Judith Kay Newton launched her music career in the 1970s as songwriter and lead performer for a band called Silver Spur. Albums for RCA Records in 1975 and 1976 made no chart impact; an album for Capitol Records in 1977 also failed. Silver Spur broke up, but Capitol retained Newton as a session artist.
One of Newton’s best backup performances was on “
Ebony Eyes,” the hit single by Capitol label mate Bob Welch, a former member of Fleetwood Mac. Newton’s debut solo album in 1978 was a commercial disappointment, but she did score a hit with a song that wasn’t on it. (More on that later.)
