Reading blogs and watching interviews will be among my duties, so for once I won't have to consider the hours I already devote to these activities as time wasted. It also just seems like such a fun environment--their office was so much more vibrant than any other I interviewed in.
I've been so stressed with midterms and next year's housing, and now that's all melted away. I've already flipped out to my family and friends, and have now moved on to spreading it about the web, apparently.
Congrats! That sounds like an incredible opportunity to do something you're really interested in.

My roommate's best friend is driving me insane. She's a friend of mine, too, but I can't stand her lately. We've gotten in a few heated debates lately (specifically regarding Playboy and 9/11) and each time, we have COMPLETELY contrasting opinions. I wouldn't mind if we were having an intelligent conversation about these things and were open to each other's opinions, but she has absolutely NO knowledge on either subject. I mean, none. And I'm no expert and I admit that, but I am a lot more educated than her on it and a lot more open minded. She's the type of person who knows next to nothing about what she's talking about but is also ADAMANT that she's right. It's starting to really get to me-- every little thing she does has been pissing me off lately.

Ugh.

Now I'm interested in which views you both took on each issue!

I won't get into that in too much detail on here because I don't want to piss anyone off but basically, she was saying that Playboy is the worst thing to ever happen and it's the nastiest porn ever and that Bush was behind 9/11, we've actually captured bin Laden and didn't tell anyone and we're the worst country ever for trying to establish democratic values in Afghanistan.

I'm not black or white on either issue but the fact that she's so extreme about things she knows so little about pisses me off....

Dani, we need a "like" button on the Ledge.
Well, that, and a "gas chamber inflict" button.
Sorry, I missed chatting. By the time I got JAVA installed on my laptop, and had to reboot several times, while I was working, y'all were gone from chat!

I was a total REM nerd between 1983 and 1987. What an incredible string of albums! I first saw them opening for the Police back when Murmur had just come out. To be honest, they didn't leave too much of an impression on me then. But I was interested enough to pick up the album (I heard "Radio Free Europe" constantly on the radio) and then I was pretty much on board until Document. I dunno... something changed once they got onto a major label and you could finally hear and understand Michael Stipe; I liked it better when he was just kind of mumbling in an echo chamber way down in the mix. And with their harder edge sound, they weren't ever again able to capture the quiet desperation of "So. Central Rain (I'm Sorry)" again. I found Green to be unlistenable. Ever since then I have paid no mind to REM. Pity.

I had a drama queen flat mate in college who would slam and lock his door to his room and B-L-A-R-E Everybody Hurts every single time he had something remotely unpleasant happen to him. I have not been able to stand REM ever since.

I've had a couple of cuckoo roommates myself. One much more so than the other - I don't even know where to start w/ that one. I'll just say that I strongly suspect bipolar disorder and leave it at that.

The other one slept w/ his ex-bf's ex to get back at ex-bf (even tho he swore up & down that wasn't the reason...please). But that was nothing compared to the antics of the bipolar one. He was really crazy. Bat****.

I can see why their later work would put older fans off of their music, considering the stark change in directing. Even comparing a song like We Walk (Definitely Murmur's answer to Shiny Happy people) with Shiny Happy People itself and despite the bright overtones they're a world apart. They lost their edge, but in doing so helped attract the more mainstream fans, I suppose. They're an interesting band to follow as their shades vary so greatly, much like Fleetwood Mac, though their only major staffing upheaval was in '97 when Bill Berry hit the bricks. Reveal would be the album that springs to mind when I think of unlistenable. Individually the songs work. But put them together and they coagulate into this drippy, honey suckle bucket of "shut the f*ck up". Puts me in mind of loafing in a baking hot car with one CD on repeat until the point that it blurs entirely. But other than that I do adore most of their albums, though I do have a soft spot for Out Of Time as it has my favourite "Country Feedback" on it. The CD version is good, but the live Perfect Square performance in Germany, with Peter Buck's amazing riffs, gets me every time. His riffs are absolutely euphoric.

The Family Guy scene where Peter wishes for theme music was made for people like him. Though, I suppose it would be rather epic to have music playing during important moments in your life. Though knowing my luck, my "walking down the street whilst feeling empowered" song would probably be Tootsie :/
