Lindsey deserve an extreme amount of credit for his contributions to 'Tusk,' though I do think it's unfair to say that those who favor the contributions of Stevie and Christine are "playing it safe," or only prefer softer, more commercial songs
I totally agree, and I can't really say that Lindsey is the master of Tusk, because there was more than one creative head at work. I think Tusk is a very uncompromising album, that explores different directions from a song to another. The listener can choose to follow one of the paths or enjoy the enthralling disharmony that comes from their blending.

I think There's a LOT of melody and GREAT again GREAT vocallayers in even the shortest, pointy songs that stand out for a VERY long time. I still love those songs after all these years. And good lord how many times did I play this record?

PS; isn't it a very great compliment on the subtle-ness and quality of a song if it takes a long time to grow on you?
Gaius and I have had this discussion before, and there are times when I think experimentalism (is that a word?!) benefits the song, and brings it to even higher levels of greatness.
And then there are times when I think hitting a box of tissues is done just to do something "different," and doesn't aid the song itself in any way.

Nearly all of Lindsey's 'Tusk' material belongs in the former category to me, but not 100% of it.

And yes, I do agree that it's a great compliment on a song when it contains enough elements to ingrain itself into your psyche, until such time as you realize you've come to absolutely love it.

Because 'Tusk' was an "expensive" double-album, and I didn't have a ton of money... and also because my Uncle was a Lindsey fan (who lost all interest in him by 1984, I'm sad to say... though I'm trying to re-ignite his interest, with things like "Murrow")... I actually had a vinyl copy of 'Law & Order' and a cassette of 'Go Insane' before I had 'Tusk.'
So I was already very familiar with Lindsey's offbeat solo songs, and loved them... but his 'Tusk' songs were just a little too raw and unfinished to my ears when I finally heard them.

Thankfully, my opinion changed favorably over the years... but I can still see, based on my initial reactions, why some people feel he has other offbeat/experimental music that's more appealing overall.

(By the way, if you haven't already, re-read my post that you were commenting on. I re-edited it a little bit after I posted it, to clarify the reason behind my statements. )

I do like Tusk! I just think a handfull of Lindsey's songs are annoying and I can't say that about Stevie (that's why I voted for Storms and not IKINW). I love WATL, the Ledge, Tusk and IKINW. The others I could pass on. I don't think this makes me any less of a fan.

I listen to a heap load of other artists, and, trust me, even something like "Two Kinds Of Love" will never be anywhere near as bad as some of Bonnie Tyler's Germany-only releases, or some of the sickeningly sweet latter-day pop by formerly incredible singers and/or songwriters (Elton John, Rod Stewart, Phil Collins, etc.)... for just two examples.

Even Stevie's so-called "crap" is better than a lot of what's out there, IMO.
And that's the thing. Stevie is NOT Bonnie Tyler, she's NOT Elton John, Rod Stewart, or Phil Collins; she's better than all of them. That's why when she releases garbage like Imperial Hotel, Two Kinds of Love, and Jane, I'm shocked at how terrible it can truly be.

You simply can't compare an artist like Stevie to artists like Bonnie Tyler or Rod Stewart because you can't compare Sable On Blonde or Trouble In Shangri-La to Total Eclipse or Do Ya Think I'm Sexy. I mean, C'MON.
