Live versus Studio Versions of Lindsey Songs
I know that Lindsey has the reputation of being a "studio rat" and will work on a song until it is almost "overproduced." However, I prefer the live versions of many of his songs ("Monday Morning" from FM Live, "The Chain" from The Dance, "Never Going Back Again" from Live in Boston, "Murrow" from Soundstage, etc.) With the recent NPR and XM acoustic solos, perhaps he need to anguish in the studio as much as he has in the past.
I also wish he had performed "Trouble" live in the studio. I have listened to the New York concert version of "Trouble" probably 50 times and I am still not tired of it. I even prefer it over the "Soundstage" version. I find it amazing the way Lindsey will come up with different live versions of his own songs that sound better than the studio version on the original album/CD. "Save Me a Place" on this tour is so much better than the version on "Tusk" (my opinion anyway). The accompanying instruments by Bret, Neale and Taku give it a "Why" sound (the Christine McVie song that is my favorite of hers, especially the "Midnight Special" version that Lindsey and Stevie performed on). I also would love to hear a live studio version of "Gypsy" that Lindsey performed with Stevie and Waddy Wachtel a few years ago at Stevie's charity concert. Clearly, Lindsey is a man of many musical talents. |
