History will be kinder to Boys of Summer than to The Heat is On and justifiably so. The Heat is On is a pop throwaway, here today gone tomorrow. Boys of Summer lyrics try too hard to be smart but has some great atmosphere and guitar lines. And it had a memorable video.

History
Lines like, "I saw a dead head sticker on a Cadillac," always make me cringe.

You and jbrowns are both dead to me. That is all. Now make me a cocktail.

That line is so cool especially the context and irony of the line. Don't look back! I love Glenn Frey but some of his solo singles were just so cheezy. The heat is on was one of them. You belong to the city is another. But the one that makes me cringe is "The one that you love." It reminds me of being a child waiting in the dentist chair waiting to get my teeth drilled with some cheezy bad adult contemporary station plugged into the office. I lay there thinking....this is NOT relaxing me https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wb5OOAU4Duc I can take Smugglers Blues but not much else. But of course Glenn was a brilliant song writer and producer.

I'm not the biggest Henley fan in the world, but "Boys of Summer" is aces in my book. An atmospheric song with those wistful lyrics, perfectly juxtaposed with the music. "The Heat is On" is bleh.

I love Boys of Summer and The Heat is On! Henley's best solo effort IMO is Boys. And The Heat is On is totally mid-80's cheese but I like it nonetheless! It's catchy in the cheesiest of ways.

Boys of Summer is a great song. My favorite Glen song would be You Belong To The City.

Truth is stranger than fiction. You guys will not believe this. I was off from work today and went to the dentist. On the way home after the dentist I stopped at Smoothie King. In the parking lot as I enjoyed my smoothie in my car I checked the headlines on my phone. I came here to the ledge to see the updates on this forum and guess what song came on the radio? You got it.... "Boys of Summer" as I am reading about Boys of Summer. You cant make this stuff up. I swear it on my Stevie Wild Heart cape.
Boys of summer is one of the best songs of the 80's. In fact I would also agree that Building the Perfect Beast is also one of the best albums of the 80's. Lindsey played on that album which made it even better.

Don Henley had some great songs on his solo albums:
End of the Innocence, Boys of Summer, Last Worthless Evening. Glenn's solo career was embarrassing, and not even close to the level of his songs with the Eagles. I'm curious about the other bands they say will be added to the lineup for these shows. I saw the Eagles on The Long Run tour and they were unbelievably great. |

Other bands...
That is an interesting thing to consider. If this is supposed to be bands like FM/Eagles, what are the other California/70s rock groups and artists still out there? I'm sure Jackson Browne would be considered for a slot, but who else is left? Or will this be about finding groups that are more contemporary and similar in style? I could go for either. Though dubbing it "Classic East/West" makes me think it's an oldies kind of show.

Boston has resurfaced ,They are touring with Joan Jett, and Hall and Oats ( touring with with not a 70's group ,Tears for Fears ) I'm sure there will be other odd pairings like Stevie and the Pretenders to Fill arena and shed this summer and there are so many 70's groups with some original members out there STYX , Journey Cheap Trick , and I think there is a version of FOGHAT ( the only original member is the 2nd Drummer ) still out there
