From the SF Examiner. I didn't know she is 37! She looks good.
http://www.examiner.com/printa-37508...the_Storm.html Dan Apczynski, The Examiner Nov 2, 2006 2:00 AM (7 hrs ago) Current rank: # 63 of 6,420 articles SAN FRANCISCO - ‘Rock Star’ contestant returns for one-night show If the music industry was populated primarily by statuesque, live-wire, foul-mouthed female rock sirens, with roaring vocals and a stage presence intense enough to leave its impression on your retinas long after you’ve looked away, then Storm Large would be any other musician. As it is, though, the six-foot tall breakout star from CBS’ reality-music competition, “Rockstar: Supernova,” is sort of an anomaly. Originally from the East Coast, Large (Storm Large is her real name) landed in San Francisco to begin her music career. “I have really sweet memories,” she said. “[San Francisco] was where I began playing in bands and performing live so it feels like my alma mater. I come back and it’s like visiting the halls of where I was educated.” If that’s the case, then she has certainly put her study time to good use. With an already-powerful career as an independent musician, national TV exposure and a highly anticipated single featuring “Supernova” host Dave Navarro due out this week, the momentum she has generated promises to make her among the most successful of her graduating class. And it’s no wonder — Large’s live show is a mix of white-hot sexual energy, soaring musical commitment and a vocal performance so ferocious as to conjure comparisons to the great give-everything vocalists in rock history. Although, if you believe her side of the story, she’s something different altogether. “I’m a blue-collar, straight-up, working musician,” she said. “No matter what kind of fancy television show, I’m a blue-collar, punk-rock musician.” Despite the humble attitude, Large maintains the kind of rabid fan base that many major-label acts aspire to, and rarely achieve. And yet, to hear her talk about it, it seems as though major-label success isn’t even a part of the plan. “It’s not very commercially viable to speak your mind and be very opinionated, and be 37, and yet be sexual, but I think it’s changing,” she said. “People are like, ‘I want to see a real woman, and I want to hear what she has to say.’ I guarantee there is no shortage of women like me, but you won’t hear them on the radio and you won’t see them on VH1.” Concert Preview Storm Large When: Today at 8 p.m. Where: Red Devil Lounge, 1695 Polk St., San Francisco Price: Tickets are $15 Info: Call (415) 921-1695 or visit www.reddevillounge.com Examiner |
