Even if she still smoked, I don't think she would let herself smell like cigarettes out in public.
If she did, I would wager she was unexpectedly in the vicinity of someone who was smoking near her. I think she could have a multi-pack habit and still make sure that she never smelled of her own smoke. There's a stigma against that now that didn't exist in the old days.
