Fleetwood Mac – Second Hand News 1978

At the end of the rumours tour…Largo 1978 With christine on drums! Stevie: “Lindsey is one strong man” LOLOL In the recently produced “Classic Albums” showcase revolving around the making of the album Rumours, Lindsey Buckingham states that “‘Second Hand News’ was considered to be the front-runner for the opening track on Rumours, and in doing so, keeping with the pop element since it was a pop album.” Aside from being a classic pop song, it is no accident that “Second Hand News” found its place as the first song on Rumours. It is this song that sets the stage for the mood that surrounds Rumours, an album that was created around feelings of hope and heartbreak, resignation and love. Although the uplifting music of “Second Hand News” traps the listener into a world of make-believe happiness, by the end of the song, Lindsey’s painful lyrics and emotional guitar solo transcend the song to the silent emptiness that precedes the next chapter of dreams lost to a world of loneliness. Lindsey says that the uplifting dance music of “Second Hand News” consists of “Scottish-Irish-Folk” influences and to get this effect, he opted for more of a dance beat. While creating this song, he had heard “Jive Talking” by the Bee Gees and “pulled a couple of textures from that.” Where initially, there was going to be a guitar solo, Lindsey felt that the “presence would be better served with the use of a vocal,” thus creating the “bam’s,” as the vocal part, reinforced by the guitar to give it …

Free Energy, of Philadelphia, has delivered my favorite album of the first part of 2010. Stuck on Nothing is a fantastic collection of 70's power pop and glam rock. They were kind enough to sit down and answer some questions for us.

It’s great to see a band that is doing well but not from Brooklyn. We hear that you're from Philadelphia and we love the City of Brotherly Love. How is the music scene there? How has the city and music scene contributed to your music and success?

How can people be in bands in Brooklyn? Maybe they're rich? We are from Minnesota and other places but the band was formed and lives in Philly. We have many friends in the scene but our band isn't super involved. I would say the friendly people of Philly have helped us a lot.

What musician/band would you love to open for?

Lindsey Buckingham/Fleetwood Mac. La dusseldorf.

Nice review of Tusk. The only mistake in the article is the release date, which is listed here as 1990.

Patrick here again. Time to spread the appreciation around a bit. Let’s talk Mick.

It’s no exaggeration to say that if not for Mick Fleetwood’s influence, my repertoire of drum fills and my overall approach to drumming would be greatly compromised. In my estimation, Mick’s one of the most underrated time-keepers in rock. He’s a master of tasty flourishes like the lick into the chorus of “Dreams.” That’s a million-dollar drum fill, right there. It’s so classy and distinguished, I’ll betcha he plays it with his pinky in the air.

Mick’s pocket is also deep, strong, and instantly recognizable. Doesn’t matter if he’s hypnotizing you with a kick drum and cowbell (“Gold Dust Woman”) or locking in with his life partner in rhythm John McVie to play a straight-four (“Gypsy”) - you know it’s Mick right away.

Needless to say when I had the chance to interview Mick for a Modern Drummer cover story last spring, excerpts of which you can find right here, I was over the moon with excitement.

We spoke on two occasions as he was being shuttled to rehearsals for Fleetwood Mac’s “Unleashed” tour. He was a very pleasant fellow and had a total recall memory on most of the details. Except when we got to talking about the making of Tusk. “I’ll have to get back to you on that, Patrick,” he said.

Sure enough, next time we spoke, he had detailed recollections of Lindsey playing on tissue boxes and “sharing a reefer” with Lindsey on his front lawn imploring him to not go too overboard with weirdness on Tusk.

Luckily, he ignored Mick’s request.

Hope you enjoy reading this as much as I enjoyed doing it.

Why did Mick have to get back on him? He instantly recalled everything except Tusk?? What did he do to refresh his memory? I mean, I've heard Mick talk a lot about Tusk, so I know he remembers. I don't really understand why he said he had to get back to him. Unless, he just had something else to do that first day.

My Fleetwood Mac perspective has changed

Picture the scene: Younger, punk brother knocking on older sister’s bedroom door, Fleetwood Mac’s Rumours playing in the background. Back in the day this album seemed to be in every young adult’s collection.

Younger, punk brother says through the locked door, “Whatcha doing? Wanna play Monopoly?”

Older sister says in a burdened tone, “Please go away. I’m busy.”

Yes, I was that younger, punk brother.

For most of my life, if I thought of Fleetwood Mac, I would think of my older sister and her Rumours album. I also equated Fleetwood Mac to the throaty vocals of Stevie Nicks and the hipster guitarist work of Lindsey Buckingham.

I guess I always liked Fleetwood Mac, but they weren’t one of my favorite bands when I was younger.

Sometime last year, I decided to add Fleetwood Mac’s Greatest Hits to my jogging music rotation. Over the last six months or so, I’ve listened to their tunes more than any other band’s work while jogging.

After all that listening, I’m struck with three realizations. First, I really like their sound, more so than I did when I was younger. Second, I never grasped how drum-centric their band was. Mick Fleetwood really did some excellent work. Third, I’m drawn more to Christine McVie’s vocals than to Stevie Nicks’ tortured rasp.

That's it. Not much of a music flashback here, just an observation on how tastes and perspectives change as we age.
