Hunting! This thread does not make me sad.

Good. It wasn't meant to make anyone feel bad.
My dad was a big hunter. He liked hunting with friends, and most especially his coon dogs. |

hunting doesn't make me sad either.
it keeps the deer populations down since they don't have any natural enemies. I shot and killed a raccoon once. It haunts me til this day, I could never kill another living thing again. I'm too much of a softy towards animals to be a hunter. but it is almost a necessity to keep the numbers reasonable.

Just curious, how old were you when you killed the raccoon?

I don't believe in hunting for sport or at all really but that's just me. I came from Ohio and noticed down here in Florida the raccoons are much less shy and friendlier and a bit bigger down here than up north. Some are as big as medium sized dogs down here with their longer legs. They'll come right up to you in the picnic area at South Lido Beach park in broad daylight. I've also seen them at night rummaging near the trash cans down at the Venice Pier parking lot. Not making a mess or anything, they'll just startle you sometimes if they're out.

^^ I don't really care for hunting either. I just make pest disappear.

Killing a racoon for dogs to rip apart seems completely senseless - but I'm a vegetarian and I abhore hunting for sport, so I guess I am biased. Not trying to be judgemental, it's just in my nature to nurture and protect animals of all kinds.
At least use it - eat it, make something with the fur. It's death should not be in vain or for entertainment. Though I don't imagine racoon meat would be very good. I once fed one that wandered onto my porch. I went out for a cigarette, and it was dark and the porch light was off. I lived, at the time, right off of Colfax Ave. in Denver, which is filled with bars and roach motels, and is a haven for hookers and drug dealers...so a racoon on my porch was sort of an oddity. Anyway, I thought it was a giant cat - until it came closer. When it saw me and I saw it, our eyes met and it ran about 6 feet away. So I went inside and got it an apple which it ate with both hands while I watched. I was hoping it might come back, but I never saw it again. |
