I remember reading somewhere, and sorry if this seems a bit apocryphal, a journalist saying that PG was probably the only guitarist who turned his guitar volume down for a solo.
A testament to the restraint and emotion that was essential to his playing.
As far as heavy metal and the similar genres go, I tend to equate them with posturing rather than genuine emotion in composition and performance.
I know that this a rather "wide brush" to portray an entire genre, but that is my admittedly biased impression (no doubt my prejudice was irrevocably cemented by "This is Spinal Tap").
