Though pale imitation was an excessive criticism.

And the fact that the tour lasted so little time is a clue that the conflicts and nightmares that existed from the previous decade now weigh more than the interest in being a magical and extraordinary band that gives us its state of the art.
I think everyone brought their A game for Mirage. There is no padding IMHO except for Oh Diane

not sure I agree that it's "bad".... but I do agree it's a throwaway, filler song

As a pastiche of an earlier style that’s probably meant to be funny, it’s substantially better than “Blood on the Floor.”

There was a time that I liked it. But, I think I liked every single thing they did for a few moments. I could never get my head around this one in the context of the rest of the album. I sometimes don't skip it, but it's painful.
It does have that Everly Bros. thing, but I just think he could have given a much better song for them to work out.

Yes. Too bad Stevie was not given 4 songs for this album. Smile At You was brilliant and exactly what the album needed. However not a chance with Bella Donna still high on the charts they would mix things up. People before Bella Donna said Stevie was the lead singer of Fleetwood Mac but after Fleetwood Mac made that even more painful for the band. Its interesting that the video for Gypsy was filmed before Hold Me. Even if the record company or the band thought it should be the first single, Stevie's solo music was still on the chart so no way that was going to happen.
There is nothing I hate on Mirage. But its a bit safe. Smile At You is not safe and should have made the album. Its Mirage take is by far the best version of that song.

Agreed. But I don't see Mirage as safe. Hold Me sounds like nothing from that time. Gypsy is a safe hit (that I agree). But as an album, it was really an odd listen at first. Especially, with weird things like Eyes, Empire, Book, and of course. oh whoa HO Diane.

I think Lindsey calls it safe because the EQ's were set to normal production levels. and it wasn't recorded while he was laying naked in his bathroom shaving his privates rehearsing for the LIVE Not That Funny, screams and all.

Are those rehearsals included in any documentary video?

Maybe that's why he sounds like he's crying. He cut himself and needed the kleenex box.
