What it says about the flying dreams I have is pretty spot on:

I often have dreams of flying (which are always pleasant), yet as the dream progresses, it becomes harder and harder for me to get off the ground/maintain flight. Apparently this signifies a loss of control in your life, which is pretty true for me at the moment.

I have a recurring dream that my teeth just crumble in my mouth. It is recurring as well and progressive as in, "Ahh, this time I've lost more". On the other side of the coin I also have flying dreams occasionally. Those are much more fun.

Does anyone seriously feel like they have control over their life? If so, what percentage do you feel is in your control? If you don't mind sharing. I know I am more in control of mine than I think but I don't "feel" like I am. Getting there.

Likewise. So is it scary you can't come down? I wonder if being unable to land means the same thing as being unable to fly? IE: You don't have the control over your life you'd like.

I would argue most people (especially given the financial shape of the world currently) wish for more power & control over their lives. That's a pretty common sentiment, you're absolutely right. I do know some people who would honestly answer that they have full control over their lives, and they'd be correct in saying so. The list would be far longer of people wishing for more control, though.

id call it more of an annoyance really. like 'woah wait a minute, i want to go there and see that!' but my dream takes me elsewhere. I take it as a sign to I need to slow down, smell the roses.

I'd say I got control of about 50% of it. The rest is a gamble. heh...

I do, mostly. There are times (usually when my work/home life feels out of balance) when I feel less in control, but overall I feel like I have a good grasp right now. It took SO long to get here and there were many disappointments, traumas and lessons learned along the way. Feeling in control probably (at this point) comes from my really high self confidence in my ability to do pretty much anything I set my mind to. Does that make sense?

It's funny how people view therapists. Today, one of the intake specialists at work became SO shocked to hear why my teeth are so messed up. She could not believe that I had ever been poor, on my own at 17, etc. I guess I have finally come to "make it" part of the "fake it til you make it" school of life.

I have this exact same dream a lot - even during periods when I'm not going to be flying.

This dream gets more and more often if I have a flight booked.

I am pretty sure the reason for me is my terror of flying - I actually don't want the plane to take off, I prefer it trundling along the road!

I have just noticed this is post no. 777 for me - isn't this an aircraft? In the words of LB "isn't that weird?"

I think I'm about the same as you here, 50/50. I do feel like I'm on the verge of tipping the scales toward more control. Financially and career-wise I am there with the exception of debt. Personally, things need some work. I'm not doing poorly there either but I'd really like things to be better than just "fair" in the area of close friends and family. I still let too much garbage in. It's gotten much better though.

So do I, Jannie. And they don't want to hear it!

Yes it does, especially as girls and young women we spend way too much time trying to please others and neglect ourselves. However it is the relationship we have with ourselves that gives us the most happiness which in turn makes us more present and effective with others. Having a sense of self-efficacy is key.

Self-made people may make the best therapists. You've been there and done that. Kudos to you for rising above it all. You're an inspiration.

I once had a psychic tell me, "You are self made." It really hit home because she was absolutely right but I'd never given myself enough credit for it. I certainly didn't get where I am because I had supportive and loving parents, although I realize now that they did the best they could and what that really means.

This is key, in my opinion. I still let some garbage in. However, I notice that when I do, I feel like sh*t. It can be something as simple as engaging with a toxic relative on Facebook- as soon as I give in to it and let it in, I regret it. Which is good, right?! I mean good that it feels bad. There may have been a time when it felt comfortable.

We can create our own norms and decide what makes us comfortable. Looking at core beliefs, challenging them and then making the decision to think about things differently is very powerful (but certainly not easy).

I have that dream too. It's creepy as hell.

I feel like I'm pretty much in control of my life - I feel content & happy & try to surround myself with good people. I have a good stable job & am not in debt except for my home. My family life is good.

I don't know if I could quantify it with a percentage though. Also, there are things that I would like to control (mainly other people & their actions ) but obviously I can't, so I'm always working on accepting that.
