Exactly. She did it nightly for a while and now she's NEVER doing it. She's gotta find a balance, I think.

I have dreamed of screaming just that to several people throughout my life. Especially the "was I just a fool?" part. Honestly, those might just be the most profound 4 lines Stevie's ever written:
"Time cast a spell on you...but you won't forget me...
(Was I just a fool)
I know I could've loved you, but you would not let me..
(Give me just a chance)
I'll follow you down 'til the sound of my voice will haunt you..
You'll never get away from the sound of the woman that loves you..
(never get away, never get away)"
When I listen to or watch performances of SS sometimes I fast-forward to this part because it hits home soooo badly.

I do miss seeing that much emotion in Stevie. Drugs or no drugs, it could not be possible to sing the same songs over and over and bring forth such unrestrained expressiveness. Frankly, I can't imagine how she does it after all these years. But back in the day, she meant that **** when she was singing it.
That version is just the best to me. Always will be. It's songs like BATB and performances like that that make me love Stevie. It has such a ring of truth to it that - and y'all know I love the lady, so don't nobody start with the yellin' unless you want to yell about that excellent grammar right there - I don't think she's always able to infuse into the songs she means to be "heartfelt." It's not her trying to be a poet or trying to be esoteric or trying to be all mystic like she sometimes does. It's just her singing about a relationship that just can't work in a way we can all identify with.

ETA due to over-analyzing ahoy because it's 3 AM and my brain won't shut up at such an hour: For example, the "Or at least...I'm trying to change" bit. THAT IS AMAZING. I gained some added understanding of that, that really hit home during the failure of my last relationship - the guy was a good guy, a great guy even, but he needed things from me that I'm just not built to provide. I TRIED to do it for him, because I wanted him to be happy. I TRIED to change. Really hard. But I didn't do it fast enough/well enough to meet what he needed because we were from "different worlds," and so we didn't work out - not because he was a bad guy or his wants were particularly unreasonable, but because they just weren't me. So to me, Stevie sings "I never doubted your beauty...I've changed" so forcefully, because she wants to be able to say "Look! I did it! I did this for you because you are worth it to me!" But you can't change a fundamental personality trait overnight, if at all, no matter how much you might want to at the time, can you? So she has to add, in a quieter, almost spoken manner, as if she's hoping he won't hear it or notice it because it's not part of the main message, "Well, I mean, I'm TRYING to do this for you. You can see that, right? Why can't that be enough?"

Brilliant.

If it does, I've never seen it - I wish it did! I do appreciate that during the most powerful moments of the BATB performance, they managed to restrain themselves from sticking in those fake close-up shots & messing it up, though.

All the same, baby. All the same.

Rhiannon from the HBO Special seems pretty emotional.
If she's not acting of course.

Agree, you really had to be there to feel the emotion coming from this song that night! And still all we have is that small clip? I relly want to see the whole song!

So sad
And I'm pretty sure she sings at one point, "I'm still afraid of changing because I built my live around her." Ouch.

Here's the audio for those who haven't heard it:

Agreed. Remember the early 80's MTV interview where the interviewer told her the story of interviewing Pat Benatar and Pat said that someone had said to her "you don't really think they're (the fans) coming here to hear you sing, do you?" At which point the interviewer asked Stevie if anyone had ever said that to her and Stevie, very guardedly said, "noone ever said anything like to me because I was very protected" (by FM). You could feel the vulnerability and self-consciousness just oozing out of her. That whole interview was so candid and Stevie's emotions were so nakedly exposed. I felt like a voyeur watching that interview. It's not a performance per say, but that interview was very emotional to me.

As far as most emotional performances go, I would say, and I'm sure someone has already said this, but at the US festival after Edge when Stevie said with tears in her eyes something like, "if you ever feel like you don't matter just remember, you are the ONLY thing that matters to me."

P.S. Stevie can call me her sweet darlin' any day.
Agreed. For me, that Dreams is simply perfection and unbeateable! Can you imagine if she started singing it like that again, with the sweet darlin' part? I would go nuts!!! Well, more nuts than I already am.

Not on stage but Midnight Wind with John Stewart is my favourite emotional and overall Stevie performance, towards the end it gets like a more restrained live Rhiannon... amazing stuff, goosebump alert!
