This is true, and perhaps he did forget it. But I think he was aware of it broadly, as in interviews he would reference (and not negatively) band politics, which he acknowledged were there and should be there. I always took this to mean he understood Stevie had more power. I think he just underestimated how much more, and misjudged how readily–and to what end–she was prepared to exercise it.
