Is it laziness though? Or is it a genuine fear of being the last place people go to for information? The burden of requiring "official" confirmation can slow one down considerably, and no professional journalist wants to report things everyone already knows. However , I agree that if they're not going to wait for official sources before reporting things, there's nothing left to distinguish them from fan gossip sites and social media, and then what is their role really?
I'm reminded of so many news programs where presenters now spend a considerable amount of time reading tweets and other internet sources on air. Things that anyone could just do in their living room themselves. It's a weird world.
