Occasionally you will see shows that were filmed using actual FILM rescanned and make to sorta look ok on Wide ratio TV. But a show like Star Trek The next Generation which was filmed on film they went back several years ago and rescanned the physical film and upgraded to HD but stayed Square because it would have Chopped too much.

I guess that's the "problem"... they didn't treat it like a film. But didn't some shows get the widescreen treatment? I remember watching Seinfeld in the 90s on my 4:3 box TV... and nowadays the show is being shown in hidef and 16:9.
