The Beatles develop their own look for the first time

In October 1960, a German student took five young Britons to a Hamburg fairground for a photoshoot. Astrid Kirchherr had only just met the Beatles through her friend Klaus Voormann. She was determined to find common ground through the language barrier. Many of the negatives are now lost but one group shot remains: caught in a grid of metal, the Beatles stand and sit in a line. Dressed in leather, jeans and boots, they could be a street gang, were it not for the sharp intelligence of their faces. They're not sleazy deadbeats but existentialist heroes.

Expect Martin Scorsese's George Harrison documentary this year — Olivia Harrison

A documentary on the life of George Harrison directed by Martin Scorsese is nearly done and is expected to premiere this year, Harrison’s widow, Olivia Harrison said this week.“I assume we’re going to announce it sometime soon, the actual [premiere] date, but it will be this year,” she said Thursday in Las Vegas, where she had attended the fifth-anniversary performance of the Beatles-Cirque du Soleil show “Love” along with their son, Dhani, and Paul McCartney, Yoko Ono, Sean Ono Lennon and longtime Beatles producer George Martin and his son Giles, who co-produced the “Love” soundtrack.

Bid on Lennon Gold Coin
June 2011
When listening to the song “When I’m 64” in 1967, what fan of the Beatles tune would have thought that 44 years later, when he may actually be 64, he would have the chance to bid on a unique gold John Lennon coin struck by the British Royal Mint ? The piece goes on the block June 29 in a Bonhams auction in London. The coin was specially created by the BRM for Yoko Ono, Lennon’s widow, to honor her late husband. He was selected in an online poll from a field of six individuals from Great Britain’s past to be depicted on a £5 silver coin of the English Channel Island of Alderney. The regular issue is from the Great Britons series. It was issued in 2010 on Lennon’s 70th birthday.

HERE COME THE (LOOKALIKE BEATLES) SONS

EXTRAORDINARY pictures of the sons of Beatles John Lennon and George Harrison make 40 years seem like Yesterday.Sean Lennon, 35 is the spitting image of his famous father in spectacles and a suit – even sporting the same scruffy facial hair.Meanwhile on the right, musician Dhani Harrison, 32, could easily pass as his guitarist father, with the same long, glossy locks and a slight moustache and goatee.

Las Vegas Weekly
June 11, 2011

The word “surreal” gets thrown around too often these days, but sitting a few feet from Yoko Ono as she watched Paul McCartney’s Friday night MGM Grand Garden Arena concert was nothing if not that. She mostly sat—next to son Sean Lennon—and watched from behind her sunglasses, but the famous “Hey Jude” “Na na na na” coda got her singing.

Yoko Ono, Sean Lennon and Olivia Harrison delight Beatles fans with singalong at Paul McCartney show

The hit-laden, career-spanning performance kept much of the packed crown on its feet through the nearly three-hour set, but moved into historic milestone territory late in the show as video cameras captured Yoko Ono, Sean Lennon and Olivia Harrison leading the sing-along of John Lennon's "Give Peace A Chance" from their seat just off the side of the stage.

Newly published Beatles photos revealed in London

Fifty unpublished photos of The Beatles at their first US concert in 1964 went on show in London on Friday ahead of an auction in New York, offering an intimate glimpse of the band just as they hit the big time. The black and white shots were taken by photographer Mike Mitchell, who was just 18 years old when the Fab Four, themselves little older, came to his home town of Washington, and presented him with the opportunity of a lifetime.

Five Life Lessons From John Lennon's "Lost Weekend"

Rocks Off would like to wish a very happy 70th birthday to one of the coolest pop cats out there, Harry Nilsson. Four times out of five, whenever we play the jukebox at Warren's, we put on something from his Greatest Hits - like Martin Scorsese, we usually leave the lime in the coconut and jump into the fire, but you can't really go wrong with "Without You," "One" or "I Guess the Lord Must Live In New York City" either. This is an especially remarkable milestone for Nilsson, considering his somewhat legendary taste for the good life. He was a survivor and, some would say, the chief enabler of good friend John Lennon's "lost weekend," the period when the former Beatle separated from Yoko Ono and relocated to Los Angeles with his personal assistant/paramour May Pang.

Paul McCartney Places Beatles Breakup Squarely on John Lennon

While Morrissey has come out swinging against the Queen of England, calling her the "ultimate dictator," Sir Paul McCartney has a different issue to take up with her Royal Highness -- he thinks his fellow bandmate in the Beatles, Ringo Starr, should be knighted. While all four Beatles enjoy MBE status (Member of the Order of the British Empire), only McCartney was knighted in a ceremony that took place in 1997. Speaking to Geoff Lloyd on Absolute Radio this week, McCartney joked that he would like to poke his head in the Queen's quarters and suggest that the only other living Beatle receive the same honor.Perhaps more significantly, NME reports that during the same interview, McCartney placed the blame for the Beatles' breakup squarely on John Lennon. "Basically me, George [Harrison] and Ringo said, 'Does this have to be final? Could we do a couple of gigs or can we think about this tomorrow?' But John was off with Yoko [Ono] and he was saying 'No, no, it's great -- I feel a release,' and all that. So that was kind of final."

Ringo Starr, everybody’s second favourite Beatle, finally took to a stage in Poland when he played the Congress Hall in the centre of Warsaw last night. The Liverpudlian legend appeared, shades intact, and proceeded to treat his Polish fans to a two-hour banquet of tracks, old and new.The former Beatles drummer and singer of such Fab Four hits as Yellow Submarine and Octopus's Garden, performed in Warsaw with his longstanding All-Starr Band.

So, either Paul was quoted out of context or he's really stretching for some news to promote his tour. This is so OLD and we all know John was responsible for breaking up the Beatles because it was HIS band to begin with, lol! But George was, I believe, ready to go in his own direction and All Things Must Pass is a great indication of that. I don't care for Paul rehashing stuff from Beatles history where key players aren't here to have their say. It's one of my biggest pet peeves with Paul McCartney in general.

Play inspired by cystic fibrosis and...John Lennon

John Lennon and Me, and cystic fibrosis too.Notre Dame play explores difficult subject of youth and terminal illness.CARLETON PLACE – Most young people believe themselves to be invincible.Young people with cystic fibrosis know all too well that they likely won’t live beyond the age of 25.

Reconciling the youthful zest for live with the grim spectre of an all-too-soon death proved to be the making of a touching performance looking at young people with cystic fibrosis on the stage of Notre Dame Catholic High School last week.

“If you take a straw and just put it in your mouth, and plug your nose, and try to breathe, that’s what it’s like to breathe with cystic fibrosis,” said Joe Gallagher, the play’s director and a Notre Dame teacher. “It’s an incredibly tough disease. Most people with it die before they’re 25,” he said during last Friday’s performance before the Grade 7 and 8 classes on the cafeteria’s stage.

The play, John Lennon and Me, a reference to the lead character’s fanatical devotion to the Beatles star, also had two evening performances on June 1 and 2, with all of the proceeds going towards cystic fibrosis research. Gallagher told the students that he had met a young person with the disease, which inspired him to mount this production.
