Students appeal to identify original plants that grew in John Lennon’s Garden
History students at the Students appeal to identify the original plants that grew in John Lennon’s Liverpool garden in 1957 on Menlove AveUniversity of Chester are appealing for help in identifying plants that could have grown in John Lennon’s childhood home as part of a major research project.

The group of seven students is working on a research project to gather information which can be used in the future to recreate the authenticity of the garden at Mendips in Liverpool with the assistance of the National Trust, which looks after the property. The house is a mecca for Beatles’ fans and while the building itself is contemporary to the 1950s when John Lennon and his Aunt Mimi lived there, the garden contains modern plants.

How utterly fascinating. I wonder how they would go about their research for this.

Default 4 New Beatles News Updates

It is fascinating Nico.I would think the have to try to talk to relatives of Aunt Mimi, that are still alive.Or relatives of John still living in England and talk to others to see if they remember what flowers and plants she had growing in her yard.Maybe they will try to find photographs of the yard to.Even talk to friends that remember what plants were growing in the garden. When John was growing up there.
I have few more updates for tonight.

Interview: Sir Peter Blake

Sir Peter Blake doesn’t believe that he owns the title “The Godfather of British Pop Art” alone – he shares it with fellow Beatles album-linked artist Richard Hamilton. Despite his success, this iconic artist, who will forever be linked with Fab Four mythology, and who’s turning 80 next year, remains a modest, down to earth man who’s never forgotten his humble origins, which saw him begin his artistic career by accident.

An Angry Letter To The NY Times From John Lennon, Just Because

Here's one of those things that makes you realize that the Internet was created for us to trade notable ephemera: A website called Letters of Note published an angry handwritten note from John Lennon to the New York Times after the Times' Craig McGregor wrote a piece called "The Beatles Betrayal" that said that The Beatles stole music from black acts, and got rich doing it. Lennon's rebuttal is angry, but maybe sort of off the point?:

Brian Wilson says 'Pet Sounds' isn't as good as 'The Beatles' 'Rubber Soul'.

Brian Wilson has said that he believes that The Beach Boys' classic 1966 album 'Pet Sounds' is not as good as The Beatles' 1965 effort 'Rubber Soul'.

Speaking in The Sun, Wilson said he also thinks the best album he has composed is 'Smile', which was eventually released in 2004 despite Wilson beginning to compose it all the way back in 1966.

I'm back from Abbey Road On The River!!!!! We had a blast. The bands 1964, Revolver, Britbeat, and All You Need Is Love were FANTASTIC!!!! I adore the set-lists and the "John" in both 1964 and Britbeat were phenomenal.

Plus, greatest of all was the "Love" show- a complete live showcase of the "Love" album- Cirque du Solei style. Omg!!!!

MsLinds, 3rd World Man...it was amazing!

A Beginner’s Guide to Paul McCartney

By now, you know the ballad of Paul McCartney: Beatles, death conspiracy, Wings, “The Girl Is Mine”, divorces, knighthood, etc. Our Beginner’s Guides intend to inform readers of an artist’s background and context, but in this instance that function is futile. We also try to avoid bold statements about an artist’s catalog. In this case, we’ll abandon that ideal like a peg-legged ex-wife. The be-all-end-all of Paul McCartney’s solo career, the singular work which defines the musician, is his 1976 jam “Silly Love Songs.”

UK Beatles tour book now available in the US and Canada

A book concentrating on the six UK tours of The Beatles, released last month in Britain, is now available in the USA and Canada.Beatlemania! The Real Story Of The Beatles UK Tours 1963-1965, published by Omnibus Press, brings those fascinating early tours to life through the eyes of a host of eye witnesses.Author Martin Creasy has tracked down 21 pop stars and the lone surviving compere from the tours, plus police who were on duty, music writers and regional reporters and photographers, cinema staff, technicians and hoteliers to tell the real story of what happened when The Beatles exploded in Britain... and there is even the hotelier's daughter who gave up her bed for a Beatle!
Perhaps best of all there are fans who were there to recall just what impact The Beatles had when they played their hearts out at theaters in their local high street.

Beatlemania! The Real Story Of The Beatles UK Tours 1963-1965 is now available from all good bookshops and the usual internet sites.

Linda McCartney: An eye for Paul, and more

A new book features images from her days as a rock 'n' roll photographer — and beyond.
Linda McCartney may have married a Beatle, but it was the Rolling Stones who gave the budding photographer her big break. It was 1966, while working as a receptionist in Manhattan, that Linda Eastman, as she was known then, wangled her way aboard a yacht on the Hudson River, a publicity event for the Stones. Soon she was embedded in the late-'60s rock 'n' roll scene, photographing her future husband, Paul McCartney, at a "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" album launch party in 1967.

This Month in Music History: The Greatest Album Ever Made makes its debut

By Lee ZimmermanWhen it was released on June 1, 1967, Sgt. Pepper (full name: Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band) became the high mark of the Beatles’ trajectory up until that point. Yet, Sgt. Pepper marked more than a musical shift. It was the culmination of a cultural transformation that had begun only a few short years before, one that purposely redefined the band entirely.

Exclusive Video: The Making of “Coming Up,” from the New Paul McCartney Reissue

Paul McCartney, who turns 68 in two weeks, has been a rock star for half a century, a period in the public eye roughly equal to Duke Ellington’s or Louis Armstrong’s, human monuments both, and approaching the six decades Frank Sinatra, undisputed king of the 20th century, spent knocking audiences dead. A quick Google search reveals that McCartney has been a certified “living legend” for even longer than the average Afghani can expect to live, period. How’s that for specious perspective?

Ugh, I do NOT agree Pepper is the "greatest album ever made." That is such...bollocks to me. I mean, it's a great album but it isn't perfect. I think the imagery on the album, the time period it was released in, and just the whole era it symbolized has much to do with the status it was given, but in my opinion Pepper isn't even the best Beatles album.

That would have to be...*drum roll* a 3-way tie:

Revolver, The White Album, and Abbey Road.

But Rubber Soul is nipping at the butts and may join the above as the 4th contender in this tie. I simply don't rate Pepper in the category of the above albums, though A Day In The Life is a magnificent, epic masterpiece...ugh, John's voice on that song= perfection/can't be touched/better than your faves/your faves couldn't even if they wanted to.
