How so?

There WAS backlash against Lindsey in 1987.

Christine's departure didn't just happen in 1998. She quit touring after 1990 and made it clear she was done on the "Time" album. The point being that Christine was clearly in the process of leaving the industry altogether, not just the band, in 1998. She only did a solo album in 2004 because her nephew initiated the project, and even then she did almost nothing to promote it.

It depends entirely on how she handles it. If she does it in a way that is respectful to the band and the split is as amicable as possible, then she won't be crucified. If it becomes a mini-soap opera, then she'll probably get crucified.
