Default Without Stevie, what would you be?

I'm thinking about this often, that without Stevie and her music, I would't be who I am now...I write my OWN songs and poetry because I want and need to AND because of Stevie. She learned me, through her music, to write and to be that intrested in real poetry that I am today. I wrote my first serious song 2 years ago, I was 14, and it was called The Rock'n'Roll Woman. Guess who that's about? Stevie's music had such an affect of me that I felt like "OK, Hanna, if you're going to be like her and to perform on stage and be what you've always wanted to be, then you HAVE to write your own songs" and I hd and have so much in my life to write about and I also recognize myself so much in her songs that I thought, I have to write, you know, otherwise I would go there perform her songs in the future, and that's not right, 'cause I'm not her though I'm much like her in the way I'm feeling, you know...
And then, of course, she has helped me a lot...when I'm sad, I listen to her music or watch a dvd and I feel better...Stevie is the best medicin on this planet and everybody should be aware of that...that's true!

So what has Stevie done with your life?
Has her music changed you?
Has she helped you when you had difficult times?

i hear that~

i have been a fan since my aunt played me the buckingham nicks album back in 1973, when i was 5 & i have never looked back~ it's hard for me to think of what i would have been or who i would have looked up to w/out stevie, seeing as she has been in my life for so long~ i can't imagine my life w/out her in it~ everything i do has stevie in it somewhere, from dressing, listening to music & even almost naming my son, if he were a girl, he would have been a stevie~ i also decorate my house in ways i could see stevie doing it, or copying stuff i have seen her do in pics we have seen of her homes~ i just love her, always have, always will~

Life would just be much emptier without her. I was going to write "without her music" but there's more to Stevie's impact on my life than just her songs. She's a whole sensibility and has informed my writing, fashion tastes, and ideas about love and self-expression. She just makes me happy

And I've made some fabulous friends because of her

If I respond to this post, I will end up getting REALLY into it and probably embarrass myself. So I gotta think about this one for a while before I write anything.

That, and I would probably say well a lot less.

My life would be a lot less enlightened and inspiring. Yikes, cheesy! True though.

Music can change your life. And so many of her songs have had that effect on me.

Think twice as long and type half as much. Wise, wise girl.

I discovered Stevie and the Mac when I was 11... and at that point I was definitely kinda wandering, and trying to figure out just who I was. Discovering Stevie's music definitely helped focus and sharpen my identity. I'd always loved the ethereal and magical though: I grew up reading JRR Tolkien and John Bellairs novels, and was fascinated by witches and the supernatural. Stevie and Fleetwood Mac were definitely a natural progression for me. I don't know that I'd really be all that much different without their music, though the music plays a huge role in my life. Not just the music, but Stevie's sense of style has always been very parallel to my own, even my decorating style. Like others have said, the music and the Fleetwood Mac tale have absolutely enriched and in many ways enlightened my life... but I think I'd be on a very similar path regardless. Fleetwood Mac called to me because their emotive and transparent nature, and their love of the mystical. They definitely didn't craft any of those aspects of my personality... though they definitely did help refine my taste.

I think perhaps the biggest change would be my musical tastes in general. I grew up in a very musical household with music-loving hippie parents in a music-loving hippie city: Austin. Music was on 24-7 in my household, and we were always going to see live bands, festivals, etc. But until the Mac, I hadn't found any music *I* was really that nuts about. Perhaps even bigger than the Mac's music itself, Fleetwood Mac's music definitely opened up doors to me discovering other music. Thanks to Tusk and Lindsey's zany solo albums, I've gotten hugely into indie music in the last 10 years. Before Tusk and Go Insane, I could only appreciate music that was pretty, immediately accessible, and easily definable. Now musical experimentation (even when it fails) is much more important to me. It took me the longest time to get what Lindsey was chasing after Rumours... but I definitely understand now. I do tend to look for answers to life's questions through music, but I also do the same with literature. I had an Anne Rice novel recently answer a lifelong question I had about why I am the way I am.

So would I really be that different without Stevie? Probably not... but I'm damn sure glad I heard Gold Dust Woman and The Chain back to back on the radio in February of 1993!

Amen.

Seriously though, her music has had a serious effect on certain aspects of the way I am... I feel like I learned a lot from her style, especially growing up in the time of Britney and Christina... You dont have to embrace whats conventionally sexy, and the idea of being mysterious. Also, just relationships and toughing it out... Its totally corny, but I have learned a lot from her music... Sometimes its just nice to know someone else felt or feels the way you are feeling too.

On a different note: Theres certain songs that I can just turn on and remember a moment in my life, and I think thats significant... Fleetwood Mac's greatest hits album totally reminds me of my mom when I was growing up. She always had it on while cooking, cleaning, or getting ready. I turn it on and i'm right there with her again. And I know its cliche, but Silver Springs literally helped me survive a break up after five years. Its like Stevie made it, so can I...

Well, I'm sitting here listening to the "Goldfish and the Ladybug" compilation, trying to figure out my answer to this question.
I don't know that I really have an answer.

Her music just speaks to me. It's a silly answer, I know.
But this time last year (fall of my freshman year of college), I was going through some stuff and that's when I first starting getting into solo-Stevie stuff. (I had been a longtime fan of everything Fleetwood Mac, but never went crazy in depth into Stevie's solo work).
It was like, even when everything around me was falling apart/unstable, I could put in my earbuds, turn on Bella Donna (or whichever album I was particularly into at the time), and all was right with the world. I can find a way to relate almost all of her lyrics to some aspect of my life.

I'd probably be a lot less nutty without La Nicks in my life, but that I can handle!

Without Stevie I would still be the person who I am today. I love music way to much to miss out on anything. Having said that, having Stevie's music in my life since 1976, when I was 6 years old, has just enhanced my love for music, and songwriting. I get a kick out of her interviews, her mannerisms, and her laugh, but I would still be me as a person. I'm glad to have been able to enjoy her music all these years.
