Friday: Night of 1,000 Stevies
Whose tambourine will reign supreme at the 20th annual Nicks-a-Thon?

By ELIZABETH BOUGEROL
Updated 11:45 AM EDT, Thu, May 13, 2010

It's one thing to buy someone's music and declare yourself a fan. It's quite another to worship a musician so wholly and completely, you organize a massive costumed tribute-fest to her and then keep it going for 20 straight years.
Welcome to Jackie Factory NYC’s Night of 1,000 Stevies, the biggest Stevie Nicks fan tribute event on the planet.

The name doesn't lie: If history serves, on Friday, the Highline Ballroom will be crawling with Stevies of every shape and form at NOTS 20: Sisters of the Moon, a night of waist-length blonde tresses, doves (white-winged, naturally), gauzy shawls, and easily the largest congregation of tambourines outside of captivity.

Fans will twirl and shiver to performances by the likes of burlesque mavens Amber Ray and Darlinda Just Darlinda, torch chanteur/performance artist Justin Bond, a klatch of all-Nicks/Fleetwood DJs and more. The night culminates in the always-epic Battle of 1,000 Stevies, when Stevies of every age, gender and stripe face off to determine who'll be crowned be the witchiest, twirliest and downright Stevie-est of all.

Details:
Night of 1,000 Stevies 20: Sisters of the Moon
Friday 5/14, 9PM
Highline Ballroom, 431 West 16th Street at 10th Avenue
(212) 414-5994
Tickets: $25 at the door; more info at www.highlineballroom.com

But the other major mention on my bucket list is to meet someone special. I never cared to meet a movie star or a famous politician. All I want is to meet, musical icon, Stevie Nicks. Her real name is Stephanie Lynn Nicks and she lives in Arizona. This incredible song writer and singer captured my soul with every song she’s ever sung and every lyric of hers I heard Her history of illness, addiction, recovery and renewal has also captivated me and I would like to tell her so.

Since I’ve been a journalist and writer of books for most of my adult life, I would know how to interview her, but that’s not what I want to do. I just want to talk with her, perhaps over cups of coffee or tea, learn from her and tell her how much she and her work matter to me, and so many others. Are either of these desires likely to occur? The money to go to the peaceful part of the Middle East is not available. The ability to contact Stevie Nicks to interest her in a conversation is even less likely. Why would she want to take time to speak with a stranger? Surely she’d worry if she was being stalked, since it happens so much to those who are public figures.

My gemini twin
"I have to do something else besides just rock and roll. Rock and roll is wonderful and I love it, but it's not everything. And it's important for me to do other things. It always has been, though. I can't live on just one. I'm a gemini." - Stevie on why she practiced ballet.

Well there you go. Turns out Stevie's birthday is 5 days before mine, on May 26th. (Mine's the 31st. Aaron's is the 27th and Mark's is the 22nd... guess we'll add Stevie to the list of honorees for our Gemini Potluck Party.)

And by the way, with that quote? I am Sold. Officially obsessed with Stevie Nicks. Scratch my entire birthday entry down there and just get me her biography, discography, whatever you can find. I'm diving in. There's something about her that I understand. Yes.

Here's our setlist for tonight, by the way:

Second Hand News
Little Lies
Dreams
Hold Me
Go Your Own Way
Don't Stop

Yes, I had to sacrifice all the other best Stevie songs to get Dreams, but um. I was GOING to get Dreams. And the rest - well, they're all just so This Blue Heavenly.

So one last time, the Fleetwood Mac Cover-Up is tonight at Lizard Lounge. Doors at 7, starts at 8. Please refer to the last few entries for all the details and links you could possibly need.

'Gypsy,' Fleetwood Mac
This 1982 song originally began as a Stevie Nicks solo effort about her early days with bandmate and former bed mate Lindsey Buckingham. But as her friend Robin Anderson became ill with leukemia, the line Nicks had included for her -- "I still see your bright eyes" -- became much more powerful, and Nicks saved the tune for Fleetwood Mac. Anderson died two days after giving birth to a baby boy.

When I lived in Boulder, CO. I made myself available for Stevie Nicks, if she would but come to a Boulder (or even Denver, I was willing to travel) poetry reading, see me, hear my poetry, and then take me home and feed me soup. Was that so much to dream for?

Then someone I know got me backstage at the Stevie Nicks concert at Red Rocks, CO where, while I didn’t meet her, I saw her and… well, there went that crush.

Bella Donna
June 3rd, 2010 | Author: superhatian
Bella Donna Hope – Hope Begnoche – ONAGA, KS, US
Received product in a timely manner and the case and CD looked good. The CD plays well. Thank You.

NICKS,STEVIE: No Description Available
No Track Information Available
Media Type: CD
Artist: NICKS,STEVIE
Title: BELLA DONNA
Street Release Date: 07/07/1987
Genre: ROCK/POP

While Stevie Nicks had the most recognizable voice in Fleetwood Mac, there was no guarantee she could craft the same kind of pop-rock magic without the help of the Mac’s guiding musical force, Lindsey Buckingham. As such, Bella Donna found her emerging surprisingly strongly as a solo talent. Part of the credit goes to Tom Petty, who gave her an excellent song in “Stop Dragging My Heart Around” (and duets with her on it). But other high points are Nicks’s own creations, including the urgently rocking “Edge of Seventeen” and the country-tinged ballad “Leather and Lace” (a duet with Don Henley). A few tunes here are forgettable, but overall Nicks started her solo career on a high note. –Peter Blackstock

Celebrity Junk Drawer

Jason Mecier's new show Celebrity Junk Drawer is one of the coolest things happening downtown these days.
It's up until July 10 at 5 Claude Lane. Amazing portraits of celebrities including Chris Rock, Rue McClanahan, Tori Spelling, Donald Trump and Stevie Nicks. The Stevie Nicks portrait is made of old 8 Tracks and used nicotine patch wrappers among other items.

BrightestYoungThings: PHOTOS: Pink Sock: Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves
I donned a lovely green number (to complement my fiery eyes) and did my very best Stevie Nicks impression, shrieking as low-pitched as possible, while DJ's Matt Bailer, RAD and a troupe of other maestros played their metal thingamajigs ...

"There’s a passage in Bill Drummond’s The 17 where he recalls traveling to Los Angeles in the mid 1980s, ostensibly to oversee the work of a hair metal band in his capacity as an A&R man for WEA. While trying to find the group in a labyrinthian studio complex, Drummond stumbled across a bloated Stevie Nicks, who was dancing eyes-closed to one of her own songs, lost to herself and the world. There are many styles covered on this, the first album by Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti since signing to 4AD, but that glassy Fleetwood Mac production, which flourished on Rumours, gloriously saturated their sound on Tusk, and continued to be an obsession for Lindsey Buckingham on later hits such as ‘Big Love’, is glazed all over Before Today."
