Default LB blows up the stage in Ottawa (literally!)

10 000 people, he was closing headliner of the day... played ISA and blew up the stage... then they restored power, he played GYOW... and started ISA again as a part of an encore - and blew up the stage again!

so apparently after that he left...

bunch of tweets throughout the whole show how amazing he was etc... and that apparently people were happy even at the end - that crowd loved stuff blowing up - twice!

Lindsfan, redtulip - help with pasting some tweets!!

Photos & Mayhem in Ottawa for Lindsey Buckingham + Stevie Nicks in Washington, DC

Weird sort of circumstances... Both Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks are performing tonight in Nation Capitals. Lindsey's in Ottawa which is the National Capital of Canada playing the Folk Festival and Stevie Nicks is performing tonight (and tomorrow) in the US Capital Washington, DC at the National Portrait Gallery for The Celebration of Science Dinner. Stevie spoke of her Walter Reed visits and performed Soldiers Angel.

The Ottawa Folk Festival

Twitter reports live from the Folk Festival are saying that the power cut out during Lindsey's performance of "I'm So Afraid" not once, but a couple times... Mic's weren't working... Amps blew out... he attempted the song again, but the power cut out again! THAT can't be good! Lindsey left the stage at one point, came back and said 'They've assured me this won't happen again. How about another song?" But it happened again and he left! Doesn't sound like he was able to finish his set. or the encores. "Go Your Own Way" was apparently played, possibly moved up in the set when So Afraid wasn't working out... He won't be happy!

The weather in the area hasn't been the greatest this evening, the rain has apparently held off, but maybe the humidity was too much... or the power was sufficient for what he was operating.

Bummer. I wonder if there will be refunds or a make up show. I wonder if the venue has had similar problems. But I suppose it depends on who their artists are, if it's a power issue. Not all sets require the same output.

Granted we're only hearing from a handful of the 10,000 people, but everyone seemed to be fine with the show. Amp blow-ups are exciting, I guess, so maybe that made up for shortened set?

Problems can be entertaining, particularly those that end with Lindsey performing push ups to pass the time, followed by Stevie helping him off the ground, stroking his hair and exclaiming, "I had no idea you could do that."

I wouldn't think they would do refunds as he was just one act at a festival and he did get through most of his set. Sounds like all that was missed was Trouble and Seeds We Sow, and I'm So Afraid was partial (twice).

Glad the crowd seemed to love him even with the technical difficulties!

Yeah, I didn't take that into account, that he was part of a line up.

no don't think so. he basically played the whole show sans encores. people left happy it seems with what they've heard. you pay for the whole day anyway and it was really cheap from what i remember (like maybe $25 or so)?

i went to a festival in Atlanta once where Cracker was the headliner... someone threw a plastic cup or something like that on the stage after the first song... and Lowery et al were gone after that. no refunds. they were the headliner / closing / biggest act (it was mid 90s).

ENTERTAINMENT MUSIC
Folk Fest: Big Love for solo act 0

BY DENIS ARMSTRONG ,OTTAWA SUN
FIRST POSTED: FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 07, 2012 11:05 PM EDT | UPDATED: FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 07, 2012 11:56 PM EDT

Lindsey Buckingham

If there ever was anyone who could hit all the right notes for the new Ottawa Folk Festival, Lindsey Buckingham would be at the top of the list.

Fleetwood Mac’s former lead guitarist, and arguably its most successful songwriter, played a solo acoustic show of Fleetwood Mac hits as well as his own songs, stripped down to the bare bones.

Now 62 but looking intense, Buckingham opened his show with Cast Away Dreams. Alas, despite the tune’s hypnotic rhythm, the sound was so loud and sharp, it hurt to listen. However, the problem was fixed by the time he played his second tune, a Fleetwood Mac cover called Bleed to Love Her.

He then described the show’s content, and his career thus far as the “big machine versus the little machine, that is, Fleetwood Mac and my solo career.”

In the late 1970s, Fleetwood Mac was one of the biggest-selling bands on the planet, and Buckingham was the author of their most popular hit songs Go Your Own Way, Never Going Back Again and Big Love.

Packing an impressive arsenal of exotic guitars, Buckingham played some of the most dazzling licks I’ve ever heard from a guitar, and his writing is forceful and unconventional. My only regret was having to leave early to meet an early deadline.

With the threat of rain and the euphoria of opening night dissipated, the mood around Hog’s Back Park ........

Talking

Just returned from the incredible Lindsey Buckingham concert. Where to begin. It was a hot day and then when I arrived at Hogs Back Park it had started to lightly rain off and on. I caught the bulk of Kathleen Edwards hour long show and while I enjoyed it for the most part her constant dropping of F- Bombs in her banter was clearly not impressing the crowd. Later on I heard people say that her show was a snooze fest.

I met these people in the crowd who were casual fans but enjoyed the show immensely. I recall them saying at one point they didn't know any of the songs thus far but were enjoying the show. The woman in this group recognized me from the whole Oprah campaign and because she asked I told stories about my adventures meeting Stevie, Lindsey, Mick, Melissa Etheridge, Jamie Lee Curtis etc and at one point they thought I was making it up. By the end they were impressed especially because I knew every song by heart.
Lindsey came on at 9:30 and played the same setlist he has been doing on this tour but during I'm So Afraid the power went out (During his solo at the end which he had only begun) Lindsey was pissed off big time. He said something about the stage crew stating storms in the area. It looked the show was over and then everything was back on and he finished the show. Then because the audience demanded he play I'm So Afraid again he did start to play it only this time he barely got through the chorus after the first verse (If I recall correctly ) and then the power went out again. He left looking really pissed off. Trouble was added to the Encore which I know he didn't play when I saw him in Ithaca NY in June.

Matt just reported on FB that LB did play his encores (or at least Trouble) but after that crowd wanted ISA again and that's when the final power cutting off happened. hope he posts here.

Oh, that puts it in perspective. Too bad it was ISA when things went wrong, since that's often the pinnacle to many people, but at least they got everything else.

Thumbs up

nice to see that LB's solo alone show works just as well in front of 10 000 people as in the small intimate venues -

Lindsey Buckingham Dazzles With Intense Acoustic Show

Posted on September 8, 2012 by Brittany Leona

The CUPE-SCFP main stage of Ottawa's Folk Festival was graced tonight with one of rock's greatest legends: Lindsey Buckingham. One may be tempted to assume that based on his musical career spanning nearly four decades, having released over a dozen albums, being a talented composer, singer and producer, that he would have a larger than life stage presence and the typical rocker attitude to go with it – one would be wrong about the last item mentioned.

From the moment he set foot on stage, Buckingham captivated the crowd, filling the balmy evening air with a thorough mix of works from his solo albums like Cast Away Dreams, Come and Go Insane and hits from Fleetwood Mac to the delight of many (myself included) like Big Love, Bleed to Love Her and Never Going Back Again. Buckingham is a rare find – an artist who, while performing, relives his melodies and lyrics as intensely as the day the material was originally written.

The age range of attendees varied from those who were around during the birth of Buckingham's musical career, to those who were not even a thought at the time. Possessing an ever humbling appreciation for his fans, he thanked the crowd sincerely after each performance and for being part of “this strange experiment” (in reference to his solo act of just himself and a guitar).

Though I was not able to take photographs, this performance has been happily seared into my memory, along with everyone else's who was in attendance I'm sure, as one of the most intense, emotional and fantastic shows seen in a very very long time. Definitely one for the books.
