Were they about the size and shape of grains of rice? If so then they're tapeworm segments. Tapeworm is a parasite that is typically contracted through the ingestion of infected fleas or flea larvae (even just one flea can cause an infestation) and is a very common problem in cats and dogs. It actually takes a few months before you see segments either coming out of the anus or in the animal's stool and sometimes owners will find dried segments (which look like sesame seeds) in the pet's bed. Otherwise healthy animals can go for very long periods of time without showing any weight loss or other symptom of an infestation so unless this visit happened a few months ago, the likelihood that the worms came from the vet's office is pretty small.

No. I'm not a vet, but I work as a receptionist/assistant at a veterinary hospital and have worked at two other vet hospitals in the past.

Actually the last thing in the world I'd ever want to be is a veterinarian. I care too much about the animals to have to deal so closely with injury and disease and to have to deal with all too often uncaring owners (you'd be amazed at how many times I've heard things like "Well for that kind of money I may as well just take him home and shoot him"). I'd probably become either suicidal or homicidal depending on the situation.

OMG, Cait. It's like you're my soul mate. Let me share with you my patented quote I use any time Brit comes up on The Ledge:

I think the most horribly nasty thing I've ever dealt with occurred yesterday. A client's approximately 100 pound rottweiler passed away in the owner's backyard and he brought the body to the office to be sent away for cremation. I was the only employee in the building when he arrived.

It is August and I live in Northern California. Summers mean triple digit heat.
There's no telling how long that dog's carcass had been out there in the sun, and it had begun to decompose. The body was wrapped in plastic bio hazard bags but they were leaking some sort of fluid. In the process of helping him remove the dog from his car and carry it into the hospital (we don't have a stretcher so the client and I placed it on a sheet and carried it in that way) I got the fluid on my hands, my arms and my clothing. The dog was too heavy for myself and the owner to lift into the large freezer in back. So we left in the hallway - stinking up the entire building. I called my dad and had him bring me a change of clothes, but there was nothing I could do about the horrible smell in the building.
When the doctor returned from his lunch break, he and the technician rebagged the dog and put it in the freezer. Then he opened up all of the doors in the building to air it out... which helped dissipate the smell but attracted several flies.
