Default Call for Independent Investigation of Abysmal Katrina Response

From Give Em Hell Harry:

http://giveemhellharry.com/page/petition/katrina

Last night, the Associated Press released tapes containing a shocking piece of information. According to the accompanying article, "In dramatic and sometimes agonizing terms, federal disaster officials warned President Bush and his homeland security chief before Hurricane Katrina struck that the storm could breach levees, risking lives in New Orleans' Superdome and overwhelm rescuers, according to confidential video footage of the briefings." [1]

This contradicts President Bush's now infamous claim that no one anticipated the breach of the levees. ("I don't think anybody anticipated the breach of the levees. They did anticipate a serious storm. But these levees got breached." [2]

These tapes once again demonstrate the need for an independent and thorough investigation into the government's failures surrounding Hurricane Katrina. For months, this Administration and their Republican counterparts in the Senate have consistently rejected calls for any outside investigation into the disaster.

Now we know why - this new video shows that they have systematically misled the American people to hide their own incompetence. Two Republican investigations into Katrina have been completed and two reports have been issued. It is now apparent that both have only scratched the surface. This Administration has a lot to answer for, and America must learn the truth.

We need an Independent Katrina Commission NOW. Help me take this message to George Bush and Bill Frist by signing our petition demanding an Independent Commission:

We must never allow the tragedy of Hurricane Katrina to be repeated. An independent investigation is the only way we can make sure we get to the bottom of what happened and make the changes needed to protect us in the future. Political concerns should never get in the way of seeking the truth.

Thank you,

Harry Reid

Well, considering Bush took the government funding put in place for the levee construction and repairs and redistributed it in his "war on terror" in Iraq knowing full well the potential of a natural disaster I'd say he was negligent and his office is responsible for gross incompetance. Dare I say that if the issue had presented itself in a less culturally diverse region and a more "White American" location then the funding would not have been cut.

Incidently the war in Iraq will have cost the American tax payers $251 billion by the end of this month.

So that's $251,000,000,000.00 of healthcare, education, transport, inner city redevelopment all cut or cancelled because of "W" playing cowboy in the middle east.

Or looking at it another way. Bob Geldof wanted to make poverty history by providing $50 billion a year for third world countries, to end children dying when they don't need to. That money would have funded 5 years worth of the entire planet's contribution to ending poverty.

Nice one George.

Clearly humanitarianism is not his priority. And you dared say it because it is so - contrary to Laura's assertion that such talk of racism was "disgusting". TrueMajority.com has the Oreo game which shows our government's budget and clearly domonstrates its priorities, whereby half of our tax dollars go to the Pentagon. Half. He really has been the worst president ever. A new fun fact, last year Americans savings rate was negative and the worst its been since the Great Depression. So Cheney tells us to save more. Its just absurd.
