Long ago I used to listen to the aid and relief groups talking to each other via short wave radio. It was interesting listening. We’re there any ham operators in your group?

We really didn't have any type of communication like that. As far as I knew, we didn't. Our main contact was a local man who had connections in Medan, the capital of Sumatra. He came to the village two times a week and brought mail, fruit and things like that.

There likely were other communications available somewhere, I just wasn't in the loop on that. Our only communication to the "outside" were letters from home, at least as far as I was concerned.

The people there were so generous and kind. I feel a personal connection to them and the enormous grief that everyone overthere is suffering right now.

Because they had so little in the way of real material possessions, their families were the core of their universe. To think that entire families were wiped out is too much for many of them to bear, I am sure. Unimaginable grief.
Hi Heather! Great photos, and I think it's so great that you volunteered and helped them out as you did. I always feel such sadness and pain for the children there, or in any country where there is hardship for them...they are too young to understand why, and that just breaks my heart. I'm glad there are people like you there to make them smile and make life a little easier for them.

Heather - Great photos and great story!!

I hope to do something like that one day - I wanted to go into the PeaceCorps so much but it wasn't really a possibility now - but someday I want to do that or something like it

I would highly recommend that everyone do some volunteer work at one time or another! The best part is that you really feel like you are helping people have a better life in this kind of situation. I mean, they never had running water before our group came to town. They would go to the river and fill these large containers and then carry them back home on their head! It was like National Geographic right in front of my face!

In a third-world culture such as this, children take pleasure in such small ways. The kids there are like sponges - they watch everything that you do and are amazed by it. I befriended one little girl in the village and I remember when I accidentally dropped a penny on the ground. She picked it up for me and when I told her she could keep it, you would have thought that she won the lottery! It really was like seeing the world in a different way.

The recent mention of how a water buffalo (they called it a cow on the news) was on the airport runway and stopped traffic for the aid workers, was so typical of what occurs other there! Those "cows" generally are free range animals and wander all over creation!
