Someone told me that the song was written as a joke sort of. To see if a song could be a hit with words that made absolutely no sense, if the tune was good. Not sure if this is totally true though.

I had to do a research paper in I believe the spring semester of 2004 about Rhetoric and Culture, and I decided to do it on the struggle of rock music vs. the more conservative culture of the US. I read a good chunk of a book, can't remember the name, but it's by Bob Larson who apparently used to work in the music industry in the 60's (or 50's, possibly 70's...been too long).
Anyway, of all things, the one thing I remember him saying is that he wrote all these songs with poignant lyrics, and the record companies kept rejecting them, so he wrote this absolutely nonsensical song that the record companies ate up. I don't think it ever came into fruition, but I thought it was funny.
