Default Link to Great 1980 Interview w/ John

Gary Steel posted an interview he did with John McVie in 1980. Read it here:

http://www.witchdoctor.co.nz/index.p...ith-a-big-mac/

I really loved reading it. Nice to hear John briefly mention Tusk one year after it's release, when we have 30 years retrospect. Back then he said Mick made 70% of the decisions and he made 30% and the whole band had an equal say in touring.

We don't have a lot from John and I love having the chance to see this.

Michele

the gig lost whatever momentum it had when there was some kind of altercation between band members.

But worst of all was that the group appeared to let personal squabbles effect the performance: a gross display of unprofessionalism.

Would this be the oft-referenced show where Lindsey kicked Stevie?

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. It's also ironic that the band member singled out for poorest performance is the very same band member he interviewed.

Default NZ 1980 Tour Story

Hi there Mac Fans,

I just wanted to let you know about a story I wrote about Fleetwood Mac when they toured New Zealand in 1980.
It's been offline for many years now (!) but I have finally tapped out the piece again and put it on a website, www.witchdoctor.co.nz
I was only 20 when I wrote this, and full of impertinent questions because my head was, sadly, mired in the world of post-punk/new wave at the time. These days, I'd much rather listen to Fleetwood Mac than punk rock, but...
Anyway, a bit of history should anyone find it to be of any interest. It includes a review of the shambolic Wellington show, where Stevie was obviously drunk/out of it and harangued the audience until they started leaving in droves, and my interview with McVie.
Thanks, Gary Steel

Very interesting read. Thanks for posting. McVie was the only one you had interviewed?

Default 1980 Nz

My memory of the interview event was that quite a few members of the press were there, and each "given" a band member to talk to for a set period of time. Kind of like speed dating, but not that speedy! So I could see the other members in this enormous room being interviewed by others. I wasn't given the opportunity to choose my band member, or to interview any of the others. My personal choice would have been Peter Green, but... !

"...the musicianship, in particularly bassist John McVie’s case, was full of blunders..."

This is the first time I've heard him critiqued this way. He's usually said to be, along with Mick, consistent and reliable.
