain and Europe — including Dundee stars The View. However the four Dryburgh boys, who were looking forward to playing an acoustic set of Beatles songs on the main stage, were forced to pull out after lead singer Kyle Falconer contracted laryngitis.Their non-appearance failed to put a damper on the occasion though, as Dundee "super group" the Anderson, Webster, McGinty, Ward and Fisher Band came to the rescue and filled the vacant slot at a couple of hours' notice.Telling the audience they were neither The View nor The Beatles, they were given a tremendous ovation from around 700 impressed fans in Fat Sam's Live!

History and background of Apple Jam, Beatles tribute band from Seattle

August 15, 2011 -Apple Jam, popular Beatles tribute band from Seattle, Washington, has been performing Beatles hits in Seattle as well as around the world, since 2005. Starting out as a combo of musicians made up of various bands, the group was formed to pay tribute to John Lennon for the 25th anniversary of his death. After their 2006 tribute to George Harrison for the 5th anniversary of his death, their popularity had grown in the community to such an extent that they reconvened on a more permanent basis and called themselves Apple Jam. They produced a CD of early Beatles compositions in 2009 and were invited to International Beatles Week that year. They have done two Paul McCartney tributes to date, and other Beatles shows as well. They have performed at popular clubs in Seattle, primarily the Crocodile, Neumos, and the Triple Door.
