I just think it's coz Stevie doesn't have a musical vocabulary… I was listening the other day to some of her demos and the Rock a Little songwriting tape of her with Mick and she says things like " maybe this part should go with that part, you know, the other part" and Mick tells her to play the parts she means for him because really, her referents are so vague you can't be sure what she's referring to. Or she says things like "it needs to be more airy" (Outside the Rain working tape) and on and on. Lindsey has a better grasp of what she means by stuff like that (or he did).
Chris says things like "keep it going til the B-flat" (Oh Daddy on the Rumours 35oth… oops I mean 35th edition)
So I think that Stevie just can't articulate what she wants in a song and it falls to her collaborators to interpret her somewhat vague comments, and Christine being a trained musician probably struggles to work with that.
