if we are judging by songs - which should be less subjective - there were many angry, bitchy, and spiteful songs he wrote in late 70s and 80s. a good number of his more recent songs seem to be more contemplative, understanding, or accepting. but that can also be because as you said some of the different qualities that were always present became more dominant now, while they were mostly hidden behind the other traits that were more prominent before. but then again, i used to have a neighbor who's a well-respected and successful painter. her paintings were really dark and twisted, many probably exorcising leftover demons from traumas she suffered as a small child. but in person she was the nicest, sweetest, most kind and normal woman. i always thought she used her art to get rid of all the nasty things that were plaguing her, so she can live a normal life. so i guess the way person expresses themselves in their art does not normally have to reflect how they behave in everyday encounters.
