These riots are absolutely insane. I've been streaming BBC all morning.

Last night the riots were literally just up the road from where I was. We had to rush back to the dorms in Greenwich before it spread to our area. Riots broke out in Lewisham yesterday, too, and I was just there the day before. It's all happening very close to me. . . I hope it ends soon. The fact that it's spreading around the country though doesn't make a quick end seem very likely.

There was an absolutely awful youtube video floating around showing a crowd of 200ish vs 8 riot police, just running at them and flinging ****. I hope everyone who lives near where this stuff is going down is gonna be okay, it doesn't look like it's gonna end anytime soon

and all the twitter rumours aren't helping.

It's hit manchester now. People are tweeting that The Arndale Centre, the main mall in the city centre, has been broken into and looted and there are various shops on fire. I'm about 14 miles away in the countryside so I am safe but there are too many people that I know who live there.

The news has just said "hundreds of people are rioting down market street in Manchester".

Truly frightening, though here across the pond I have the luxury (at least for now) of being more angry than scared. As we all know, if this stuff can happen in the UK, it can happen anywhere.
It's being reported that hundreds have been arrested. Will many of them get more than a slap on the wrist?
I hope this violence dies down ASAP & the law-abiding citizens can go out in their neighborhoods in peace. The things we take for granted in life...

Doubt it. Problem is if the police what I think they should do and run in, guns blazing and blow the rioters' brains out people would whine about it, and when they're just trying to arrest everyone and throw them in prison like they are now, people whine. They can't win

Huge respect to the large mass of youths patrolling London to defend against the rioting crowds and make citizens arrests. Extremely brave of each and every one of them. Makes me somewhat ashamed of my plan to hide out in my bedroom if they make it to Bradford.

Because these copycat riots have spread so rapidly from city to city across England, I am just hoping that they are contained here and do not start to leap from country to country!

To put things into perspective, although this is terrifying and devastating for people living in and around our big cities, if the majority of us here in England didn't turn on our radios and TVs we would know nothing about this. It is only going on (so far) in a few pockets of the major cities.

Apparently there was trouble in Shipley as well last night, which is only a stones throw from me :s I'm hoping it was just a minor football skirmish and not anything riot related.
